Recreating a photo studio in Render Studio - a digital photoshoot!

  • Join me behind the scenes for another of my single-take rehearsals for demos that I am prepping for, test-driving new concepts, or generally practicing. Usually recorded late after all my normal work is done, you might enjoy some of the tips and tricks I hope to offer.
    If you run out of ideas for lighting and setting backgrounds with the built in or other sources of hdr files, then you can always model everything from scratch! Here I use Onshape CAD models for the softboxes/umbrellas and other studio bits and pieces, the put it all together in Render Studio

    Thanks Greg! Is there an advantage to modeling the lights/umbrellas etc over just creating an emissive disc the size of the diffusion panel? (or the mirror rectangle for that matter - that could also be an emissive fill panel). I haven't used rendering in Onshape yet, so I'm also curious if you can hide lightsources from view in the rendering but still have their lighting show up? This is a common feature in other renderers. In your example, you could have say the key light's light present, but not have the light fixture be visible. Also, can you turn off shadows for a particular light?

      So the effect will be pretty subtle if you can detect the difference at all, but that does depend on the appearances you choose for the model/product... I did this for an experiment rather than suggesting a best practice. For most practical usage, using the HDR file to provide light sources will be more than sufficient. In that case you can certainly exclude the HDR file itself from the rendering but still get the effect of the lighting. You can choose from an extensive range of scenes we provide, or upload your favorites. If you are familiar with NVIDIA IRay, then that's what we are using in Onshape as the rendering engine. So the techniques and capabilities will generally be all there when you know where to look. Volumetric effects and other good stuff is all possible.
