Thanks Daniel for these no-nonsense tips. I appreciate you mentioning 1/160. I find 1/250 requires a bit too much ISO and 1/125 may not freeze the action so 1/160 sounds like a good middle ground as you say. One important point, depth of field is different on different sensor sizes. I shoot M43 and shoot with F1.4 and F1.7 lenses wide open which gives f2.8 or f3.4 full frame equivalent depth of field. If you were shooting f2.8 on the Sony A6400 that would be f4.2 FF equivalent depth of field. Light gathering is the same as you know.

I can't afford a 24-70 f/2.8 at the moment but I have a 35mm f/1.8, plan on getting maybe a 85mm f/2 and I have also a 135mm f/2.5 and an old 35-105 f3.5.
And I only have an aps-c
Do you think it's good for this kind of projects?
It's to shoot an aftermovie
But I really wonder how I'm going to be able to safely and quickly switch lenses on the field

Apart from the auto iso, we're pretty much spot on with same settings when it comes to aperture etc. I do like to go down to a 1.8 for some more artistic angles, but only if I already have all needed shots in the bag.
Yeah 1.8 is great for getting those pinpoint detail shots and like you said, more artistic stuff! My hat goes off to those who can shoot a whole show at 1.8 though they must have godlike reflexes and accuracy 😂

I don't think we've ever had a discussion about the settings we use so it's funny that turns out ours are almost identical ahaha. I never go above 6400iso on my a7iii, but that's the only difference.

Great video and advice Dan. Other than aperture I'm using the same settings. I've been shooting for just over a year now, been staying around the f1.8/ 2.0 not pushing above due to only working in Brighton venues and some don't have the best lightning. But I've recently started using f2.8 and upwards definitely seeing a difference in my work and loving it more. I will try your settings more at my next gig. As a Sony A7 user do you have any recommendations for lenses? I am currently using the A7iii. Also great WSS photos
Thank you! Yeah f2.8 just makes life that little bit easier and you end up with more useable content! My favourite lens that stays on my A7IV is the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and by switching to the cropped sensor mode I get a wider zoom range! I'm currently trying out some wider angle lenses too and recently used and enjoyed the Canon 70-200 for certain shots but the 24-70 is my standard

Superb video Daniel! Just started to do some amateur gig pics and got a Sony a7iii with a couple of 1.8 prime lens. Last gig I did I found thin banding on the pics, do you have any problems with this and if so do you know what am I doing wrong. Thanks
Thank you very much! I do have problems with this every now and again and it's to do with the lighting & your shutter speed. It's often a good thing to take a couple of test photos, quickly look for banding issues and adjust your shutter speed accordingly. It's likely that the lights were LED and they have a refresh rate (they basically flash very quickly but give the illusion of being constant) and your shutter is working against it. There are ways to fix this in editing but when shooting you're better off slowing your shutter speed down and it then gives your sensor a bit more time to take in the light and should eliminate it.
It's very frustrating!
How do you increase the shutterspeed when shooting in M? I use the same camera as you, but when I set it to M the camera will only allow me change the shutterspeed betweeen 2 and 1/30..
Very odd, I just turn the dial and it adjusts the shutter speed! It shouldn't be, but maybe it's something in your settings?
I am simply amazed with the number of "pro" photographers and video guys who employ one jump cut after another. It has become soooooooooo annoying I just have to bail. As I did with this video. I think reading articles is my best bet. These videos are just useless.
