One thing you didn't mention in the video is that you also need to enable "transmit" on the GMRS channels after expanding the frequency ranges. I see other guys (probably newbies in the radio world, like myself - ain't nothing wrong with that!) mentioning the same issue after following the steps in the video and still getting the FRQ OVER tone when hitting PTT.
I've been using the GMRS version for a while now and am quite happy with it. I just ordered the ham version. Great radios overall and Mark has a great business selling them. Very happy with him as well.
Thanks for the vid! I ordered the uv9px last week for gmrs use because it's in stock now while the uv9Gx version is on 10 week backorder. I suspect they are the same radio with only the firmware being different.
Mostly correct. Each version is also power-tuned for the band it's designed for (for max possible/legal output), but otherwise, they are the same platform with a different antenna and different firmware. :)
Planning on getting this soon , just nice ham radio to go with my nagayo 771 na .. it’s sucks my uv-5r doesn’t pickup any signals.. time to go for a quality HT

There’s an identical radio to this but it’s locked to Gmrs frequencies for tx. My radios are quality made ones and it should not be illegal to use a ham radio on Gmrs. I am operating my ham radio within Gmrs specs. why the law? my guess is to make someone money. it dosen't make sense. i am glad to find out it can be unlocked.

12.20.2024 - i couldn't get the Wouxon or Chirp software to recognize the radio on Windows (it's probably a driver issue). I tried Chirp on the apple macbook and it worked!
This does NOT appear to work anymore. I've expanded the frequency range in Chrip and used the Wouxun software to turn on modulation for all GMRS channels but the radio still says Freq Over when I try to transmit. Edit: On the channels programming page, you have to change the Duplex settings from "off" to blank for non-repeater channels.
If you have a HAM license you should know the answer. It's on the test! The short answer is no. Use a HAM radio for HAM and a GMRS for GMRS. In an emergency you can use either. That said, I doubt anyone would know or care what radio you're using for what purpose as long as you're not causing issues!
I just tried it out and got it working. Something to note, I can access the GMRS, but not through the channel mode. I have to input them in frequency mode
the frequencies you're showing using chirp in the video if i setup the radio to what is showing on the video will the radio be open to use . i downloaded the sofware thank you great video
@@1pa4u2c Just try trial and error. I'm not sure how far you can go. You will not harm the radio. For me I just included all of the HAM and GMRS in the range.
@@MidAtlanticTV I think you misunderstand. I'm not talking about the power 'setting' but the actual watts output at a given setting. My ft-65 at high(5 watt) still puts out 5 watts on GMRS but my ft-5dr on high(5 watt) only puts out 2-3 watts when on GMRS freqs.

Does unlocking the GMRS frequency’s also make it illegal to then transmit on the HAM frequencies? Or is it ok to unlock gmrs and solely tx on the ham frequencies without an emergency?
In an emergency situation when life or property are threatened, you can transmit on any frequency. As far as him radio frequencies go as long as you follow the rules of your license you’re good.

How do you get Chirp to work with the radio? Whenever I try to download from radio, it tells me the software is under development, and I choose Wouxun, and UV9PX.
Sucks that everything is a trade-off. I am looking for HT that is: budget (like under $50 ea) dual band, 5w or better, unified display, usb-C to radio and battery and has cradle, chirp compatible, two knobs is not required but a HUGE plus, water resistant, can be unlocked for GMRS and MURS and ham. cant find it. This UV9 is real nice, but its $200 and i am really trying to get everything to USB-C. KD9IRA
Seriously, I had to fig for the Wouxun software for mine. Will thr unlock survive a reset doing it this way? Don't forget to read the outta the box code plug from the radio FIRST THING so you can get everything back after a reset
Seriously Matt, I wanted to meet a woman that looked like Ann Margaret in her 20's, had loads of money, wanted to have my children, and gave me expensive cars and homes as presents (I did get two of those on my wish list). Guess you're just out of luck. Maybe someday folks will add the more expensive options in radios and then give them away for free, plus figure out how to get the FCC to change its rules to allow what you want, but not today.
Can the KG-UV9D Plus in CHIRP be used with this radio? From what little I've gathered all the KG-UV9x radios are basically the same under the skin, just different power settings. Thanks.
Would have been nice of your whole computer screen had been on camera. Didn't see what you loaded in the software. Did you load from the radio or from a file? If I download from the radio memery I get a "none type object is not iterable" error. What driver did you use to load the radio?
I was running Chirp on a MAC and I just selected download from radio and it worked. I know on some computers getting the handshake with the radio can be an issue. Maybe port issues??
Curious… How does anyone know if you have jailbroken your radio and that you are broadcasting gmrs on a ht ham radio? I have this radio and a KG-1000G and would like to talk between the two and still scan other bands. I am working on my ham technician license.

@@ngf7525 Legal GMRS radios can’t be unlocked, so if you want that extra emergency use capability, a Ham radio like the PX is the way to go. For the record, it’s not legal to TX on GMRS with a Ham radio though.

@@prenger745 you need to enable transmit on each frequency as far as I remember. Watch my video again for the screen you need to be on.
Change the Duplex on each channel from off to blank.

make sure your antenna can handle whatever frequency you're planning on transmitting in, after SHTF it is too late to find out it's not tuned.

Thanks for your order! The Smiley telescopic Tri-Band antenna at BSR is a really good one to have in the BOB. It can tune for GMRS or MURS also.

You need to make sure transmit is also enabled for each channel. You do all this in chirp. You can also specify the transmit power.
Excuse my ignorance, but could expand a little on your answer. Do I program the gmrs channels into the radio first and then all TX with Chirp?

Is the power output the same on GMRS? Many mars mod ham radios transmit at reduced power on GMRS.
You can adjust the power for each channel.

A retevis cable and that cable works with lots of radios like tidradio and BAOFENG.

I'm a little confused with how many limits there are. Do you need to set the desired upper and lower limit for every line?
I got the range extension accomplished. Then I realizes I have to change all the preprogrammed channels that say no transmit.

It should work fine on Windows. You may need to install the correct USB driver software though.

Yep, no one makes the perfect radio! But this one is very nice. I believe they also have batteries with USB charging.

Better safe radio has usb c compatible batteries for this radio now and even come with additional belt clip.

Ya when I try this the settings tab is completely empty. Chirp is running off a different model driver.

How many frequencies can it be jail broken on?
Not sure. I expanded mine to include GMRS and MURS.
