  • Dylan Graves has proven himself a glass-half-full kind of guy. Over several installments of Graves’s “Weird Waves” series, we’ve seen the Puerto Rico-bred surfer greet everything from barely rideable Arctic glacier pulses to Pacific Northwest standing waves with the sort of enthusiasm typically reserved for head-high-and-pumping.
He froths on weird waves, it’s clear. But what about weird boards?
In the latest installment of Shed Sessions, Graves’s brio for the bizarre meets a formidable challenger in a 70s-era Stanley Pleskunas single-fin with inlay flex deck. Handpicked for Graves by Bird’s Surf Shed patriarch “Bird” Huffman, the board--which features a rolled bottom, wide-based, glassed-in fin pushed back toward the tail, and a soft-deck meant to allow the board to flex and twist in imaginative ways--is truly otherworldly, a seemingly perfect foil for surfer bent on locating the outermost limits of pure fun.

Oh my god I really REALLY loved this addition to the Shed sessions. Probably the next best step and top 3 shed session videos ever.
I always wanted to see more of an interaction and talk between Bird and the surfers. Like to me the Shed Sessions isn't purely another edit/video part to see good surfing.
I wanna see more of Bird talking and just hanging out, and who he is and how the pros talk and flesh out more of their unique personalities in how they just are in a regular ol surf shop. We have tons of surf edits of Taylor Knox, Albee layer, Dylan graves, etc... Give me more of this where they just hang out a bit.
And most of all this type of format is way better and more indepth, in my opinion. Instead of just watching pro's surf they way they do on a buncha boards bird gives out (like the guests are usually like "that board was weird for a wave or two, okay next one"), Dylan got a lot of time with ONE board and I loved hearing him talk about this one board in different types of waves and conditions.
He got more time to surf the board and figure out how he should surf it. That to me is way more entertaining and shines a bigger light on each unique shape and the shaper's philosophy behind why they shaped the board the way they did. We can also better understand why they're surfing the boards the way they do and how it feels under their feet and how it works in different types of waves, instead of the viewer just kinda saying general stuff to what they see on the edit with statements like "oh that board looks weird under his feet. Doesn't turn good as a good ol HP board."
I think future guest surfers should almost narrate from beginning to end how their experience was on the board from how odd it felt at first, what they had to do to adjust, and etc...
Also I think if you stick to this format you add way more longevity to this series if you only lend out one board at a time. And I, as a viewer, don't mind AT ALL if you bring back guests or even boards you had/lent out in the past. Give the surfers a longer chance to really adapt to the board you give them, Bird! And also each shed session episode could emphasize just the board. Like "Season 4, Episode 5 - 1967 Nectar Fish Ft. Dane Gudauskus"
Just some ideas. But I don't want to just see the boards ridden for a few waves, I want the pros to talk more about these crazy boards!
Thanks a ton, SURFER, Bird, and Dylan Graves! I fuckin love this series! Probably one of my top/favorite surf content ever. And Dylan was the fuckin man! I appreciated how articulate he was and how much thought he put into talking about the board. I'm sure the shaper would be happy a great surfer like him gave the board a fair shake at different breaks and with more time to surf it. And I love Dylan's contribution to the shed! I wish more guests could do that, as a fun segment to this episode. So fuckin stoked on this episode!

Bird, do you have any DCB shortboards? That would be the futuristic boards by David Charles Balcerzak, one of the east coast's best surfers in the 70s and 80s, and inarguably among the most experimental shapers anywhere. Dylan Graves would be very familiar with DCB, as he spent decades in Puerto Rico. In fact, the indicator rock at Maria's, the Rincon surf spot, is named after him.

Is funny to see that little kid riding Wishing Wells because Wilderness was too big for him. Now Dylan is his mid 30s and a pro "freeride" surfer.
