Thanks, Dave! I loved that show, still do really. Charlotte's Mrs Garrett was literally the warm heart of both shows she was on and not the same without her.
She was a nice lady, very decent and friendly. A good solid supporting actress. I used to see her in Santa Monica park in CA back in those days. She was always walking and jogging. We engaged in small talk over a period of a year or two. I was a teen in those days. She was famous, but treated me like she was a regular person - which she was. *smiles*
I recall hearing that Charlotte had in her contract that if "The Facts of Life" were to fail, she would get her job back on "Diff'rent Strokes". I often felt that Cloris Leachman proved that Charlotte's roll on the show was still necessary as Beverly Ann acted just as much as a mother figure as Mrs. Garrett did.
I love Mrs. Garret! She left for the best reasons EVERRR! I recently left my job of 9½ years for the exact same reason! My BP is back to normal and in no need if medication for it! ❤😊❤
As much as I love Mrs. Garrett on both Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life, i also love Charlotte Rae for her role in the movie Hair. Mrs. G dancing on a table! Shocking! ❤❤❤
What a mean spirited thing for a reporter to say about a woman with so much inner beauty throughout her long and illustrious career! Don't forget that she also played the lovable Molly the mail lady on Sesame Street for a few seasons! I was actually surprised after growing up with that role and her having dark hair to seeing her years prior in the big screen adaptation of Hair looking more like a younger Mrs Garrett!
Totally agree. I'm not sure what Charlotte said to him during their interview...but, regardless, the article focused far too much on her PERCEIVED physical shortcomings.
Living for 92 years is truly a blessing in itself. I remember the moment she appeared on screen, celebrating her achievement of losing 25 pounds (that's a significant amount!). At that time, it served as inspiration for those who struggled with their weight.
That Family Ties episode when Alex developes a pill addiction was one of my favorite episodes. Thats crazy that episode was premiering in the commercial that week. I remember watching it.
🙂 I think when they got Nancy McKeon the show took off. Her character was the perfect mix with the others.😊 I can't even remember having Leachman on the show I guess I turned it off when Charlotte left........🤗92 years old bless her ❤
I first noticed Rae in a non-speaking role in the move "Hair." (She clapped as George danced on the table at the coming-out party for Sheila. I think she was beautiful. 92 years old! Woo woo!
I personally felt once Mrs. Garrett left it was time for the show to end. The girls , who were now all women, were all old enough to go off on their own . Tootie was the only one still in high school, but even she was able to graduate by the next season .
You're probably right. That said, as I mentioned in the video, the network was still on-board for a 10th season. It was only because Mindy and Nancy didn't want to go on that they decided not to pursue it.
The show was still holding its own in the ratings though not a big ratings winner and many things factored into why the network let it go in 1988. If you've heard interviews with the former cast members, you get different stories as to why. No consensus between them.
Cloris Leachman was good as Beverly Ann but she wasn't Mrs Garrett, and it was unusual that she would decide to adopt the boy when she'd basically just met him,and I know Lisa Whelchel refused to do the having sex for the first time episode on religious grounds, but if any one of them lost their virginity first it would be worldly Jo,not Natalie, but Mindy Cohn desperately wanted to do the episode and I think Jo had probably already lost her virginity at a much younger age anyway.
What was crazy is that, toward the end of the series, they were adding all these new characters. And to think that six of them were dropped by the end of Season 1 because the producers thought there were TOO MANY cast members. (The schoolteacher, the headmaster, and four of the girls). So, in the end, what did they do, they started adding a lot of characters again?
This is so interesting. I thought the show ended when Charlotte left the series. i had no idea it continued on with Cloris! Would you happen to know if any spin-offs were planned? Tootie's character would have been a hoot.
There were several episodes that were potential spin-offs. One took place in an all boys school and played like a reverse of The Facts of Life. It featured Jimmy Baio (Scott's cousin). Another took place with an Italian family who owned a garage. (Jo's family I think) There was one when Natalie moved to NYC and lived in an apartment with a group of different people....and lastly toward the end Blair becomes head mistress of Eastland and takes on a whole new group of of girls AND boys who included Mayim Bialik, Juliette Lewis and Seth Green. None of them caught on.
I don't recall any conversation about a spin-off. I think they were all pretty much done. But...I do agree that something with Kim Fields would have been great.
The last two episodes hinted at a potential spinoff when Blair Warner used her trust fund to buy Eastland (it was in financial trouble) and then took it over as headmaster. Obviously nothing came of it as the network decided to cancel the show altogether in 1988.
I love her in Hair, the only down to earth person at a snob party full of selfish, snobby people. Sad her musical number was cut from the film but remain intact on the movie soundtrack. Her song My Conviction an opera like song is my favorite on the soundtrack. I wish they kepted in in the film. Her dancing with the late Treat Williams on the table is awesome !!!!
Dave, im beginning to get addicted to your videos! I miss those great older days of our youth. And these retro commercials are SWEET! Thank you for doing what you do! Please keep it going
My older sister liked Facts of Life more than I did, even though I reluctantly watched many episodes with her, only because she was older and dominant. She "held the remote," so to speak, even though our family room TV didn't even have a remote. Good memories from better days, nonetheless. Thanks again, Dave. I really enjoy these short trips down memory lane.
This TV Series of the early 60’s wasn’t mentioned, so she had an early acting career. I remember seeing the reruns of “Car 54 Where You?” I’m glad you’ve mentioned it because when I was 6 or 7 years old, that was one of my Mom’s favorite 😍 shows. 😊
What a great show. I think she left at a good time. She definitely was the backbone. I love the story about how she found Natalie in the girls school. Lucky break. Thanks for the good times.
Yes, Dave I know about Charlotte Rae leaving The Facts Of Life in 1986. She played the role for 7 years. She did introduce Gloris Leachman as her sister to carry on the series with the girls for two more seasons. Not to mention the Facts Of Life Reunion movie in 2007. The surviving cast Mindy Cohen, Kim Fields and Lisa Whelchel in 2019 tv movie, You Light Up My Christmas. Also another mini reunion in "Live In Front Of A Studio Audience" back in 2021. And yes there was talk of yet another reboot based on the popularity of that special but sadly it never reached fruition. 🤗📺📼🙋♀
The reunion movie was aired in the autumn of 2001. Everyone returned except Nancy McKean. Still not sure why she didn’t come back. I remember my friends and I saying how excited we were to watch it, but how disappointed we were that “Jo” wouldn’t be there. I remember we kept saying “There’s always one who doesn’t show up!”
@@Mr.EmeraldTheGreen Yes 2001 I think I typed a 7 instead of a 1. Also Nancy McKean didn't return to reprise her role of Jo because she was working on her then tv series The Division plus she spoke about it saying she didn't want to go revisit her past. 🤔🤗📺👍

Let’s face “The Facts Of Life”, the show started to become a contrived joke. It was over. Adding to that, Miss Raye’s health concerns far outweighed any payoffs she’d have received to be in yet another “jump the shark” episode after another. As tough as it is to witness, all good things must come to an end. I would’ve actually liked the show to end with more panache than it did. It really was a “class act”! Ah, well. Fun post, though, Dave. Thanks! 👍
