- Part 2 of 3, The secrets behind creating the fabled flex tail or “Squid Tail” are exposed for the first time on YT in this how-to series. Ben from Mystic Glassing demonstrates the Pro tips and techniques behind getting that translucent flexible tail on your next build!
These tails can be any shape or size and any degree of stiffness. Stiffness is determined by the number of glass layers and overall length of the tail.
This PUPE build includes custom glass-on quad fins, resin splash tint with cut laps, resin pin lines and, cork fish scale deck grip, and of course the deluxe Squid Tail!
Thanks for tuning in and watch out for part 2 where the “Deaf Ear, Squid Tail Deluxe” is completed!

So beautiful! I was wondering if the lease fin holds up as well as a plug? I love the look of it, but worry about side to side pull. Any issues with that?
Thanks for the good vibes brother! Glass-on fins are actually quite a lot stronger than fin plugs but there are pros and cons to both systems. Glass-ons are somewhat more difficult to travel with and you are stuck with the fins the board comes with but overall they are better attached to the board and look far nicer. On the other hand, plugs allow you to change your fins for a different size/style/shape set or remove your fins entirely for safer transport or storage...
Just re-read your comment and realised you were referring to the leash plug. Its pretty rare that they ever pull out, most never even leak. On big wave boards they use two though and on larger boards like 9' mals you will more often find a larger one. Ill be doing videos on leash plugs and alternatives soon so hang keep an eye out for those👍🏼
What does the skewed glass do? Super curious. Does it not cause twisting?
Glass in more directions means a stiffer laminate. In the case of a deck, it becomes slightly more dent resistant and overall the board is stronger because you have more fibers running in a more longditudinal direction. Its actually a better method than using the diagonal woven glass you see in the likes of Haydens "Future Flex" as that stuff is much thirstier than regular E or S glass. Its just trendy because you can see the threads running nose to tail. They dont add any strength, they just hold the fabric together until its laminated.
You do the pinline under the lam? So on the foam or what?
Never mind I saw the part 3. So you draw it with a marker or what? And do you tape off the pinline on top of filler resin to get a clean line or just on the lam coat?
Never mind again. Looks like ya you have a sanded filler bit under the pinline.
