      Austin Evans Why didn't you mention the pen and how useful it is for students/ digital artists in particular?

  • @tuberoako777
    @tuberoako777 9 лет назад +110

    You've forgotten emphasis on one of the most important aspect of the device. The high quality active pen and digitizer at this price point.

    • @BryanRollinsTV
      @BryanRollinsTV 9 лет назад +12

      ***** still cheaper than a Cintiq Companion

    • @tuberoako777
      @tuberoako777 9 лет назад +9

      ***** Just like the keyboard he's using and showing off but much cheaper. $ 50 (Pen) vs $130.
      IMO, it's the more unique and important aspect of the S3 than keyboards or Type Covers. You can use any other USB or Wireless Keyboard but there aren't much devices with a good Stylus as this price point (relative to most other tablets/ultrabooks).

    • @tuberoako777
      @tuberoako777 9 лет назад +4

      ***** Perhaps but as a Full Windows device with BT, Wifi, Full USB and micro USB (yes the micro USB here can act as a Full USB 2.0 port with a cheap adapter) you have a plethora of options outside the Type Cover for "keyboards/trackpads".
      The Stylus is also not limited to "artists" to be productive. It can also be very beneficial to students for note taking with little to zero noise compared to clicking keys or for faster annotations.
      In fact, not even for students, just for regular people who want to have a digital note taking device for cheap with a 10.8" display. Even a mobile business user that need digital signatures or quickly jotting down projects and not having to sit down then type.
      One could get a Note 4 for $ 550 tho but it's only a 5.9" screen with no native Windows Apps for specific business use/programs. No need for data transfers too.
      Back to the point; the emphasis on the Surface Stylus as one of the most important aspect of a the Surface product line is missed.
      If one is on a very tight budget with little to no use with the Surface Pen, then I agree that they should be looking elsewhere, like a UX305 on sale for $ 599.

      tuberoako777 I agree. Cintiq prices are ridiculous and the Surface pens give them a run for their money.

      @Dave-op4jh 9 лет назад +2

      tuberoako777 very very well said. Austin totally missed this aspect of surface. Once you start using the stylus the usefulness of it gets clearer to the point you cannot do without it. Sean Ong's video about it's capability when used with OneNote worth mentioning here..

      Why not put it up to the Dell XPS 12? An older ultra-book that also transforms into a tablet. Kinda the other way round instead of going tablet to laptop it goes from laptop to tablet. Since it is rocking a fully fledged Intel Core processor it may not be a fair test but hey, still worth a look into isn't it?

      Ryou kun I don't think they would block the program on their wi-fi network. If you are using a school tablet/laptop, then you will definitely have an issue, because schools seem to block everything that isn't necessary, like in my school, the computers are unable to right click, a very stupid decision in my opinion. :/

    Windows Surface was my "dream computer". Even though I was reluctant because of the price, I made up my mind to buy it. After one year using it, I kind of regret it. Main problems:
    1 - Keyboard is often not recognized (I would say once a day, and I have to restart).
    2 - System crashes more often comparing to my other experiences with Windows.
    3 - Screen is gradually developing more yellowish spots over months of use.
    4 - Insufficient storage comparing to regular laptops. This was no problem when OneDrive had the “online-only files”, which allowed users to visualize all files without actually downloading them and taking up space. Microsoft decided to get rid of this incredible function.
    5 - Charging connection got loose over time, and now it does not always charge properly.
    6 - Battery life seems very short to me, around 4 hours, and takes a long time to charge (comparing to my boyfriend's Macbook, it stays far behind).
    Of course there are positive things about, and in spite of these problems, in general I would say I am more happy then upset about it. But I am already thinking of buying a regular and more reliable laptop for my work. So for the price, I wouldn't really recommend it.

    It will be super slow to charge with many phone chargers and cables, but not all. To speed up charging, you will need to power it off.
    If the charger has enough power to charge an iPad or other similar sized tablet effectively, then it will also charge the Surface at a decent speed.
    Some car chargers will also work as long as the charger has enough power for an iPad,

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 9 лет назад

      89krx Usually I find people kick up a fuss about products in high price points somewhat unreasonably..... but hell yeah. Since the SP1 these keyboards are really shitty priced(even with the improvements). I'd say $60-$70.

    • @MrElectrifyer
      @MrElectrifyer 9 лет назад

      89krx Why so? Could you kindly point out ANY cheaper competing keyboard with built-in trackpad (with gesture support), back-lit keys AND ability to integrate with the tablet (instead of being a separate battery to worry about), which can act like a cover for the tablet's screen or a base for supporting the tablet (in presentation mode)? At the same time, weighing under 1lb. So far, the closest one I've come across is the ZAGG PROfolio+ (bit. ly/1ptdrqp); which lacks a trackpad ('cause iOS doesn't support mouse input), is yet another battery to worry about AND costs the same as the Surface's Type Cover ($130).

    • @89krx
      @89krx 9 лет назад

      MrElectrifyer you just mentioned also an overpriced item.

    • @MrElectrifyer
      @MrElectrifyer 9 лет назад

      89krx Then kindly point out a "none overpriced" item (for a competing product, not necessarily the Surface) that supports your expectations while offering everything the Surface keyboard does. Can't just be going around shouting "overpriced" "overpriced" when nothing on the market offers the same or more for less, that's just a useless tit crying :P

    • @89krx
      @89krx 9 лет назад

      MrElectrifyer Just because the keyboard for the surface is exclusively made by Microsoft and they can put the price they want... it doesn't mean the item is priced fairly. Especially when it is marketed as a necessary item, not a nice accessory in which you can splurge in. Then again, it is not that great of a keyboard either and the trackpad is ok. My point, $130 for an okay keyboard/cover is a little too much, given that it is almost necessary for a tablet (that was made to replace a laptop). If you can't wrap your brain around this... well... nothing more useless than talking to you then.

    "cheaper version" when you can buy an i5 laptop for the same price...

    • @timthacker3314
      @timthacker3314 9 лет назад +8

      Jack McCarron those i5 laptops are made of plastic, have low resolution screens, cheap mechanical drives and low quality due to low spending in development. Microsoft would have spend way more in developing the surface to make it compact and high quality

    • @jj_mccarron
      @jj_mccarron 9 лет назад

      Tim Thacker but i'd have function over quality any day...

    • @timthacker3314
      @timthacker3314 9 лет назад +1

      Jack McCarron the processor isnt the complete picture when it comes to functionality. The surface has a touch screen and digital pen input bringing heaps of functionality to the table that those cheap i5 laptops dont have. Portability also can fall under functionality because those bulky i5 laptops wont function as a portable computer very effectively if you in a situation such as high school where one moves around a lot and has to carry books as well. The cheap i5 laptops also mostly have very poor battery life, some going as low as around 2 hours or less of battery life after a couple of years. I would say most computers are similar value as you get different features for your money. There are some that are better value and some poor value but the majority are similar. Getting back to your original comment, the surface 3 is indeed a "cheaper version" of the more expensive pro version with i3 i5 and i7 processors and other better features. for the people who can handle lower battery life, lower quality etc. such as yourself, sure why not save money and buy a cheapo i5 laptop, but for a lot of people those are an unsatisfying experience on the whole as the processor is not the complete picture. If you dont require the extra processing power, there is not much point in sacrificing quality etc for it.

    I guess the Surface is a hint to what laptops and tablets might become, it just for those who want say a 15" laptop I don't think it would be quite practical to carry a tablet that has about the footprint of a 17" laptop, of course what dell has shown with the XPS 13 could mean that it's possible we could make a 15" tablet have a footprint of more like a 14" laptop. Which would mean that doing more laptop orientated things would be perfectly fine.

    Purchased a surface 3 and after several days I feel the same way about it that I did with the original iphone. It's clear to me ultraportable 2 in 1 devices are going to have their day in changing what we carry around. I really like this device. I have one of each ipad (and iphone) versions produced and I'm already leaving my ipad air 2 at home. Seems like costs are similar enough between similarly configured ipad 2 and surface 3 that I dont think it matters (at least to me) if one is a bit more expensive than the other. This is the first device in long time I am actually excited to own and use since the 2007 iphone.
    I started looking for a ipad alternative when I got frustrated with the limits apple put on managing photos on my camera card. I just couldnt wrap my head around them not allowing me to preview full screen pictures on my camera card and then selecting the ones I wanted to download or edit while still on the card. With the surface I have no such silly limits. Sdram, micro usb, and usb 3 ports to plug in and all the photoshop express and other programs I want to edit photos. The surface fits easily in my camera bag or backpack so previewing photos is a snap. Makes the ipad obsolete for me because now I realize it wasnt just that restriction I had been conditioned to. Now I have so many full programs once again at my disposal. Full versions of stuff I actually want to use on a device the same size as my ipad. Just kinda awesome.
    FWIW the surface 3 in the hand feels so much lighter and more manageable than the surface pro. Surfing the web on the couch it never gets hot, is silent, and just a bit smaller to be easier to handle. The kickstand such an obvious duh! improvement over the ipad.

    I have a Surface Pro 3, which is killer with Windows 10 installed. I disagree about the keyboard though. I went with a Logitech bluetooth keyboard instead at half the price. It's more flexible in use, and more comfortable. To protect the screen I put on a clear coating which does double duty as it also improves pen performance (more of a paper-like resistance). (You really ought to mention the pen.)

    For 150$, you can get the tablet, bluetooth keyboard, 32GB microSD card and usb host adapter (so you can also connect the mouse). It might not be as powerful, but it's much cheaper (+ free office for a year)

    I got the Surface 3 last week (128Gb model). It's just great. It's not the best tablet or the best laptop, but it is the hybrid of both. If this is the kind of product that you are looking for, the Surface 3 is definately worth it.

    I wasted my money thinking I would be able to download my art programs as a digital artist. I use multiple programs for my art, and I can't download half of them, due to it not being a regular PC. Luckily, as a student enrolled in academic online courses, it's easy to carry around and useful when needed, plus I find it quite easy to work with in terms of Word, Powerpoint etc. The downside is, I only really use the tablet for work and browsing the web since that's all it's really good for.. I got it when it was first released and it's been sitting in the box for a good few months now.

    I've switched from a Dell XPS 12 to the Surface pro 3 recently. It's really nice to look at and I enjoy having a tablet that lets me use all the apps I'm use to using on any Windows device (UI could be improved though), the kickstand is really helpful when watching videos in bed without the keyboard (which frees up space) however what really bugs me the most is that the keyboard can't support the tablet like a traditional clam-shell laptop which sucks when the keyboard is under something that isn't completely still such as my lap.

    Hey Austin, this is Christian.
    Hey dude, love the videos.
    I have a suggestion that might help with people that aren't familiar with the item being discussed.
    Try giving like a 10 or 15 second brief summary of what the item is and what it is used for, instead of just the name. Or perhaps it's function. then delve into it's capabilities, specs, is it worth it ect.
    I;m only suggesting this because i find myself rewinding the video because you enter the discussion a bit too quicky, it feels somewhat rushed at first. Just a suggestion/feedback.

  • @khanalprabhat
    @khanalprabhat 9 лет назад +1

    Austin I didn't understand what you mean??
    You said it is neither a good tablet nor good laptop. As you said following point.
    First point. "In 500 dollar (without keyboard+pen) it can do a lot more than another tablets". This mean if you are looking for tablet only than why you would care about keyboard. People looking only tablet just don't buy keyboard than it would priced similarly like ipad or galaxy note tablet.
    Second point (pera phrasing) "if somebody wants more upgrade to upper model and add keyboard and you are in cheap ultra book category". this mean you are looking to do more than tablet and expecting it to be pc. So not fare to compare to tablets any more like ipad.
    Third point even though you didn't say but you seems to me like you tried to say " go with pro version you are in powerful enough ultra-book/laptop category"
    Let's look your first two points. tablet wanting people would go only with tablet(no keyboard) and tablet which can be also converted to cheap ultra-book would buy keyboard. I think these two are different ideas.
    May be windows 8 is not that mature to be tablet. I don't know but whenever a full windows tablet comes we automatically add keyboard in it.
    Why we don't add keyboard for android or apple tablet?? If we add keyboard for android and apple tablet we can do lot more in them as well. And their price also goes up.
    Isn't this biased that if it is windows tablet, it must have keyboard??? Why can't we think to use windows tablet without keyboard like android or ipad???
    I have used android as well as windows tablet. I know windows don't have good app store and it is hard to use it in desktop mode, but it was good. Android has lot more apps but in any given time I was using only couple of apps which you can excess as well in windows tablet or in browser of windows tablet. I find browser in windows(IE 11 metro version) can do lot more than browser of android. So working in browser was not that hard.
    PS: I never used ipad as my personal tablet so I don't have clue about them other than what other says.

The surface pro isn't really compelling for me to go to just because of the steep price for something that i'm going to only use to browse the internet. Would you say the 4gb ram/128 gb hdd version is worth the premium over the 2gb ram/128gb hdd version? It would seem to only effect extreme multitasking, and off course storage can be expanded with Micro SD. Also, how does Windows handle Micro SD? Just as it would an external drive, or a standard size SD card in a laptop, with its own drive letter and the ability to put pretty much anything on it? So interested in this, but trying to determine the best setup for the price.

    I find this funny, people are saying that the surface pro 3 or surface 3 is shit because it cannot do what a laptop can do for the same money. Well I have the SP3 I love it, Im a college student and the SP3 is SO easy to take notes on and move class to class with I can view all my books in pdf and make notes the digital book. I can use ANY program thats a windows program that I want and if it is not a windows program I can install different OS onto it. I got the i5 4gb sp3. I think microsoft did well with this. It is overpriced if you are looking for a gaming laptop, if thats what you are looking for stop posting on SP3 videos bitching how it doesnt game... Of course it doesnt game its for business and school and your regular browsing needs. I have a super desktop I build at home so I dont care about gaming on the SP3. the only think I take to class is my SP3, open onenote, load digital textbook and thats that class. Easy day, if the SP3 is not for you its going to be apparent. You cant make a diamond from gold...
