When I do a machine binding, I see the binding onto the front, then bring it around to the back. I use a glue stick and clips to hold it, placing the fabric just over the seam line from attaching the binding. Then I sew in the ditch on the front. You won’t have a random seam showing on the back.

    • @thevintagestitcher2022

I have tried that and I am never happy with the results. I am going to try the glue technique

    Thank you for the tutorial.
I was thinking of doing something similar with drying mats but not for their intended use. I need to tell you a story to explain.
The first time I was invited to my son and brand new bride’s home for supper, she put a drying mat in the middle of the table. Odd but ok. Next she takes her stoneware pot out of the oven and places it on the mat. I’m silently having a complete fit because the table had belonged to great-grandma. I didn’t know what to say. She left the room for a minute and I was lifting up that pot the second her back was turned. Turned out, the mat completely protected the table. Phew!!!
I’m thinking that my new daughter-in-law is one smart chick. I felt safe telling her how smart she was but then she gave me a confused look. Turns out, she didn’t know what the mat was for and thought it was a casserole hot mat.
This gave me the idea of making quilted casserole hot mats. I thought the mat would be too thick to sew through accurately and had planned to make a removable cover. I like your idea better.
P.S. My daughter-in-law really is a smart chick.

To end up symmetrical on both sides, lay your first strip right on the center of the mate. Start sewing the strips from there, to the right and then to the left.

I like your RUclips channel. Well informative cover the material really good I like that. And you’re fun to listen to. I noticed you make your comments to the ladies, but I’m not a lady I am a gentleman that absolutely enjoy sewing, and I love Wood Working, and I like Needles point and many other crafts. My wife doesn’t so and never has matter fact I do most of the cooking. yes I also do scroll saw and Wood turning I got me a nice big metal lathe and I do work on my vehicles and I do a lot of stuff. But I just wanted to let you know it’s not just ladies that watch your RUclips channel. And I understand it is mostly ladies that so but there’s a lot of us guys enjoy it. I get lost in it sometimes just get to sewing in time seems to pass so quick and you wonder where it goes. Thank you for your channel God be with you and bless you.

Note to self: When Arttie says she has a detailed video on binding - watch it! 🤣
I made a mat using random scraps. I’m brand new to quilting. Never made a quilt, but have made some potholders and 1 quilt block wall hanging.
I struggled with the binding, but learned some great lessons. I will probably use this one as a mat for my dogs dish.

I have very recently saw a quilt that the woman made in 40 minutes! What she did was take a ton of scraps, stitched together on a bias (45⁰ angle) snipped the corner off, and after about 30 or 40 2 1/2 inch strips, she matched up the ends, sewed down the edge, cut it in half, and so on until her piece looked almost like a sheet for a twin bed. She didn't finish it off, but it seems you are much better than myself so perhaps you could give it a go. I lovec your video

Best video ever! I have been sewing for 70 years but still enjoy learning something new. This is the best video for a new sewer to learn to sew and make something usable. I have always said, it does not have to be perfect. We learn as we practice. Thank you so much for this video. It is going to be perfect for my grandchildren who want to see results of something they have made themselves. Thank you!

Great tutorial today! So easy and great for using left jelly rolls. I save extra binding from quilts and sew them together for a scrapy binding. Thank you Artie, loved it!

Loved this video, just found it this morning. These would be really cute to make mats for pet food bowls. This may be an idea for all the family pets for Christmas 2024. My granddaughter asked me to make her little mats to go on the water dispenser of her refrig. I think I'll make a make and cut to the size of the template then bind. I can probably get 4 or more out of a mat. Thanks for sharing.
