If I recall correctly, he only started letting his enemies live after Tien beat him in the World Martial Arts Tournament so they’d get stronger and be a funner fight later. The exception was against King Piccolo and minions but that because of what they did to Krillin and Master Roshi

@@OmniPoe2 That might have been Goku’s first lesson but he still killed a LOT of people after meeting 8 so I’d say the lesson hadn’t really internalized yet. Plus in many of his later cases of letting enemies go, he explicitly states it’s because he wants them to get stronger and give him a better fight later.
Yes, 16 was modeled after gero's son. He was a part of the red ribbon army, in the original he died in an unspecified way, but here you can hear goku in the background preparing a kamehameha, implying goku killed him and thats way gero hates him

And the super hero movie makes some of that canon to the anime.
Frankly it's just a straight improvement on the canon. TFS puts forward alot of that during the Android/Cell Sagas.

A little context about the Goku calling Gohan "teen Gohan": it's a reference to how every fighting game which includes this version of Gohan calls him "Gohan (Teen)", even though he's only eleven.

The backstory TFS added for 16, and Gero is definitely one of the best additions they made to the DragonBall story.
Even DragonBall Super Superhero basically made it cannon when 16 was never said to be related to Gero in Z

It was not a TFS addition, Toriyama had previously revealed this in supplementary material- TFS just decided to reference it
@@kaialone Technically it was an adition because in canon Gevo died by an enemy bullet while on duty while on DBZA he died by Goku's raid on RR army because that would be a better reason for Gero to hate Goku.

One of the many things the abridged did so much better is the death of Dr Gero's son. Because yes young Goku dismantled the red ribbon army sure, but killing Gero's kid would have explained everything on why he wanted to kill Goku. Then program all of his creations to do the same.
I always love how tfs created that video file with 16. It adds so much to his character and geros motivation behind wanting to kill goku, even if it was semi part of the story originally.

16 being geros son was made canon in the super hero movie. At least for the anime.
Gero never saw Freeza, he didn't even know what a super saiyan was.
I guess in the timeline that Cell came from, Trunks had never gone back, so Frieza had time to terrorise Earth a bit, hence why he was able to use Frieza and Cold's DNA to make Cell

Well, to be fair, Dende said he loved Gohan near the end of episode 30, so it's a callback. Easy to miss, though, cause 20+ episodes ago.
Also, that date is when Goku fought for the Red Ribbon Army back in OG Dragonball, who Dr. Gero used to work for. That's why its familiar to Bulma.
Dende gets confused feeling by having been saved by Gohan.
Dende went through a lot on Namek, so Super Kami Dende has nearly visible flaws.

Speaking of rising tension and such, might I suggest something for the remaining episodes after the movies and specials? You should totally watch episodes 57, 58, and 59 in one go. Think of it as a warm-up for episode 60, the three-parter plus epilogue. Which, at a minimum, I recommend doing parts 1-3 all at once; trust me, once you start, you don't want to stop if you can help it.

Of course he understands Goku! He is (or at least was) 10.78% Goku. Dunno if its ever established how much thay changes as Cell becomes perfect, if at all.

The thing about Dende crushing on Gohan started from the second episode of DBZ Kai Abridged, which technically came out before this. But watching all of Kai Abridged at once also works just fine. :P
To be fair, I don't think anyone expects that. TFS goes into amazing detail about why they made that scene in their creator commentary series, but the short version is: this version of events, which goes back to OG DragonBall, made more narrative sense to them. Personally, having heard their explanation, I wholeheartedly agree. On top of everything else, it actually makes you stop and sympathize with Dr. Gero, even if just for a moment. You can understand why his hatred for Goku runs so deep.
Yeah...16 does that.
Fun fact: Guru and all three forms of Cell were voiced by the same guy. So Cell answering that question about him coming back with "I wish!" is more of a subtle joke than people realize. :P

Im having trouble identifying what shape the stars are supposed to be in, it just sort of looks like a vaguely violin-shaped lump to me, but i can definitely notice the distinct shape.

Episode 60 is a 3 parter BTW. I'd recommend doing 3 next week and all of 60 after that. Then I think there's a wrap up episode or something after it I can't remember. Also your last video I posted about continuing the series and a good plan for how that would look. Up to you if you follow it or w.e. Just letting you know.
28:12 it was the date when Goku invaded the Red Ribbon's army main base and destroyed it. Back in Dragon Ball (before Dragon ball Z) and this is the whole catalyst as to why Giro developed the Androids and Cell. Well he was already creating cyborgs but after surviving Goku's invasion he recalibrated the new androids 18 and 17 and created Cell as a counter measure knowing how Goku grew in power quickly exponentially.
LittleKariboh has been a regular VA on DBZA too: He was the Narrator during season 1 and sometimes later. Also, he did a LEGENDARY job voicing Freeza.
Cell just rolling with Goku's stupidity is always funny.

So 2 things about episode 56. Gohan reads the disclaimer with thumping in the background while he gets increasingly uncomfortable. Also, May 12th is the day Trunks told Goku the androids would show up.
Fun Facts: Goku is 16 years older than Piccolo, and Piccolo is only 4 years older than Gohan.
In the OG Dragonball, Goku at 16 years old fought and killed Demon King Piccolo. King Piccolo as his moment spit out an egg which would soon later hatch and grow his son, Piccolo Jr (he is never again referred to as Jr). 3 Years later Goku fights and beats Piccolo at the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. At the end of the tournament is when Goku agrees to marry Chi-Ch. Roughly a year later Gohan is born.

Much like how in an earlier episode his jokes about "half and half" about baby Trunks, and when Krilin brought 16 over for repairs, Dr. Briefs said "I taught Bulma everything there is to know, except the dangers of miscegination [an older word describing mixed race relationships]"
Like I've said before, Dr. Briefs is a racist monster.

A little trivia nobody ask for: in the Latin Spanish dub they ended up changing Chi-Chi's name to "Milk" because in spanish chichi is an urban way of saying boobs

So some fun facts that you might be interested in; Chi Chi talking about bleached hair is a reference to the Japanese perception of having bleached hair being associated with delinquency. That might not be the case as much anymore, but it certainly used to be. Mr. Satan is basically based off of American pro wrestlers, and his name is due to the fun old Asiatic slur of America being 'The Great Devil'
I think you would really like reacting to Dragon Ball Super after you finish Abridged. Sure, DBZA isn't canon, but it really does give you the gist of things, and Super is a really fun show with great slice of life episodes and really solid humor. Food for thought!

A friend once told me that somebody once approached TFS, and asked if the muffin button came to be because Dr. Briefs reverse-engineered Goku's original space pod. Since those pods are intergalactic space vehicles, they would obviously need some means of feeding their passengers. And being so cramped, it would make sense that they can materialize food to achieve that. Hence the muffin button, which Dr. Briefs didn't even realize he'd inadvertently installed by building the ship based on the original. And according to the story as I was told it, TFS said that they wished they had thought of that, but in reality it was just a completely random gag with no profound meaning whatsoever.

I think penguins was the wrong answer for 16 simply because they aren't a flying bird. I think to 16 birds have to fly. That's their number one defining trait and since penguins (and assumedly ostriches, emus, cassowary, and kiwis) can't fly, theyre not birds to him.
I humbly request that you make the Broly movie available to everyone. It’s one of TFS’s peak works and deserves it.

While the Broly movie takes place in the lead up to the Cell Games, it contains a very big hint to a very big reveal from the finale. Personally, I'd recommend watching it afterwards.
In the meantime, you can buy time by watching the Cell Games shorts. They're a bunch of crossover fights against Cell before the finale, and I believe Cell references them later
I feel like that's what makes the order of watching things so confusing, and is probably why she sometimes receives mixed suggestions. Because on one hand, you have the intended/canonical order of events. But on the other hand, you have jokes and references that are sometimes to future events, because DBZA's writing expects the viewer to have already seen the original show. Because of that, it's sometimes hard to know for sure when specials and movies should be watched, since those recommendations can vary depending on the viewer's prior knowledge.

There is a lot in dragon ball z and the abridged that is different or if not vastly different. Anything and everything Mr Satan says is literally almost word for word verbatim, if not barely changed at all. Even how he sounds is similar. In the actual show he pretty much acts exactly like and sounds exactly like what this version makes him sound like.
I would definitely recommend watching the "Cell vs." videos and the DBZA Broly movie before Episode 57.

Just in case there was any confusion (which I doubt, but just in case), King Furry's name wasn't some lazy furry joke for being an anthropomorphic dog. That is his actual name. I just feel like without prior knowledge of Dragon Ball, that's something that some people could wind up assuming nowadays.
It's a name added in the English dub, as he's remains nameless in Japanese.

its often been said that Raditz should have been used so much more then just a one off throw away villain even more so as over the years Akira Toriyama changed/revealed more details about Saiyans that moved Super Saiyan into more of a uncommon genetic mutation then something every single saiyan could do if they were strong enough, the whole S - Cells thing combined with the reveal in a flashback in the Dragonball Super manga that Goku's insane power potential might not be natural due to Bardock unknowingly wished for his "Sons to prosper" granted it was never show if this was accepted which it might not have been due to alien dragon sensing he merely speaking from the heart and did not understand it had the power to grant any wish he desired etc. There as been a few "What Ifs" in some of the games that explored what might have happened if Raditz joined forces with his younger brother.

I think they were a bit misguided. a small inconsistency about them not knowing where new namek was vs missing callbacks to the film. none of the movies are canon even in DBZA. TFS fits them in as best they could but they all suffer from plot holes that cannot be resolved. it's best to not think about them and just watch in the order TFS intended.

To be fair, the Red Ribbon army was a pretty cruel organization trying to take over the world, they weren't good guys and goku getting rid of them was a good thing.
