    Forgot to mention the most obvious reason why it outsells it 10 to 1: reliability and longevity. People dont like to keep repairing and keep spending extra money to fix volkswagens thats why more people buy Corollas.

      Alexander11080 The 2015 Golf sucks! Also, the Toyota's are by far sold more world wide. Also, those Golfs are A LOT more expensive than the Corrola's. Nearly all Golfs are equipped with an 90 or 110HP engine. Also, those Golfs are MANUAL! The Corolla is cheaper and has much more performance with the guaranteed reliability. The Golf only wins in exterior appearance. The rest, the Golf loses miserably.

    The corolla is an economy car dressed to look like a premium car. The golf is a premium car dressed to look like an economy car. I bought a Golf and drove every single competitor except the lancer. It was almost a 3 way tie between the Mazda3, Focus and Golf. The deal breaker on the Focus was unreliability, MyFordTouch, and cramped interior. The Mazda3 dealbreaker was the build quality glitches, cramped rear seat, and unrefined engines and noise. The Golf was about 3 grand more than a Mazda3 but it's so worth it. I feel like I'm driving a C class competitor.

    • @FiredEmpire
      @FiredEmpire 9 лет назад +4

      Brandon Friesen This is probably one of the most illogical comments I've read. To tell the truth the VW Golf has the unreliability of the Ford and the "build quality glitches" of the Mazda (I don't know what it means as many surveys and statistics have shown Mazda is one of the most reliable auto brands, unlike VW and Ford). Also the Golf, just a generic yet adequate FF hatch back, can never be a C class competitor since even the much more premium Audi A3 or A4 can't match the benz.

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 9 лет назад +4

      averagejoe Smh...I said it FEELS like a c class competitor. I didn't say it was, I said it FEELS like it because of the interior quality. And look at owner satisfaction, VW is the 3rd highest auto maker with the best customer satisfaction, so if they were super unreliable, people obviously wouldn't be satisfied. And no my comment wasn't illogical. The corolla is a boring car, styled to look exciting. The golf is a premium car that looks like every other hatcback on the road. And yes Mazda has quality glitches. I work for them and they have major build quality issues on the exterior.

      Enjoy the electrical problems and faulty mechanicals of your VW.
      Been there, done that when I was 21.
      Now that I'm 30 I realize what shit VW cars are. Just because they FEEL great means nothing.
      Having purchased a brand new VW Rabbit in 2008, and a 2016 Corolla last March, I can say without any doubt that yes, the Toyota feels far cheaper. But you know what- it hasn't been a shop whore like my VW was. Do you have any idea how inconvenient getting your car towed an hour away to the nearest dealership can be?!

    As a Golf owner and someone who drives Corollas daily for a rental car company, I can say that the Golf is a light years more enjoyable and better put together car than the Corolla. However, I will say that since my company has gotten a lot more of the current gen Corolla (as reviewed here) and not the older model, I will say that its way better than it used to be. Still not as good as Golf, but I would dare say its better than the Civic and maybe even the Focus.

    My first car was a 93 Camry LE. I adored that car right up until the day I sold it off and when I did I sold it with not a single issue at all mechanically after more than 180,000 miles on the clock. An absolutely phenomenal car. This is why people buy Corollas and Camrys. And I can't say I blame them. Hell, if I had a wife and a couple kids and weren't in my lower twenties and single, I'd consider a Camry or Accord first. They're reliable and rock solid. That said, I own a 2015 GTI. And I completely agree with this video (considering the GTI is obviously very similar to the Golf).
    I tried everything in the range. The Focus ST, the Mazdaspeed 3, the Civic Si, the WRX, and a few others. Some cars were better in some respects. The WRX was just a joy to drive. An absolute thrill. The Focus ST was very taught with a competitive price to performance. The Civic Si had one of the best shifters I've ever tried and it's a Honda so it's bulletproof. The Mazdaspeed was a hoot as well. But when you step back and take a look at the whole package, I drove home in the GTI. As an entire package, there's a lot on offer from interior build to daily comfort to practicality etc.
    Am I worried it won't be as reliable as a Toyota or a Honda? Oh yeah... I am... there's a likelihood it'll give me more problems than either of those brands. But that's the trade off when buying a car. They all have strengths and weakness. At the end of the day, be smart. Buy what makes you happy and take the good with the bad.

Comes with a stock turbo its a tuner's delight... just a ECU tune and you'll be making over 300+ HP and 300+ torque... all for what ?? 18k??? Plus the suspension is awesome for curvy roads !!!!!

      AutoGuide.com The problem for the Golf is depreciation. According to Edmunds, after 5 years the Corolla will depreciate about $8000 and the Golf $10000. So the 5-year cost of ownership is at least $4,000 less for the Corolla. The direct injection and turbocharging in the Golf makes it fun to drive, but they are reliability concerns over the long-term. That said, the Corolla's engine is indeed getting very old and I hope they roll out new ones next generation.

      TheEquationSlayer That old Toyota engine is good for 300,000 miles. Just keep the oil and radiator fluid clean and the spark plugs changed. Even the belts hoses water and fuel pump will go 300,000. I have done it so many times. I have PURCHASED Corollas at 200,000 miles and run them another 100k. No one wants a VW with more than 60,000 miles on it. Vw makes them to last just over 100k. Baby it you may get 140k out of one. A few lucky folks make it to over 200k but not without major problems. The Diesel Golf is far more reliable than the gas one in the real world but you pay much more money for it.

    I own 2015 Golf TSI 1.8 L and the golf has the best suspension of any new car in that price range. It is very comfortable, even in rough roads. It is much better quality than the other cars we test drove like Corolla, Mazda 3 and Mazda 3 hatchback, Dodge Dart, and Ford Focus hatchback (base). Of all cars, the Mazda you feel every bump with and the Focus was noisy, cheap, and very slow (then again it was the cheapest of all being base). In my opinion the Corolla was the ugliest of all. S model looks sporty, but its way too plastic, flat, and cheap looking on inside. It was a very hard decision for me because I liked all of these cars, but Im more than glad I went with the golf. The handling is second to none. The only annoying part of the Golf is the turbo lag if you're trying to accelerate fast, but once the RPMs reach around 2000, it accelerates very quick. Our final decision was between manual 2015 Dodge Dart and Golf Auto 5 door TSi. I do not regret my decision. Very fun, elegant, comfortable car.
    Golf also won Motor Trend's 2015 car of the year so thats another point to look at. The milage you get in the golf really depends on how you drive it. Its really hard to keep it off sport mode because it's just such a fun car to drive. When I don't push the car in the city I average about 31/32mpg which is more than it is said to get... I rarely get this milage because I like to accelerate quick and like to keep the car in manual mode or sport mode. When it is in sport mode I usually get from 25-27. On the highway it is great and have gotten it up to 44 mpg. Overall, Id recommend this car to anyone. Go for a test drive.

    Bought a Mk7 Golf TSI with the automatic and I drive 2015 Corollas everyday as part of my job with a rental car company. The Golf is a much better car all around. Unlike this review, my Golf has no problems with crappy New Jersey roads and deals with all but the deepest of potholes better than the Corolla. It also is far more quieter than the Corolla at highway cruising speeds. Also, I can't get over the fact that the Corolla still comes with a four speed automatic, which drastically nerfs the fuel economy. The CVT Corollas are better. About the only thing I prefer in the Corolla over the Golf is the infotainment setup, but that's only because Toyota has USB ports while the Golf still has an MDI cable (WTF?).

    One more example that motor journalists have absolutely no clue and will always default to sportiness and more power! In there opinion the VW is much better but, it doesn't have the sales numbers to compare. It's not just about value but needs and the carolla meet the needs of a lot of people. I must say that the auto journalists are good for a chuckle.

      Aaron Walker I totally agree with you. How can you ignore 10 to 1 sales. Golf has great engine, interior and drives better. But it has serious reliability issues. We don't know about new generation and it is probably better but they won't catch up Toyota over night. I was expecting some kind of explanation about how Golf sells so little if it is so good but no chance. They just ignore their own. What a joke!!!

    • @aec258
      @aec258 9 лет назад +1

      H0okemh0rns Yeah well, you can't ignore the market reality. People know what they know and act accordingly. If everyone got Golfs instead of Corollas, VW would sell cars good for 2 miles and then you would go get another one. And you are getting conn'ed no matter what you buy, people tend to choose the least risky one.

    • @AW4WAL
      @AW4WAL 9 лет назад +1

      H0okemh0rns Please stop talking out of your arse because clearly this opinion of yours are not backed up by any reliable numbers. Here's one fact for you to digest; Toyota's corolla out sells the golf ten folds, because it's better value, better residual value, better track record in safety and reliability, better at providing affordable transporting, better engineering and better at meeting or exceeding the needs of customers. You need to recognize the placebo effect that some auto makers have, on you types, which they rely on to sell cars, most notably European ones; they are no better than the big names from Japan. It's easy to build a car when you can sell it for whatever you want, but try building a winner for decades upon decades that is cheap and they can't. There steel, aluminum, plastics, woods, leather or fabrics are no better but you've bought into the sales pitch for so long that you don't know up from down. So please, no one buys a one of the major European brands because of research, it's all based on emotions and the perceived status it implies.

      juan tafoya Mazda 3 is great HOWEVER in my opinion. If u take the mid trim lvl mazda 3, the GS modle, and the mid trim lvl Golf. The GS model only has 154 hp and the Golf has 175 hp with turbo engine. That's like Mazda 3 GT (top of line) engine. And the lower trim lvl Mazda 3 interior just feels a lot cheaper than the GOLF. Mazda 3 is only better than golf if you compare the top of the line mazda 3 to top of line golf (excluding GTI). Because in that case the mazda also has 175 hp engine and offers more technology. If ur a car guywho like driving looking for a mid trim lvl car then golf will be the better choice for you. At mid trim lvl pricing the golf just seems to offer a bit more. Hopefully this will help you decide if you are picking between the two. And in person the Golf looks great, especially the interior, particularly white with tinted glass. And its very sporty and quiet to drive. :)

    I'm well over six feet, and I've had no issues sitting front or back in the Corolla. It is now very good looking, roomy, efficient and inexpensive. It has the features 95% of buyer want, and many are standard, like auto climate control in the LE. It is not fast, but that is really it in the weaknesses category. For it's mediocre speed you do get excellent gas mileage. And it's quality reputation can't be matched. You are hard pressed to get more value from a sub-$20k car than from the Toyota Corolla

    I don't know why the Golf is perceived so differently here in Europe, the quality of post service maybe? Does it makes any difference that they're made in Germany?
    Volkswagen is seen as a somewhat premium brand and barely no one is concerned about their reliability.
    The majority of them are manual 2.0 TDI though, and the 1.8 TSI is only available in Seat Leons and A3's. The most powerful non GTI/R petrol engine you can buy on a golf is the 1.4 ACT 150cv.

    Say what you want about the Corolla, but Toyota put the money into what matters. Alloys, CVT, LED headlights, backup camera, power everything, etc, etc, and infotainment software that is easy to use. But that dashboard's flatness is strange. Reminds me of a taxi. Maybe a 90's Caprice.

    I have had Toyota Corollas for decades now and they go day after day and never break down. Once in a while the stabilizer links up front need replacing, or the tires or brake pads need to be replaced as they wear down, but that's about it. Just change the fluids once in a while and drive without worries. At my dentist's office there are two women who have both gotten rid of their V.W. cars, quoting them as "MONEY PITS", needing endless repairs and always having one trouble or another. I would say this: buy a Corolla and live life without worries. If you want more power then buy the V6 Camry and live without worries (in the Camry, use Synthetic oil, that V6 sludges on regular oil.)

    I will admit, overall, the Golf is a more enjoyable car to drive. However, I've known too many VW owners who do all the maintenence on their cars and still have expensive reliability problems over the long term. When it finally came to purchasing a car it was between a GTI or RSX-S. The Acura was just far too reliability and visiting the VW forums I realized they were too problematic. 150,000 miles later my RSX hasn't given me one problem and I redline all the time to 8000 rpm. I've done an oil analysis, not one thing wrong with the engine. That's why ultimately makes many people decide to pick Toyota and Honda over brands like VW.

      ***** If you buy a Corolla, you end up with a corolla. If you buy a Golf, you get something that feels like it cost 10 grand more. I drove a corolla and threw it out the window of my considerations after I drove 1 mile in it. Unrefined engine noise, harsh road and wind noise and it was so terrible to drive. The steering was way overboosted and numb and the chassis felt heavy and slow. The Golf feels heavy but once you get it going, it feels as agile as a Focus or Mazda3. I work for Mazda and find the Mazda3 to be quite entertaining but its no Golf in other aspects.

    I'd prefer to be in a 2014-2016 Golf (the last year of the previous generation was 2014) than a 2014-2016 Toyota Corolla (the current Corolla) in an accident because the Corolla received a marginal small overlap crash test score, whereas the Golf receive good ratings, even for the last generation.
    Let's see how the Toyota fanboys spin that data.
    "Oh, you'll never be in an accident like that, so who cares?"
    "This is a laboratory setting. No accident is ever like that."
    2014 Toyota Corolla small overlap crash test findings: "Door hinge pillar and instrument panel intrusion was extensive and contributed to a moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg." www.iihs.org/frontend/iihs/ratings/images/api-rating-image.ashx?id=3051&width=800
    2015 Volkswagen Golf small overlap crash test findings: "Intrusion into the driver's space was minimal, and risk of injuries to the dummy's legs and feet was low." www.iihs.org/frontend/iihs/ratings/images/api-rating-image.ashx?id=3275&width=800
    I'd prefer to walk away from a collision (risks to injuries that are low to my legs) rather than have moderate risks of injury to lower legs personally.

      Anthony Flexas- Flexas It's not just laughable VW reliability, it's the incompetent VW service centers. Unable to duplicate problems & waiting months for parts.

    • @anthonyflexas

      Ivan Vojt I had a Vw Passat that would just shut off or worse felt like it would lose power. They told me to use premium gas when manufacture recommended regular, sale and service advisor were great but not being able to "duplicate it" their no way to figure out whats the problem.
      Well I got rid of the car because I felt it was a safety concern imagine doing 70 and complete power loss on the highway..... Few months later theirs a recall for some gas line issue. Now my brother has a 2000 Toyota Corolla with 368K miles which he bought used that to this day give him no issues..

    How do you get such crappy fuel economy on the VW? I have a 1.8 TSI in a Passat and get better fuel economy than you. Driving from western Minneapolis to eastern St. Paul, I got just over 40mpg at least twice, cruising at about 65mph. My fuel economy from Aug 2015 to April 2016 averages 31.6 mpg, including winter, and based on fuel tank refills. I have no trouble getting 37 to 38 mpg on the highway. Jason at Engineering Explained got over 40mpg on a Golf GTI with the 2 litre engine.
    That 184 foot-pounds of torque in the Golf starts at 1,500 rpm and continues to 4,750 rpm. That's a key feature that you miss.
    And why choose wimpmobiles with slushbox transmissions? Man up and get manual. It isn't that hard to drive. Your grandfather can teach you.

    While not a big fan of Japanese made cars, but in this case I'd take the Corolla over the Golf. Golf for American market - is made in Mexico. Not buying any vehicle made in Mexico, has nothing to do with the workers skills, has to do with Management treatment of those workers. Just like I wouldn't buy any car made in China.

But if I was buying an econobox today and had only these 2 choices id save the money and get the Rolla. Of course the Corolla out-sold the Golf and deserves to: the Corolla will actually LAST. VW means issues with everything electrical, and fragile mechanicals.
    I'll take a Corolla 1.8 SMPI over the Golf's 1.8 TSI for one reason: VW direct injection engines will clog with carbon.
