Some suggestions to points above: Netflix was the only studio willing to back this movie. Also, filmgoers should read up on monopoly power in movie theater chains and the film industry. You can't break through to audiences today unless you are a comic book movie. Theater chains prioritize the opening weekend. Not because we prefer comic books over others, its that most theaters have no [financial] incentive to show them. They make quicker bucks on opening weekend vs let's say an original property in the 80s like Back to the Future which took like 2 months floating in theaters before it took off word of mouth. The studios, in turn, respond to this by making movies that can break through, hit that opening weekend total which is a sign in our culture now of a "good movie." They're bet is on "brand" movies. Do you see Marty's beef here? Weird original daring movies dont stand a chance, not like the 70s were studios gave more leeway to the new generation of filmmakers to experiment and fill theaters. It wasnt all great but looking back now it was a gold rush of classic cinema. Audiences today dont have those options. We are shaped to like what's there, because the gatekeepers decide what's there, and the gatekeepers now are not film buffs or snobs like Scorcese but CEOs in corporate monopolies.
Ppl should stop characterizing his comments as “dismissive.” Scorsese never called them “theme marks” as to say that those movies are bad. The point was that they’re different from films that he and his contemporaries make.
Since he isn't saying that, I'll go ahead and say it for him. Anyone over the age of 12 who contributes to the Marvel universe in any way, shape, or form is a pathetic man-baby and a scourge on civilized society as a whole. Ya follow?
I do get his point, and I did think that element took away from the Joker experience. Because when watching Joker you think there is no way this ends well for Arthut. In ANY other movie, he would've died at the end. Maybe as a "hero", maybe as an icon, but he would've died. But... while watching Joker I had in the back of my head that... well... this has to end with him somehow turning in the clown prince of crime, the apparently immortal enemy of the Batman who is still at the very least 10 15 years away from even existing. So... yeah. I do understand his point about having a fantastical script about an amazing character that ultimately has to turn into a comic book character. I get it.
That’s all Pirates was, but it also had a first entry that still stands as one of my favorite adventure films of all time. But yeah, Jungle Cruise doesn’t have Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly, Or Geoffrey Rush, and The Rock doesn’t exactly bring that acting caliber. Emily Blunt definitely has that kind of talent, but from the trailer, Jungle Cruise doesn’t seem to be featuring it.
Martin I totally agree with your ultimate point, however I've been exposed to Marvel's shit since I was about 3, superheroes just got me by the balls man, they really do
Sounds like a smart person expressing an opinion in a rational way. he isnt condemning the genre, he isnt dismissing its value, he is just explaining his reasoning for his viewpoints. the rest of society should try it sometime.
The film makers need the theatres. Very well said, he don't want the theatres to be annexed by the big studios so they just become theme park rides. People misunderstood everything he said about this topic.
I agree, Marty. The Joker movie is different from a superhero movie. Despite it being an origin story, it mostly focuses on Arthur Fleck. It’s about the person himself before he plunges into the abstraction. The challenge, now, is for the sequel to come off less as a superhero/supervillain movie and continue as a character study/narrative. It can happen. It just needs to deliver a really significant narrative on the human himself and the society he deals with.
The thing is that Scorsese’s movies are like novels and big books, while marvel and DC movies are like... well comic books. Both entertaining, just on different ways

@@gleekthemonkey4570 But that's just his thoughts.
Ya follow?
Listening to Marty speak makes me check the video speed every time

"✋🏻👇🏻👉🏻👉🏻☝🏻🖐🏻🖖🏻 you follow?"
😂 Lol...
There should be a theatre chain purely for grown ups
This is what happens when a major author has to live through general and fluxing fading away of their project.
Its kind of hard to believe how damn good this guy is at story telling.
DJ Khaled: You Know what I’m saying?
Scorsese: You follow?
I get it.
The interviewer looks like a younger Scorsese
Bro, that guy on the right is Martin Scorsese
Wait isn't Disney doing this with making their theme park rides movies? The Jungle Cruise movie looks like an abomination.
That's how Pirates of the Caribbean happened. It was a ride that was turned into a movie and then a franchise
@@falkofscrum Then the franchise crashed and burned
I'm gonna watch jungle cruise
That’s all Pirates was, but it also had a first entry that still stands as one of my favorite adventure films of all time. But yeah, Jungle Cruise doesn’t have Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly, Or Geoffrey Rush, and The Rock doesn’t exactly bring that acting caliber. Emily Blunt definitely has that kind of talent, but from the trailer, Jungle Cruise doesn’t seem to be featuring it.
What are you even saying ?
Its not like I don't enjoy watching marvel/dc movies but I completely agree with what Martin says here.
This man is the most badasses personality ever lived.
This is the first time I’ve heard his voice and it is waaaaaaayyy different to what I thought. He hardly sounds old at all
It’s funny how Joker is heavly inspired by Martin Scorsese movies.
OT S yes
‘Maybe this is my last film’
I cri
It won’t be so don’t worry
'' regrets... I've had a few''
I could listen to mr Scorsese talk all day
expected old man voice got young joe peschi
I just love how they talk to each of my ears
Martin I totally agree with your ultimate point, however I've been exposed to Marvel's shit since I was about 3, superheroes just got me by the balls man, they really do
Sounds like a smart person expressing an opinion in a rational way. he isnt condemning the genre, he isnt dismissing its value, he is just explaining his reasoning for his viewpoints. the rest of society should try it sometime.
He is in my eyes the best director in Hollywood i love all his movies, i just recently watch Taxi Driver for the first time what a movie.
The film makers need the theatres. Very well said, he don't want the theatres to be annexed by the big studios so they just become theme park rides. People misunderstood everything he said about this topic.
He isn’t wrong. I only started diving into movies because of superhero movies and comics. As of now, I can understand what means.
And his Joker would have been Robert De Niro of course.
"De-aged" DeNiro
I agree, Marty. The Joker movie is different from a superhero movie. Despite it being an origin story, it mostly focuses on Arthur Fleck. It’s about the person himself before he plunges into the abstraction.
The challenge, now, is for the sequel to come off less as a superhero/supervillain movie and continue as a character study/narrative.
It can happen. It just needs to deliver a really significant narrative on the human himself and the society he deals with.
Scorsese should never be questioned
The thing is that Scorsese’s movies are like novels and big books, while marvel and DC movies are like... well comic books. Both entertaining, just on different ways
Well said.
Well u need to read Allen Moore work
@@fakeextrovert2240 Alan Moore books are on a different level dude
Entertainment vs art
@@thepillowhead2453 "Alan Moore books are on a different level dude"
They are still comic books, dummy. The name "comic books" has no bearing on its quality. There are good comic books and bad comic books just like everything else.
*And then he fed Martin’s story with a very gentle, flute like tune* ( 00:28 )
Can't stop idiots from paying money for hollow superhero movies.
Not all super hero movies are hollow
He made that film it was the underrated king of comedy
