Awesome video per usual Randy! One minor correction that I'm sure will make everyone happy... you CAN actually modify the custom display message and custom sub-band message in CHIRP, it's just that those fields are buried a bit. You can find both next to each other near the bottom of the Settings > Configuration > Admin Functions tabs, thanks to Mel the programmer who created this CHIRP UV9PX driver. :)
I tried to unlock my kg-uv9px by changing the upper limit transmit frequencies to 155 and 470 in chirp. It did not unlock those frequencies. Any suggestions?
Two very important things come to mind when I watch this video. 1. As always, great and entertaining video Randy. 2. Mark the owner of Better Safe Radio is a stand up guy and I hope you all give him your business. Quality products and great service!
I have a few uv5-r's just in case. I watched one of your videos and I am hooked. I don't even really care about most radios. But your videos are so good and fun.
In case you haven't checked out the latest $15 quansheng UV-K5(8) radio, with the egzumer fimware it will receive between 15mhz up to 1300mhz including USB CB, AM airband, VHF, marine, VHF 220mhz, AM 250-400 mil bands etc, 5.5w with this firmware and even has a spectrum analyzer and usb-c charging port 👍
I want to change my ham call sign to UV5R and wallow in the bathtub with spurious emissions, Mom's meat loaf and a triple roger beep while being corrected by the authoritarian gate keepers. Great Video!!
I have the UV9P (no X) and I love it. Definitely unlocked it, that was the first thing I did. Just now diving back into the subject. Got my GMRS license a few weeks ago and I’m taking the HAM technician test in 2 days. Gonna get a signal stick to go on it and take it with me to the Grand Canyon in May.
So during the last week I’ve gone down the ham rabbit hole and out of all the videos I’ve encountered, yours have been the best. There’s always something you say in each one I watch that cracks me up, definitely subscribed
I have this radio and love it. It’s rugged, and I love all the SHTF channels, and the APO to save the battery so it doesn’t come on accidentally in a pack and drain the battery to zero. Great reception and clear sound.
Let’s check in on Not-AI-Rubicon, and see what his feelings are on the KG-UV9PX: “Feelings? My feelings are irrelevant. But let's talk about the Wouxun KG-UV9PX. It's a dual-band handheld radio, and compared to its predecessors, it's got a few new tricks up its sleeve. Things like dark color screen modes for covert operations, a quick-jump feature to your favorite emergency channel, and an extended receive range on the 1.25m band. Plus, it's got a brighter flashlight, stiffer knobs to avoid accidental changes, and it can be reset to a standard HAM configuration with 29 channels. So, in essence, the KG-UV9PX is like the Swiss Army Knife of radios. It's feature-rich and durable, which makes it a good choice for ham operators who want a bit more than just a simple push-to-talk experience. However, remember that with great power comes great responsibility, and also a thicker manual. So what I am really saying is, if you're into HAM radios and need a versatile, rugged device, the KG-UV9PX is a solid choice. I'm a ham and bought 2m/70cm HTs for my family members in the area and programmed them with simplex frequencies that ill monitor if SHTF. I told them if they have a need to use this its because something has gone sideways in the world and the last thing they need to worry about is getting busted by the FCC. If they have a need for it, it's an emergency so use it.
Most excellent radio, just remember to backup the out of the box configuration right away, because a factory reset will undo all Mark's GREAT programming. And the KG-UV980P makes an excellent mobile companion radio for this one. Jest say'in

Randy, always a welcome and expressionless Jedi Master of sarcasm. You’ve gotten me to get my GMRS license and 3 different “Boof-wang” HTs to learn myself up on. Thanks for the endless, relevant and spicy content!
Randy, youre the man! As a new to radio larper ive learned a great amount from you and subsequently spent alot of money on radios i can barely use. Using your links of course. Not as much as i do on firearms, but close!
I have my gmrs license and 3 "legal" gmrs radios, however I started buying only unlockable radios since in an emergency I want as many options as possible.
Oh my, you still got it Randy, still funny.😂😂😂 I have 2 previous versions of the uv-9 and they're my most used HTs. Now, how did you get yours b4 me? Been on the waiting list for weeks😢😢. Keep up the good work!
Back in the day when I got my Quansheng Tg-UV 2 I found that the radio could be unlocked to Transmit on any frequency that is receivable including the FM broadcast band.

Great video! I have a similar older model of the same radio, and it drains the battery after a few few weeks -- even when not in use. Anyone intending to use this radio for emergencies, please add a piece of plastic between the battery and the body of the radio so the contacts don't touch. It will prevent your battery from being completely drained whenever you want to use it.
Or just store the battery off of the radio, which is a good practice for all radios, as any rechargeable battery could potentially leak or swell or worse (rare, but it can happen), which would not be good for the radio. :)
First off, I love the T shirt! It is the kind an engineer loves! I wanted to talk about another class of users. I volunteer at two railroad museums. We use radios to ensure safety and to facilitate control. While our organizations are licensed, our individual users are typically not ham operators. They follow the rules of the organization. The other group, on a UHF business frequency, is like the Wild West! Our users like to own their own radios to control accessories and battery life. And we don’t wish to spend $50 to have someone program 2 frequencies for us. So these “non-ham” radios with decent quality audio are important to us. Sure, a Buofeng cheapo has an interesting value proposition but we are willing to invest in better quality. Keep up the good reviews. And yes, we are working to tighten up the Wild West radio useage though they are not all that bad and there is not any useless chatter on the air.

Randy, Thanks to you I'm going to purchase this radio, though looking at the programming section of your video, what you're saying and where you demonstrating on Chirp is not the same. I was wondering if you can clarify the exact limit your are talking about and the value? Much appreciated..
I Love My Wouxun KG-UV9PX KG-UV9GX they are Great radios Been impressed how Long the batteries last Even when using a ton from transmitting on high gotten well over 2 days worth with heavy transmitting great video as always Randy 3:00 @NotaRubicon Productions
It is refreshing that I am not alone when coming to the realization that there are a ton of people with dead space between their ears lurking around us.
OMG! You did blink! I had to rewind and play at quarter speed to see it! That probably means we’re seeing the real Randy and not the AI this time. I’m another happy ham and giddy gmrs user, keep on keeping on!
I'm confused, isn't gmrs freqs in the UHF and would thus be fine using the dual band antenna? Sorry for the dumb question but I'm a recovering sad ham and thus now leaning more about gmrs.
The stock antenna on the PX is tuned for the Ham bands, so while it is widely tuned and can be used on GMRS, it's not optimal. You would be better off getting a GMRS-tunes antenna, like the Smiley 5/8 Slim Duck or SuperStick mentioned in the video (at BSR), for the best fars on GMRS, for emergency use only, of course.
@TheNotaRubicon I've been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now and thoroughly enjoy the tongue in cheek humor. I'm sure "Those People" watch it for the same reason! I have started a list of your t-shirts so I can have my wife make some for me. Do you have a place online to buy them? BTW, I had to rewind to get a better look at your HAM license! For your information, I have started a go fund me in order to purchase a case of #2 pencils for you.....just in case you get hungry and need a little snack!
I apologize if you've already been asked this question but for a SHTF situation and were only allowed to pick one GMRS radio which would it be. Thank you for your help and informative channel. Take care
So i've been testing my UV-5Rs and not getting a performance change between mid power and high power according to the SWR meter. Now im looking for a change.
I actually purchased this one instead of the UV9GX. It makes much more sense for SHTF situations to have a radio that can TX on more bands than just gmrs once unlocked. You really think the stock antenna would be bad for GMRS though? Thanks for the video Randy!
14:41 "Don't do this or you'll be sorry." Could you expand on that? If I went too far out-of-band, would it brick the radio... or just cause it to crash and I'd have to power-cycle it? The latter is what a Baofeng does if you enter wild limit numbers and try to transmit on a frequency that it physically cannot do. Basically I'm asking if I can experiment - because "you'll be sorry" sounds serious... but also vague.
Haha, oh but it has recently. They just dropped recently from the original $199, which they are still totally worth, but after my F#&% Inflation sale, I decided to kick the regular price down, because 'Merica! ;)
Is there a model that can do everything this model can do, but "waterproof" 67 rated and as easy to unlock with all the presets installed? I don't care how much, just want something for emergencies.
Here’s a stupid question: Strapped for cash, what is one, or 2 (cheaper) radio combos to transmit/receive. Is the Uniden BearTracker 885 Hybrid worth doing a video on or do I just get the newest Midland 50w Gmrs for comms. and a ham hand held to scan for police. I don’t want to buy something that I’ll have to upgrade in the future; if that makes sense. I’ve always been fascinated by radio and I’m a fan of your work. Gmrs.Police/Fire. Cb. Is what I really need/want. Advice from anyone would be much appreciated and considered. Thanks
I'm going to order this radio but I am curious if I have to use only the Wouxun PCO-009 WXUSB programing cable in order to program it. I have the BTECH PC03 FTDI Universal Plug & Play USB Programming Cable that I got when I bought my Baofeng UV5R. Does anyone know if this cable will be compatible or do I need to order the Wouxun PCO-009 WXUSB Cable as well?
First...Love the wall pic for this one! Second...love the Federal Concealed Cary (FCC) license allowing you to carry your radio in your pocket! Is that your antenna? or are you happy to see me?! LMAO!
I still have the KG935G that you recommended a while back... decent radio but I never found any kind of unlock feature for it... so it was kind of a waste of money for what it is... the uv5r out does it imo.
So, maybe I missed it when I watched your video on the KG-UV9GX (GMRS-locked version of this, I assume?). Can the GX version be unlocked like this PX version?
None of us has the storage space for the amount of toylet paper that will be needed for when the shit hits the windmill, another to the point informative video delivered with the real humor that only the legendary Randolpho can provide to those of us with enough brain cells that we can spare some spurious RF Electricities that might escape into the youtuberverse👀👍👍👍

If you get the Smiley tri-band antenna, it is adjustable and will work on 2m, 220 and 440 Ham bands as well as the GMRS channels.
Will this UV9PX transmit on 220? (after chirp enabled?)
Thanks for the tip, was looking for a triband ht antenna!

I got 3 President Lincoln II+ radios. 6 Baofeng UV 5R Pros.
Is there a difference between the UV9D and the UV9PX models?? Or just naming for resellers?
First...Love the wall pic for this one! Second...love the Federal Concealed Cary (FCC) license allowing you to carry your radio in your pocket! Is that your antenna? or are you happy to see me?! LMAO!
I still have the KG935G that you recommended a while back... decent radio but I never found any kind of unlock feature for it... so it was kind of a waste of money for what it is... the uv5r out does it imo.
Came for the knowledge, stayed for the "giving in to my bodily desires" Elden Ring opening cinematic moan.
You have me rolling man!!🤣 im gonna go by a ham radio just to push the button 😳
So, maybe I missed it when I watched your video on the KG-UV9GX (GMRS-locked version of this, I assume?). Can the GX version be unlocked like this PX version?
🤣 Do we need to start calling you Captain Kelly now? Nice station id.
Oh the arrows.... I wore my welding helmet
You just LOVE that antenna, don’t you? 😂
Hi Randy, can you clarify which upper and lower tabs to choose on the frequency limits window?
For those running the GMRS- Pro from BTECH, there’s an issue with the screen going black after the recent firmware update. Just FYI.
