OK so I just had my staples removed a couple of days ago. Here’s how it went. I applied Emla about an hour before, then took my ”as needed” meds a half hour before. The young girl (not a nurse so - an assistant of some kind?) in my GP’s office said she was an expert at removing staples; she’d done it several times. She didn’t know which side of the tool was up and which was down and first attempted to pull three separate staples out. Each time I cried out and said “you’re not doing this!” Finally she stopped, looked closely at the tip of the instrument, and turned it over. NOW it worked properly. They all popped out with minimal, if any, discomfort. At least, 35 of them did. The last one she tried for a while but blood was pooling in that part of the incision, so she fetched an experienced nurse, who managed to wrangle it out. Somehow it was almost completely embedded in my skin, in the shape of a square, with only one corner protruding. I pinched my skin near the staple so I didn’t feel as much pain as it was withdrawn. Lesson? Don’t believe someone knows how to use the staple remover just because they tell you they do! I wish I had a close-up of the remover tip so I could show you what I mean.
Agreed. Same happened at Tampa General. I was in so much pain. It felt like they were being ripped out. I begged for at least some lidocaine. They refused.

Hey there, first off you cats should have a TV show!! I find myself watching your videos for the entertainment as well as the informative aspect. I’m almost hoping to have a hip replacement so I stay tuned!! I myself will be having total knee replacement surgery in one month. I understand that pre-hab and re-hab are key. I’ve been doing exercises to prepare. My question is can you recommend a cooling unit? I’m the toughest guy I know, but I’m becoming a little anxious. I appreciate your channel. Thanks for your time!!
Very welcome J L. Thanks so much for the positive feedback - we would love to have our own show some day. You just never know. Good luck in a month. As for cooling units we typically use the BREG for purchase or the Game Ready for rental. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Thank you! Of course I’m a subscriber. You cats are my favorite show!! I’ll let you know how my surgery goes. Thanks again. Keep up the good production!!!
I've had staples removed after 2 knees, and 1 hip replacement, and had no discomfort at all. It does feel better once they're gone and you feel as though you're REALLY on the road to recovery now! ~~M~~
@@TalkingWithDocs Yes, I subscribed several months ago when I discovered it, and have recommended your channel to others. Great information and content! :) ~~M~~
Yes, removing staples does hurt. Having them removed from a sensitive area hurts worse. The first time I had staples removed was by a student nurse. She seemed to think she was supposed to place the remover on the staple then pull up instead of clamping down on the remover. Multiply that by 35 staples and see how it feels. Second time for removing staples after having been in for 16 days, was done by a seasoned nurse. I thought this should go much better. Unfortunately, the nurse was unable to do her job and talk at the same time, trying to answer all of my sister’s (who was my care giver) questions. Here I was spread eagle while they were gabbing to which I said “Can we get on with this?” The removal was not as bad as the first, but still painful. I had too many staples to count (my neck would not crane to the entire area of where the staples were), but it was more than 35. Hopefully, I will never have staples again.
I hate, hate HATE staples. I had them once and I had red inflamed skin and taking them out was horrible. I was told I’d need a c-section my first baby, (I didn’t in the end) and I said there was no way I’d agree to that if I’d have staples. Maybe they are good for some people, but they were horrible for me. Oddly enough I can’t wear earrings, surgical stainless steel, gold, silver and certainly not cheap earrings.
It can’t help but hurt. Nerve endings are real. Maybe it won’t hurt as much as you think it will hurt…but there is a pain factor. I thought the removal of the staples on the woman’s leg could have been smoother. Note the patient had to put their hands under them.
Getting my staples removed in 2 days after ORIF surgery…nervous but the incisions are killing me so will give my ortho a chance to look at the incisions which should be ok. Hoping removing the staples will help with the terrible pain 😩. Will let y’all know how it went. Love your videos…from a Canadian living in North Carolina! 🇺🇸🇨🇦
My staples come out tonight following surgery on a fractured kneecap. I have been worrying about it but having watched your video I am less anxious now.
Reminds me of my doctor telling me my delivery pains having my daughter can’t be that bad. I’d feel better if they filmed the facial expressions the person is making while the stitches are being removed.
I had steri-strip closures with my first knee replacement, no problems at all. Unfortunately, I had staple closures with the second knee replacement. It hurt the whole time they were in. When the bandage was removed in order to remove the staples, my incision site was infected, and so, it was painful when they were removed. The pain was also gone, once they were out. Staples were not a good experience for me.
Thanks for sharing. Luckily, my doctor used the zip line stitches for my knee replacement. Was a piece of cake to just pull off the tape to remove the stitches. Have you guys tried them yet?
😱 I had back surgery on 5/22/24 on my L4 L5 lumbar & a T-lift. I get my 30 staples removed today as of Thursday 6/13/24 at 1pm. It’s now 2:32am the countdown is on I have 10 1/2 left I soooo can’t wait they are itching & pinching....I’m going to drive there with an ice pack on my back, & take my oxy 30mg pain pills so I hopefully won’t feel much pain 💯🙏💯
Yes it's a bit pinchy but not painful and love your videos and yes I'm a subscriber and I look forward to the videos and still think your both cute 🤗🤗 .
I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I walked (well, hobbled around with a cane) on my ruptured Achilles tendon for a week before I figured out something was going on that wouldn't fix itself. Getting the staples out definitely hurt.
My TKR staple removal was excruciatingly painful. I'd had staple removal for a C-section years ago that did not hurt at all. I'd like to know why the difference! Inexperienced nurse? I noticed in the video that it was faster than what I experienced. Next time I'm requesting sutures..
Hi Deborah. Hard to say. More nerves in the knee and maybe because of the tension across the incision. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
I had a foreign doctor remove my staples and he had no clue how the tool worked. The staples were rolling out instead of folding. Blood was pouring down my leg from all the trauma and he just laughed when it was done.
Yeah my doc barely got 5 staples out in the length of your entire video, and it hurt quite a lot. Mine was for a discectomy so they were ordered to be in for 2week. Also getting concerned it’s now infected, as it’s very hot to the touch over 24hours later. Also mine bled quite a bit, like through the dressing by the time I got home. So we cleaned it and redressed it.
Yeah, that’s definitely painful. The poor woman’s body movements tell the true story. I wish I’d had stitches, not staples, for my TKR surgery. I’m taking lidocaine with me. My previous GP removed my THR staples and it hurt like heck. GPs don’t have the expertise to perform this painlessly. I have to be prepared. I didn’t cry out during labour at all, but I did with staple removal.
I have had staples in my scalp, and staples for both knee replacements. They hurt coming out a GREAT DEAL! Enough to make me weep. Blanket reassurances should not be made, and if a patient says this hurt last time, I would like a topical anesthetic of some sort, listen.
Hi SHalto142. Everyone is different for sure. Likely oral medication would be more successful than a topical though. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
A Doc told my granddaughter to put Vaseline on the staple area of her son’s staples ( on his head) the day before she brings him to Clinic for staple removal. It is supposed to soften the area for a bit easier removal ( not totally pain free for a six year old)😢
I had emergency surgery and now these staples are overdue to come out. I have to wait until Monday to schedule again. My intestines were blocked and they had to do emergency surgery so I have staples all up my abdomen. Nervous to get them out because I've never had actual staples before. My oncology nurse says to take an anxiety pill before they take them out which tells me it'll be a little hectic.
Just got mine out today. 9 from my lower back, were in for two weeks. The skin started to heal around them a little and it is a more sensitive area but some hurt more than others. The bottom three felt like a mild bee sting, two or three i really didnt notice and then a couple felt like plucking a hair. Overall not the most pleasant but i am settling down to sleep WITHOUT laying on top of pokey metal things in my back for which i am very grateful. Brief minimal pain for a big gain.
Hi Docs! 1990-compartment syndrome in right thigh. Skin graft from other thigh stapled to cover massive openings in leg. 31cm x 10cm (lateral); 12 cm medial.. a lot of staples! not fun but didnt hurt as bad as i expected. thanks for your videos! My mom is happy I introduced her to your You Tube channel. Thanks again!
The only reaction I had when doctor was removing the staples on my belly was the same anticipation I got when the nurse would come in for another blood draw. So many holes in me after 16 days in the hospital. Not another one...ouch all the time and I'd flinch when I'd see that blood draw desk roll in.
Mark H, I’ve got you beat. I was in the hospital for 21 days getting 2 lifesaving surgeries. On the last day the lab tech came in and asked where was the best place to get blood. I told her that all the good places had been taken, she would just have to figure out what was left. Actually, they were great at taking blood. Most of the time I didn’t even feel it. That was at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. Wonderful people there.
@@sallyann1363 "Wonderful people..." Agreed on that. The staff was great, fun too. Movies are full of crap! When time for a sponge bath the lady came in with some hot towels, she said, "I do the arms and legs, then she tossed a hot towel at my crotch and said, "You do that." lol
My poor Mother passed out for the first knee replacement when she had her staples out!!! 😓😲 With her second knee replacement, I took them out for her! Told her Don't you dare act up!!😆😆😆 I took her out for ice cream afterwards.☺️ That was a good looking incision line!
I have a pretty good tolerance for pain. When I've had Stitches being removed, they gave a slight sting. Staple removal stung for me big time. Broke into a sweat, also had 4 incisions in my foot. But once Done, all good. Breathe, relax, and it's over quickly.
I’ll get about 60 of them removed from 4 incisions from my ankle surgery soon. Six weeks wrapped up in a cast with only cast exchanges to see how the incisions look makes me a bit concerned/fearful as the skin around the ankle is so tender (esp since being in a cast)! The best thing about that day is I can scratch that itch without a cast, and taking a shower without the Poly-Seal bag!
@@TalkingWithDocs Subscribed & Liked! Could you do a video about how to appropriately reduce your post-op pain meds to reduce withdrawal symptoms? (I stopped my post-op meds this past week, and by Friday I started to have severe withdrawals after using opioids for 4 weeks. This cavus foot rebuild was the worst! Funny, but while some docs give you sufficient pain meds to get through post-op and PT, but how many docs tell you how to step-down or taper your meds to reduce these withdrawal symptoms. (I think I’ve hit 80% of Google’s Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) withdrawal symptoms). I know you’ll help so many people with this excruciating experience. So not fun! Thank you!!
Omg same. I had ankle surgery on June 5th with 4 incisions that have staples and my next appointment is July 5th so I hope they take the staples out then. Also hoping it doesn't hurt too bad.
I had staples from both total knee replacements. I was nervous about their removal, but was very pleasantly surprised. No pain at all except for one very minor sting on one of them. Much better than sutures. Wednesday, I get removed whatever they used on my total hip replacement 11 days ago. I hope it is staples.
I have staples removed three times. The second time I almost fainted I got really sweaty. But I was just nervous, but they do not hurt none what so ever. I never had stitches taken out
Love you guys! Been watching your videos leading up to my TKR of my right knee less than two weeks ago. They used the zipline medical closing device to close up my incision. I have had no bleeding and my ROM is 115 degrees so far. I am so glad that l missed seeing your epidural video until AFTER my surgery and my epidural...OMG that video made me sick to my stomach! Keep up the great work you guys and thanks for taking the time to inform and educate us!
It's not painless but it's not horrible pain. I have over 100 I got out. 32 in right leg and over 70 in left leg. If you got a good nurse that pushes down while gripping it it counteracts and doesn't hurt.
Had 33 removed from my neck after cervical radiculopathy/laminectomy. I told the nurse to let me know when she was going to start removing them and while I was asking, she finished. NO big deal... No anesthetic.
Had mine out 6 years ago, 10 days after surgery and swollen knee as well. I wasn't like the majority here, I was cussing every 29 of the suckers! I also had several areas of the incision not closed so they put the surgical tape on them to help close it.
My staples and stitches were left in 2&1/2 months too long I got 3 removed couldn’t take the pain they have to be grown in they didn’t come out like you showed how do I convince them to put me under to do it
In your opinion if staples were supposed to be removed 2&1/2 months ago which was 2 weeks after amputation of leg is that left in too long and should be put under to remove
Four years ago I had a hip replacement, they used a surgical glue and staples. Turns out I was allergic to the surgical glue, which inflamed and caused welts around the surgical area. It was all I could do not to scratch the staples out myself!!! It kinda felt good to have the staples removed, even though a lot of the itching was gone by then. I'm scheduled for the my other hip January 2022. With all the pain you've probably been in for so long, the staples are NOTHING!! Wish I wouldn't have put off the first one for so many years. I'd literally drive to my appointments an hour early so I'd have time to walk from the car to the clinic, and not have to use the walker or park in handicapped parking (even though I'd have tears in my eyes by the time I got to where I was going!). Good grief!!
Had my staples removed today-, very easy, no pain- easy peasy. Had a great chat with Dr. Weening with my list of questions, all answered thoroughly and with a sense of humour. Fantastic recovery and enjoying the physio appointments at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital - super staff and excellent equipment. I was talk with my buddy in Florida and he asked how do they remove the staples and I said I don't know but when I asked Dr. Weening, he said we have a video the subject.
I had open surgery for a small bowel resection, unusual malrotation made the Da Vinci robot something they could not use, hence the open surgery. I had the surgery twelve days ago and am going for my first Post Op visit this afternoon, the twenty two staples will be removed. I watched this video today just to see how it is done, I was a bit anxious but this video removed all anxiety from my mind, thank you!
You two are great! It’s wonderful that you are educating us about all of the steps in the adventure of knee replacement surgery. Thanks so much. Please do the same for shoulder and hip replacement.
Oh this video makes me feel better, I got 15 Staples and 6 stiches on my ankle I dislocated badly and broke it in 3 places and I go see my surgery on the 19th but this happened on the 6th..
Thanks for this video Doctors. I will be having 24 staples removed six days from now, and watching your video, as well as hearing your comments, has relieved me of my concerns.
People, don’t let them lie to you, mine hurt like hell. I would rather deal with the pain from breaking my leg 10X over and over again compared to getting staples removed.
having had both sutures and staples more than a few times, the worst part has always been the surgeon always wants to wait 10 to 14 days for removal, by then skin has grown over them making their removal more ouchy, when my brother had by-pass surgery after they wired his breast plate back together they used glue to close up the incision, nothing left but a thin pencil line scar, couldn't you do the same with sub surface dissolving suture and glue?
The main issue for the hip and knee is more tension across the incision than a sternotomy Harry. But fair question for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I recorded my staple removal ( TKR) , is that odd? (whispers) I love anything medical.hehe, it took her about four tries ( very pinchy yes) on the first one but after that they came out fairly quickly. I pushed the scar together and used butterfly bandages to minimize the scar and it looks great. 🇨🇦
After an accident, I had surgery for a ruptured spleen (vertical mid-line laparotomy) and was closed up with a row of staples. After a couple of weeks in the hospital, the spleen repair failed and I went back into surgery. A doctor or resident or somebody started pulling out the staples while I was still awake and it hurt like hell. It hurt so bad I could barely speak to tell them how bad it hurt. Another couple of weeks when discharge time was drawing near, it was time to get that set of staples out. An RN or PA working quietly, carefully released each staple before pulling it out and it was fine, no pain or discomfort. It all depends on how it is being done.
I had some staples on my head from a craniotomy. staples were definitely in a position where i couldn't see them, unlike this knee procedure here, but I could feel the stapes coming out. Nothing like pain, just kind of a weird sensation for a minute and then it was all done
I'm watching this because I'm getting my staples removed tomorrow and I'm scared
Did it hurt?

Had Ankle surgery. Removing staples was “very” uncomfortable but I was so glad to have them out. A lot less pain once staples were removed.
SO glad my doc didn’t use staples. I asked about it and he said we have much better ways to close now with less scarring. He was right!

Very nice Roy&Mavis. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs Yes, I subscribed several months ago when I discovered it, and have recommended your channel to others.
Thank you for sharing Sally Ann. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

@@lizabethhealy5803 yes, it looked like they arched their back several times, like trying to make it hurt less.
Good luck!
My staples come out tonight following surgery on a fractured kneecap. I have been worrying about it but having watched your video I am less anxious now.
That’s the goal is to reduce some anxiety. You’ve got this Julie! Thanks for watching and subscribing
Reminds me of my doctor telling me my delivery pains having my daughter can’t be that bad. I’d feel better if they filmed the facial expressions the person is making while the stitches are being removed.
Ha fair enough. Thanks for watching and subscribing
That’s too bad Carla. It’s over now! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Thanks for sharing. Luckily, my doctor used the zip line stitches for my knee replacement. Was a piece of cake to just pull off the tape to remove the stitches. Have you guys tried them yet?
Hi Hartflame. We have seen them but do not use them in our practice. Nice for you! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I had double knees surgery Last year and when they took off the waterproof bandage it was like a waxing..lol Love your videos. Linda U.S.A.

It’s now 2:32am the countdown is on I have 10 1/2 left I soooo can’t wait they are itching & pinching....I’m going to drive there with an ice pack on my back, & take my oxy 30mg pain pills so I hopefully won’t feel much pain

That had to be a short incision!😉
I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I walked (well, hobbled around with a cane) on my ruptured Achilles tendon for a week before I figured out something was going on that wouldn't fix itself. Getting the staples out definitely hurt.
Yes back there is sensitive Charlotte. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
My TKR staple removal was excruciatingly painful.
Reading all the comments made me realize I’m much more of a wimp than I ever realized. Best case I’d barf - worst case I’d pass out.
That’s pretty funny. Thank you for watching and subscribing
I had a tibial plateau reconstruction.
Staples were no problem...
But, the drains on the other hand.. Not so much fun.
I do not recommend...
Yes the drains Doug! Can be painful. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Yes, I found staples much more painful than stitches.
It can be Glenda. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Yeah, that’s definitely painful.
Well, mine did hurt, sorry. But, once it was done it was done and that pain went away quickly.
Glad to hear it Deb. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
It was an “Ouch” when each one came out so my experience was a bit uncomfortable.
Sorry to hear that
I’m getting 15 removed from my stomach tomorrow. They have been in for 4 weeks, 10 days longer than they needed to be. I’ll update tomorrow.
Ok good luck!
Didn’t hurt a bit, and took less than a minute. Thanks for making this video, it made me less nervous going in today.@@TalkingWithDocs
Hold ice on the incision for 15 min or more before removal-no pain!
Good call Cindi!

The only reaction I had when doctor was removing the staples on my belly was the same anticipation I got when the nurse would come in for another blood draw. So many holes in me after 16 days in the hospital. Not another one...ouch all the time and I'd flinch when I'd see that blood draw desk roll in.
It can be a little uncomfortable for sure. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Mark H, I’ve got you beat.
Hi Denise. Thanks. Very sweet to take out your moms staples and ice cream to boot!
I have a pretty good tolerance for pain. When I've had Stitches being removed, they gave a slight sting. Staple removal stung for me big time. Broke into a sweat, also had 4 incisions in my foot. But once

How long do you keep staples in before removal?
Hi Brooke. Usually 10-14 days. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
I had staples from both total knee replacements. I was nervous about their removal, but was very pleasantly surprised. No pain at all except for one very minor sting on one of them. Much better than sutures. Wednesday, I get removed whatever they used on my total hip replacement 11 days ago. I hope it is staples.

Nice work Glen. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

Had mine out 6 years ago, 10 days after surgery and swollen knee as well. I wasn't like the majority here, I was cussing every 29 of the suckers! I also had several areas of the incision not closed so they put the surgical tape on them to help close it.

I had 2 large staples removed from my elbow when i was 7. It felt like my bones were being shattered.

Wonderful!
