Sway was big way before interview with em he actually did news for MTV…also Cassidy vs Freeway came before smack dvd and kinda catapulted battle rap in the form it is in now. It was the biggest thing underground it was on every mixtape that was popular before the RUclips came around and the video surfaced
_The Wake Up Show_ hosted by Sway and King Tech itself held freestyles and rap battles on radio. _The Source_ magazine also held tournaments, at least in the Bay Area, maybe in other areas or even other states. So even Northern California had a battle rap scene between the late-1990s and early-2000s that not enough people talk about. Two rappers that came from that scene are Mistah FAB and Locksmith.
MTV held two tournaments called _MTV MC Battle_ in 2002 and 2003, respectively. The finals for the 2002 edition was Locksmith and RJ Payne (then Reign Man) which RJ controversially won. To get to the MTV televised tournament you had to first come through qualifier tournaments held in various major cities. The Wake Up Show was part of that process as well.
Locksmith's interviews with No Jumper, Dregs One and AllHipHop are worth watching for those interested. He also competed in the NY battle rap scene.
I love to see Rappers battle rap famous or not famous it's always exciting and good entertainment 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Who shot ya wasn't a diss track... It was made before Pac was shot.
Let’s be real it was released when it was released as a diss by Puffy man
@@jacknapier6668yup Puff made it a diss, not Biggie
15:09 Helloyassine I'M SO DAMN GLAD YOU BROUGHT UP THE LYRICIST LOUNGE SHOW!!!! Highly Underrated ASF!!!!
When it comes to battle rapping, there’s more hunger compared to when you’re already successful.
Battle rap is still popping, just as snack
😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
In my opinion, Let’s go by Kool Moe Dee is the greatest battle diss record ever to be released.
He went in on LL Cool J. A lyrical assault.
Thought you d mention how Meek Mill was recognized through battle rap, back when he was going hard in Philly
4:31 That man is not Lord Finesse!
Dude this is trippy af! Idk if it was planned like that but this video's thumbnail and turkey tom's (which was uploaded righr before this) are pretty much the same haha! Great vid btw
Lmao 😂😂😂😂
I used to be a battle rapper I’ve only done it twice in middle school and won two times even though I wasn’t that great I was slowly learning more how to rap
😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I love seeing that battle rap culture is being covered by this channel. Great video.
Surprised there was no mention of one of the more dominant battle rappers that actially put out great albums...Eyedea. Dude was an absolute beast in battle.
Great history lesson though. I still say Kool Moe Dee won that fight.
It’s crazy to me how fast hip hop progressed in the early days. Just listening to nas or rakim vs busy bee or the furious 5. You would think it was like a 15 year difference
.rip pat stay, i watch him vs hollohan and shotgun suge all the time, legendary
Lyrical Wars is also giving a great platform to the sport in Africa.
.daaamn he even mentioned the WRCs and flip top, respect
You gon get this work is still a legendary line from a battle lol even Hove retweeted it. Shout out to Loaded Lux. Fire vid Yassine
I straight up booked for KOTD, ibattle, supernova, pitfights, Faceoff, I've been at events with Drake I've been flown to Canada I've been to California I've done a shit ton of battle rap events and promotion and co-hosting so I'm expecting you to mention some people I know and you better be on point with that reverse section lol I'm going to be watching and commenting if you ain't lol.
There is no way I know as much as you lol. But I do like to know more
It's a thriving culture!!! All restarted with URL, grime time and elements league and then King of the dot, it's an amazing scene. Glad you touched upon it!
HEY I BOOKED MARV! lol
You did really good man!
thank you!
You quoted jay-z apology a bit to clean 😂. You should have sounded like you were about to cry 😂. That’s how that man sounded
As a guy who learned to rap from battle rap, I'm glad the battle rap culture is getting a resurgence. It's the college football of rap culture; raw, real and free of corporate influence or industry plants. And considering the current state of mainstream hip-hop, battle rap is the only thing we genuine rap fans have left.......
As a battle rapper and hip hop historian, this was very well put together 💯
I am such a fan of your deep dives, bro. Keep it up! I am so here for it.
Damn no RBE love? It’s all good though. Thanks for this video, battle rap is underrated
Sway was a legend before the Em freestyle
Talked about the canibus ll cool j beef like it was early 90s when it didnt happen until 97
Canibus was running around battling a lot. Him, DMX and Cassidy supposedly battled a lot no videos tho
@@HorizonHipHop yez even wu tang guys. He was a beast back then The best is the freestyle with DMX and Big Pun at funk flex.
Em was at Scribble '97, not '96.. at the end you showed Jin as a commercial rapper who hasnt returned but he did do 1 round recently against illmac.. respect for having a more informative vid than I was expecting.. No mention of Grind Time which was the american version of KOTD that started slighty earlier than them.. Freestyle battles died out with Jumpoff & Scribble, who had their last events in 07 & 08 respectively.. Then Grind Time, KOTD, & Smack brought battle rap to millions of views by dropping the tournament format & having 1v1 written battles.. but lets be real, their views have recently dropped because its been the same gun rap shit for a decade now.
I love when you do these hip hop history mini docs!!
oh you mad cuz I'm stylin on you
🤣😭😂
CLASSIC
@@insuchaway yesirrrr 🤣😭
Supa hot fire
You can't talk about rap battles without Mentioning Cassidy
BEEF Documentary series covered this well
As a Filipino, thanks yassine for covering FlipTop as well
until halfway through the video, other than the mention of Canibus, the video is about BEEFS not BATTLES
12:19 Who knew DNA was Muwop older brother 😂
I got into Hip Hop through battle rap
Wow this is great content and history 👏.....how you like me now=classic.......jack the ripper =classic.
Also man sway needs his own documentary. Dude has been everywhere in hip hop
Mad dope shout out to you for this
I have that book in my studio 😅 never thought I'd see anybody ever reference it 😂
Never heard of a few of these leagues! How can you say it’s dying when it’s so global and thriving?
FirstYassine
you're a legend in these comment streets
Yeah this was a banger bro! Good job and research !! Subbed ready for more!!
rip Eyedea
You would have been number 1 if Trap Lore Ross didn’t exist
Put some respec on Remy Mas league
Eyedea was the greatest to freestyle rhyme battle cat to ever touch a mic. If you missed that, you dont deserve vocal chords
Damn Em been battling since 81
Shout out my dude big Russ DaBully. Out the Roc. Clinton AVE Finest
Excellent video. Top notch research.
How u leave out French Montana he started off battle rapping also
Reed dollas Cassidy hit man getchi gotti 40 barrs my favorite battle rappers 🗣️💯🔥🔥
Blind fury!
Busy B is one person, Starsky someone else this guys just reads off wikypedia and make it into a RUclips video
Good video topic 💯
Your clearly confusing battle rap and industry beef
Eyedea
Period
The best rap battle of all time was Kid and Play on House Party 💀
Eyedea.
Hey
LOL who was the white guy you referred to as lord finesse?!
Inaccurate info ... Show some luv for Cassidy...
Kool Moe D is a legend. Cut it out.
I just . . . He said mihoyminoy
where's the rest?
And I will haunt you forever
Wtf
It slowed way down cuz of covid tbh
Drill Rappers kill each other all day, everyday but you didn't say anything about them
Modern battle rap is soooooo corny now its honestly so hard to watch old school battle rap is still on top
You seriously rather watch Tech 9 vs Head ICE over Real Sikh, Rum Nitty, or Geechi? To each his own ig lmao
@gelo888 not saying there couldn't be Good battles but when your most famous act is dizaster your a corny sub genre
It got worse cuz everyone sounds the same style. Few stand out but seems 80% all sound alike. Wish there would be more original battlers.
If you been following battle rap close its messy asf 😂
Wildin out "Battle Rap" ?😂
Bro where is daylyt
Daylyt got his mention.
Daylyt need a mental care.
Moe is way better rapper!! LL is the bigger artist. L just played the game.
Indont like this video. You really did not research.....
Why doesn’t rap embrace its gay roots?
This video trash. You give an honorable mention to Cassidy who is literally on the Mount Rushmore of battle rappers and NO mention of Game or 50 Snitch who constantly creates rap battle/beefs. 👎🏽👎🏽
Battle rap anit dead the cash flow is
Wild N Out is NOT a battle rap show 😂
Dope ass topic @helloyassine this channel is one of the most lit 🔥 hip hop outlets out right now 👊 My name is Boppa and I've been dropping rap albums for sometime now.
