FF13 was the entry i knew Square-Enix was becoming afraid of the Persona series when they decided after Persona 3 to add vocal tracks to everyday dungeons and mundane places to spice them up.
More likely the 7th generation of consoles had good enough sound chips to allow for it. If you compare the audio quality on the PS2 vs PS3 it's worlds apart, vocals in most games on PS2 sound muffled, on PS3 they're generally crystal clear.
I remember one of the mobs telling Serah: "How can you lift that huge sword with those skinny arms" lol I love this game and Serah so much
