A piece of media not being what you expected it to be is such a weird reason to criticize something. There's plenty of valid criticisms here, but this ain't one of them. Not everything has to stand for something, let alone the same thing. Variation is a good thing. Sometimes, a story is just that, a story.
@Blitzbrie it's a very important discussion for us to have either way. The reason people are so shocked by it is how many well known names are part of it and how teenagery the script was along with the maturity of the sexual material without the mental aspect to match. Meaning there was little reason for the multitude of them let alone the explicit nature of them to be shown. When the show is advertised as something that does far from deliver the content boils down to pretty basic glamourized porn. And the nature of having a female director at the helm but tossed aside in favor of this supposed exploitation of a woman in a vulnerable position is disappointing. With the amount of pain on this planet involving this industry, not just adults but also children who are taken advantage of, I'm glad people are sharing their personal taste since we are the ones watching. So we can't share our opinion of desiring an elevated more true to life version of what has been happening in Hollywood for a very long time. It's important for us to take a close look at what really goes on, that's how real change happens. Instead it was deeply underwhelming and actually harmful to those who are in these vulnerable positions. We need to wake up and have media that reflects our world. The human traffic trade is a billion dollar industry and that includes kids. If we continue to support shows and media that promotes vulnerable people as the abuser we will doom current and future generations to a very sad existence. There is a place for racey sex scenes and nudity but when the intellectual content is not there to back it up it all it hang on is the sex stuff and unfortunately falls flat. It's very important we discuss what content we support and which fails us when it's dealing with delicate themes such as these. You don't just run through it like a bull in a China shop and expect to be smooth sailing. I hope that helps give you some insight as to why people feel strongly about this. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤️
I’m surprised yo be saying this but… I was more underwhelmed with the Idol in the fact that it was just boring. Like I expected so much more (in terms of the plot 😭😭🥴) I expected the raunchy scenes and Mr Levinson didn’t disappoint 😅 But I was just expected more of an interesting plot and just found myself bored more than anything. At least Euphoria was actually somewhat interesting even tho it’s a mess 💀💀😭🥴
I am sorry but doing various emotions are definitely not foreshadowing of sociopathic behaviour. She was an actor before being a singer ffs. This just lazy writing
A few days ago i saw some behind the scenes images of the original cut of the series and MY GOD we were robbed so bad. Lily was looking like late 90s britney spears, it was so cute
i really don’t think she made up the abuse, i think she replaced the brush with something new because she doesn’t need it to motivate her anymore. her trauma was coded into the show the entire time and her team even confirmed what happened because they saw it firsthand
Exactly cause everyone thinks she lied when in fact she didn’t need the brush of old memories of her mom… she got a new brush for tedros to hit her with 😂
I personally feel that the story would have made a LOT more sense if the final twist was dealt with, with a little more thought. It would have been a far more compelling narrative if the story's twist had been that Jocelyn was taking revenge on everyone in her surrounding for exploiting her; her mother for being abusive, Dyanne for backstabbing her, her management for exploiting her, Rob for cheating on her, and finally, Tedros for...everything he tried to pull. Technically, I think that was what they wanted to pull off... but the reveal that she lied about her mother's abuse, just ended up throwing the entire story off-balance and the motive...almost non-existent. Anyway, bottomline is, Sam Levinson had a lot of potential as a director, but now he REALLY needs to get his feet back on the ground and stop getting cocky just because Euphoria Season 1 and the extra episodes gained mass acclaim. Hubris won't get him anywhere.
For me, the ending would be better if Jocelyn became manipulative through the series. Like making it seem like the industry turns you into a bad person and the abused has to become the abuser to survive in this kind of job. I feel like that would be a stronger message.
I think Sam’s problem is that too many people blew smoke up his butt with euphoria season one. And now he thinks he’s a great auteur, when he’s just a guy who wrote about his drug use in high school. The idol could have been good if it was done by a more sophisticated hand, including the “twist”.
It's very clear that they didn't want to first of all make a man the villain of the show, but also clearly couldn't think of a good way how to achieve any type of plot twist since Tedros was from the very start revealed as f*cked up to say the least. They just went about this story all wrong and I'm not even shocked it ended up as trashy as it did.
Lily played her role amazingly, but the weeknd's acting was just to convincing especially since he was "one of the minds behind the show" like please explain to me HOW you thought to incorporate those specific disturbing scenes that didn't need to be there. The end of the show also would have been really good if while Jocelyn was on stage she came out about everything that she had endured and now her and her friends are safe etc. I think that would have just made more sense and would have at least tied into the original story the show was supposed to follow, which would have talked about Jocelyns experience as a child star and how her mom played a role in that. The ending just felt like they were setting it up for a season two, but what is it going to be about? Basically a repeat of season one with Jocelyns team trying to chase tedros away but with Jocelyn "in control" this time. I don't know I just want the original version.
So the show that was supposed to show the difficult lives of female artists in the music industry and their experiences, hardships and exploitations somehow turned into a “haha every crazy and f*caked up thing happened to the female artist was because she wanted to climb the fame ladder” and “she did it to herself” ? I’m soooo confused
The music though! One thing I realized at the end of the this show was : Sure it was disappointing and boring, but.. Yo the MUSIC? Was really good! Like you said, "I'm a freak yeah" was fun because it served its purpose, they made it "generic pop" on purpose, to then give Jocelyn songs with more guts like the one she sings " Daddy, Doll house, Messed up"? That was good. "One of your girls" ? Amazing! The songs Izaak and Chloe and Xander sing? Amazing too!
The ending of The Idol was SUPER out of place to me. The Weeknd’s character tedros started off extremely confident, manipulative, and resilient. By the end of it, he seemed like joss was the one beating him with that hairbrush instead LMAO.. Joss’ nipples got more screen time than any meaningful plot events the audience needed to put the pieces of this show together. I would've loved to see an ending where joselyn still takes over the cult and kicks out tedros, he could've set out to get his return on dyanne like he said in the beginning- sabotaging joss and having her label pull through with dyanne doing World Class Sinner as her first single. Leaving the audience rooting for one antagonist or the other.
This past week there have been photos of the original The Idol set directed by Amy Seimetz leaked on Twitter and the set actually looked good and the props and everything and it looked more pleasing to see in comparison to whatever the heck Sam was making. Also I still want to know who is the anonymous cast member who talked about the toxic work enviornment in the rolling stone article.
I think a lot of the unnecessary scenes are events that actually occurred in the weekend’s life. They are very real and necessary to him but I wish he had had better council. People always say write what you know but I think he did this without realizing that he spoon fed way too much of his experiences and didn’t develop why people would care or resonate with the people or story. Sometimes things that mold or are important moments in out lives are not good stories on their own. Idk but I think with time the weekend will be able to move on from this and I bet the backlash will evoke so mad music!
I wanna see the episode they completely cut after the 3rd episode they cut it down to 5 episodes instead of 6! Because the 5th episode was like two episodes mashed into one and we definitely missed some plot points that was probably important!
Oh baby. It looks like HBO will have to release Amy’s original if they want to make their return on the project. This version of the series which Abel asked for because it was more aligned with “his vision,” just isn’t enjoyable to watch. It came across as Andrew Tate coded. Yikes. Yikes. YIKES.
In my opinion everyone’s acting except The Weeknd was good and the writing was bad lmao the potential was really there and Sam and The Weeknd ruined it
I watched The Idol just because I’m a BLACKPINK fan and I wanted to see Jennie, but Lily Rose Depp really shined as an actress here! Made me want to keep an eye out for her in whatever new project she’d be in-hopefully a much better project than this. After watching this show, I can’t express how disgusted I am with Abel aka the Weekend’s lyrics. It’s to the point that I deleted any music I had of him ( I only had like 3 songs lol but still) just because I didn’t wanna hear his lyrics. The fact that he defends this project tooth and nail makes it all the more icky for me. Overall the only good thing from this show aside from Lily was the cinematography-very beautiful shots. Such wasted potential.
The writing was bad. But there are some great breakdowns of the show that go further than "i hated how misogynistic it was" or " the victim is the real villian". If we are just not allowed to make fictional shows that can be about dark subject matter then movies like Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction, both classics, would never be made. You young folks meed to quit perpetually clutching your pearls.
Wait I didn’t think she lied about her mothers abuse. I think she just brought another brush? Wouldn’t he have noticed if it was new before? Maybe not if he was high. But Xander said her mother hit her … I’m confused y’all
I think a bunch of time was wasted where they could have been explaining some of the plot gaps. I also think they worried about setting up a season 2 leaving for a second season to explain a lot.
I still don't get "the satire", was that just an excuse to be yuck? I was hoping maybe it would be like showgirls where it's so bad it's good again 😆 how naive of me.
It’s funny I thought the same thing too about The Weeknd. I’ve need a fan of his for years and always thought he was 6 foot because his music gives off that energy…found out a week ago he’s 5’8 and I was like I could of gone my entire life not knowing that 😂😂😂
This is gonna sound mad & slightly problematic but despite the poor execution of this show…I kinda want a season 2👀. I feel like with Sam what’s his face gone & a complete revamp of the script the show would EAT because there’s so many unanswered questions right now. Where is Laia (or is it Lèah…)? How does her getting back with Tedros affect her relationship with her team? Does Xander’s music career take off? Like idk maybe I’m twisted & need therapy but I feel like The Idol actually had/has so much potential but the execution was terrible because not only is it just hyper sexualised but like you said, the show doesn’t really pick up until episode 4 and it’s a limited series soo…yeah🤷🏾♀️
yep, I can't hear The Weeknd now, I just feel uncomfortable. And I'm not watching Euphoria season 3, F Sam Levinson. I really appreciate your sacrifice for watching the show for us❤still, if you ever feel like quitting a show or something bc it's too much, please do. Take care of yourself
I think I definitely perceived this show differently to most people it had dark and unsettling scenes (with the abuse and control) but I also saw the humorous nature of this show it almost confuses your brain though like most unsettling movies or scenes in film where you laugh and feel uncomfortable at the same time, maybe that was the point of the character?? to give you a false sense of safety where you felt as though you could trust Tedros or at least laugh at his ridiculous nature (because he ain't the macho man he's making out to be', the scenes where Jocelyn kinda puts her hand on his shoulder to get him to chill kinda supports this view for me) but then when you see the abuse again, you go back to hating him thinking dang he's messed up.Maybe I'm the only way that see's that but believe or not I didn't think it was a bad watch. its funny if anything, and I'm not taking the series to seriously. people always try to attach too much meaning sometimes when sometimes its just a trash show that you watch for entertainment, a bit like if you've seen 'Skins' or 'shameless uk' (I CAN'T SPEAK FOR THE US) as I have never seen it. Also if you have ever seen anuvahood the character 'tyrone' he kinda giving those vibes. I know I've had personal experiences with people who give me tedros vibes like they aren't the nicest people, you laugh with them at times but really you don't feel safe around that person as they are so unpredictable and could smack you the next minute with no reason so it does kinda express the abusive unsettling nature of tedros to me (maybe its just me but.. yeah). if you have had mental health struggles surrounding abuse or have been mentally, physically or verbally/emotionally abused you may get the message, but I don't suppose everyone will. (I've been in abusive relationships so I know what i'm talking about) lmao.
What's interesting is that for me I can move on from the toxic nature of the show, if it had anything decent or smart to say but no, it was boring as hell with soft core p*** scenes... also The Weeknds acting was laughable at best, didn't care for his character at all.
We gotta convince Amy to leak her version we don’t care!!!! This idol was trash!!!! How can a man speak on women in the business when he keep’s sexualizing them? No thanks Sam… but we need Amy’s version frfr!
I’m so glad I didn’t bother watch the rest and very happy this awful, cringe too much movie is over. However, I’m mad cause the original creator before Sam had a version but they cut her off and change the script. The idol could have excellent potential if the original creator was still there instead of Sam and Abel.
Felt like the stars couldn't commit to the show so they ended it at a wekend concert .fast forward through things. They set up best Friend up to be jealous. I think they would have played it out like Selena where the best Friend kills her. Or like Amy winehouse where she dies for self indulging. The plot they made it was like Lilly had a movie coming up and Abel had to get back to being a pop star.
I only watched two episodes but the music for the show does it justice cause world class sinner, fill the void, one of the girls, double fantasy, and popular is something good
This show wasn’t as bad as I expected, nor was The Weeknd’s acting (though, it DEFINITELY had it’s 🧀🌽🧀🌽🧀 moments…). I liken it to the OPPOSITE of how when people RAVE about a movie so much…yet when YOU get to see it, you’re like “ummm, 😒😒😒 it was AIGHT???”.
The end product certainly was, shame Sam Levinson was atttached in the first place, cuz it sounds like everything before his involvement was way better and less skeevy
Jocelyn turning out to be the real villain of the show reminds of that Taylor Swift song, "Mastermind" where she says: What if I told you none of it was accidental And the first night you saw me nothing was gonna stop me I laid down the groundwork and then just like clockwork The dominoes cascaded in a line What if I told you I'm a mastermind And now you're mine It was all by design Cause I'm a mastermind
But the lyrics of Taylor Swift's song are actually good where as Jocelyn doesn't even have a power song. All I remember is 'I'm just a freak yeaaah' and her character being in power makes no sense.
I'm confused by what you mean when you say that the things they cut out was allegedly a lot worse. I thought everything they cut was when Amy Seimetz was the producer, and then she left. Abel, according to a source, said her work leaned too heavily into the female perspective. Is that what you're suggesting could have been worse? Or is it just other parts of the Sam Levinson/Weeknd vision that got cut that you're saying was worse?
The fact that the female abuse victim is being revealed as the true villain all along, while her male abuser is being revealed as the victim in a show that was SUPPOSED to be about the exploitation and mistreatment of women in the music industry and Hollywood in general should tell you a lot about the two men who wrote and created this show. Tbh i still thought he was the abuser but then like idk yeah like even in my way of thinking still bad still bad

@@Blitzbrieits because it doesn't make any sense
I’m surprised yo be saying this but… I was more underwhelmed with the Idol in the fact that it was just boring. Like I expected so much more (in terms of the plot 😭😭🥴) I expected the raunchy scenes and Mr Levinson didn’t disappoint 😅 But I was just expected more of an interesting plot and just found myself bored more than anything. At least Euphoria was actually somewhat interesting even tho it’s a mess 💀💀😭🥴
What must be going through Sam Levinson’s head? Not much, this could have been written by a teenage boy.
Exactly cause everyone thinks she lied when in fact she didn’t need the brush of old memories of her mom… she got a new brush for tedros to hit her with 😂
Omg ... true.
Spot on. The most balanced take here. Dude needs to work with a decent writer or a decent team of writers for future projects.
The way this show took 20 years off my life 😭
For me, the ending would be better if Jocelyn became manipulative through the series.
Both of them are mentally ill people with traumas. Not real « villains »like in the marvels. Just complex characters like in real life .
I have not seen a single episode and I am proud of that
Lily played her role amazingly, but the weeknd's acting was just to convincing especially since he was "one of the minds behind the show" like please explain to me HOW you thought to incorporate those specific disturbing scenes that didn't need to be there.
Show it's about Jocelyn... not every female artist.
Amazing too!
ngl but "baby it's hard to see..." has been stuck in my head for weeks
The ending of The Idol was SUPER out of place to me. The Weeknd’s character tedros started off extremely confident, manipulative, and resilient. By the end of it, he seemed like joss was the one beating him with that hairbrush instead LMAO..
Joss’ nipples got more screen time than any meaningful plot events the audience needed to put the pieces of this show together.
I would've loved to see an ending where joselyn still takes over the cult and kicks
out tedros, he could've set out to get his return on dyanne like he said in the beginning-
sabotaging joss and having her label pull through with dyanne doing World Class Sinner
as her first single.
I love your videos so much!
Wattapad: The Clipshow
The way the flip the script is giving maneater-👀👀👀 like how?
omg the amount of time during the day I would start singing 'i'm just a freak yeah...' HAHAHA. Glad I wasn't the only one
I started to like the song too!! 💀 It feels good to know I’m not alone in this. Also your little dance to it is my new favorite thing. 💕
I wanna see the episode they completely cut after the 3rd episode they cut it down to 5 episodes instead of 6! Because the 5th episode was like two episodes mashed into one and we definitely missed some plot points that was probably important!
the idol did not make sense
Oh baby. It looks like HBO will have to release Amy’s original if they want to make their return on the project. This version of the series which Abel asked for because it was more aligned with “his vision,” just isn’t enjoyable to watch. It came across as Andrew Tate coded. Yikes. Yikes. YIKES.
Able comes across as a big creepy narcissist
It was Abel's presence that always ruined the scenes of the show yet ironically wanted more screen time💀
to me that was one of thr worst show i've ever seen still don't get why Lily-rose got herself into this mess and defending it
The writing was bad.
But Xander said her mother hit her … I’m confused y’all
I really hated this show
Save your Tears(Remix) hits different
I think a bunch of time was wasted where they could have been explaining some of the plot gaps. I also think they worried about setting up a season 2 leaving for a second season to explain a lot.
I still don't get "the satire", was that just an excuse to be yuck? I was hoping maybe it would be like showgirls where it's so bad it's good again 😆 how naive of me.
First off most of the Jocelyn songs are lit. “Fill the void” “world class sinnner” and “Dollhouse” 😍🥰
All I can say is: YIKES
the idol is my guilty pleasure i dont know why i like this show because its god awful but i do like watching it😭
11:03 you definitely gave this show way more credit than it deserves lmaooo
Loving this editing!!!
It’s funny I thought the same thing too about The Weeknd. I’ve need a fan of his for years and always thought he was 6 foot because his music gives off that energy…found out a week ago he’s 5’8 and I was like I could of gone my entire life not knowing that 😂😂😂
I'm so glad I didn't watch this
“The weekend was giving me 6 foot energy with his music” lmao so truuuue
“The Weeknd was giving me 6 foot energy with his music” why is that so funny? 😂
Like idk maybe I’m twisted & need therapy but I feel like The Idol actually had/has so much potential but the execution was terrible because not only is it just hyper sexualised but like you said, the show doesn’t really pick up until episode 4 and it’s a limited series soo…yeah🤷🏾♀️
agree, they literally gave us no info the whole season. we need some answers.
yep, I can't hear The Weeknd now, I just feel uncomfortable. And I'm not watching Euphoria season 3, F Sam Levinson.
I really appreciate your sacrifice for watching the show for us❤still, if you ever feel like quitting a show or something bc it's too much, please do. Take care of yourself
You need a vlog channel fr fr bro I've been watching you since the college days and i'm so happy to see you succeed and grow. Much loveee💜💟💜
Tedros thought he could pimp a star but in the end joss was pimp lord. Now tedros serves the idol just like the managers, fans, and "the family".
been waiting for your take on this 🧃
🎶"Maybe it's hard to see
When you're lookin' at me"🎶
You really are serving with this look bestie ❤️🫶🏾
9:12 bby tell ur editor it’s ok to say heinous!
Make a Xo kitty review
We gotta convince Amy to leak her version we don’t care!!!! This idol was trash!!!! How can a man speak on women in the business when he keep’s sexualizing them? No thanks Sam… but we need Amy’s version frfr!
Alexa Demie was in the club scene with Dyanne and Josslyn when tedros first met josslyn
Ofc he's 5'8 ofc
He is 5'7
I liked the show it was crazy but I like it and the music I was excited for season 2
Girl what are you saying? The last episode comes out tomorrow😂
The idol shines a light on Diddy and Cassie relationship
5:50 i swear when he's on stage he looks 6 feet tall
(please tell me someone gets it)
If I said there was a 2 hour movie edit of the show where there was no femme fatale storyline (and way less nudity/sex scenes) would y’all watch it?
I only watched two episodes but the music for the show does it justice cause world class sinner, fill the void, one of the girls, double fantasy, and popular is something good
The Weeknd and sexy/attractive are antonyms.
World class sinner grew on me too lol I listen to it on Spotify and accidentally learned all the words oops
I really liked the show towards the end. Depp has a lot of potential
the way that i’ve been waiting for this.
I definitely thought I was the only one who stopped liking the Weekend after watching this
This show wasn’t as bad as I expected, nor was The Weeknd’s acting (though, it DEFINITELY had it’s 🧀🌽🧀🌽🧀 moments…). I liken it to the OPPOSITE of how when people RAVE about a movie so much…yet when YOU get to see it, you’re like “ummm, 😒😒😒 it was AIGHT???”.
miss you boo!!!! ❣️
Omg i started watching your channel when you were making gw/dc content and i also moved to cali (sf) recently and i love it so much compared to dc lol
It is as bad like at some points i was like ooh okay maybe sure interesting but they didnt do it well in my opinion
The end product certainly was, shame Sam Levinson was atttached in the first place, cuz it sounds like everything before his involvement was way better and less skeevy
Thanks for the video!
Jocelyn turning out to be the real villain of the show reminds of that Taylor Swift song, "Mastermind" where she says:
What if I told you none of it was accidental
And the first night you saw me nothing was gonna stop me
I laid down the groundwork and then just like clockwork
The dominoes cascaded in a line
What if I told you I'm a mastermind
And now you're mine
It was all by design
Cause I'm a mastermind
But the lyrics of Taylor Swift's song are actually good where as Jocelyn doesn't even have a power song. All I remember is 'I'm just a freak yeaaah' and her character being in power makes no sense.
I dont understand why people see Jocelyn as a villian. The ending reveals destiny and joss as heros and the rest of Jocelyns posse as villians...
Or is it just other parts of the Sam Levinson/Weeknd vision that got cut that you're saying was worse?
im annoyed. all i needed to hear that it is not worth the watch because i would’ve been so pissed.
