Makes me wonder about their tests as 58.78ms is 3.67375 frames at 60FPS... How is that supposed to make sense? How are they getting measurements with sub-framerate accuracy? Even if any system was getting better ms response does it genuinely make any difference if the content updates the same frame as every other device? That said, the PC (did they say Steam Deck) version updates within 2 frames with a 47ms response time without v-sync. Makes me wonder what the response rate is with v-sync like on consoles. Of course, this wasn't compared across other fighting game IP, which I find dubious considering that the only reason to check response time is for competitive crowd and honestly I've never heard of anyone being left out in the cold destined for failure because their HW was one frame slower than their competition (unless that frame took 166 or more ms to arrive than their competition - 12 or more frames longer at 60FPS, but that would mean someone's HW isn't up to the task).
great review. especially the steam deck info. the tsr upscaling tip made a huge difference. sadly using your settings on my (non oled, using proton ge 8-27) steam deck resulted in consistent drops into the 40s or less, especially at the back of complex stages like urban square. just in case others were having the same issues as me, here are the best settings i could come up with to compensate: resolution 1152x720 (really helps) v-sync on variable rate shading on rendering scale 50 (yeah i know...) upscaling tsr anti-aliasing medium shadows low textures high effects low post-processing low backgrounds medium expect to get a stable 55 in almost every situation (i set frame limit to 55 in deck performance settings), and 60 in most stages besides the urbans. might drop 2-5 frames in the far back of urban square day during heavy effects. if you want 60 everywhere, accept the extreme blur/ugliness and drop everything to low. but i feel like this is a good balance where things run acceptably well while still looking kinda pretty (tho a bit blurry obv).
My LCD deck was also having trouble with this video's recommended settings. To think that the OLED could actually have improved this much? Were there other performance tweaks in play on Digital Foundry's Deck? Maybe performance tweaks from ours that could actually be negatively impacting performance? I'm actually trying *disabling* most of the tweaks I've enabled on mine to see if I can attain the performance shown in this video.
I was obsessed with Namco fighting games back in the day. I'm over them now but it's cool to see the series still going strong. Love the new muscle flexing feature. Not a fan of the trend in overdesigning the look of these characters though. I prefer the clean iconic look of the classic characters from the T2-4 era. And why is Law so thiccccc? He's supposed to be Bruce Lee!
Motion blur should have a toggle, the animations look absolutely fluid with it on, i dunno why they INSIST on not including it on the console versions.
Because it uses a lot of recources from the GPU and they would have to lower the res, the current gen consoles are starting to show their age, not a surprise they been on the market for a while now.@@coruviel
The latency they achieved across all versions is a triumph. Tekken 7 had a bad rep on the console as it made some moves impossible to react to due to input latency
Amazing review, John. I’m also curious about why they haven’t added the motion blur option for consoles. Maybe they'll add it in future patches? Update Sep 2024: They haven't.
TSR seems like the only viable upscaling option for UE5 in general. I don't know what the engine's doing, but UE5 makes DLSS look like FSR 2 does in other games, and FSR 2 looks even worse, while TSR is not prone to artifacts at all even though its ghosting and temporal stability are worse than DLSS.
Great review and it was nice to feel that you really understand the nuances of fighting games. Super impressed. Great review for great game. Looking forward to playing!!!
It's amazing how they provide so many AA/upscaling options but don't include DLAA and UE5's FXAA & AA off option which is more far more relevant & useful than things like "Catmull-Rom Bicubic". For DLAA my reasoning as a UE dev is that it's a seperate plugin from DLSS so it's often an oversight. As for FXAA/no AA it's most likely due to excessive aliasing however from my experiments with the Unreal Engine Unlocker Tool I was able to fix the aliasing with some engine tweaks.
I played this on my series x day one for hours and I was just amazed at the visuals! I know my xbox was working overtime cause that air coming off the top was hot hot! 🔥
Even that’s Series S version is step down from Big Consoles it’s still absolutely gorgeous compared the street fighter 6 port Im playing it on 50 4K TV with HDR and it’s looks stunning , even with lover textures quality
Cool vid but something went wrong with either your HDR capture or conversion in some of this footage. It's really blown out. Check out the jukebox selection screen at 3:19 - the cover artwork highlights have gone nuclear.
Had no idea about the TSR AA. I was using the TAAU on pc demo and felt like something was off so hopefully the TSR will resolve that. Will give it a go later!! Edit: tried it out and yep TSR is a night and day diff.. looks soOoo good. Vastly superior! Thanks guys
For me vsync off and everything else is set to ultra with 100 resolution scale. I have a 4090 though. Game looks good with those settings. Can't quutr tell if AA set to low or ultra looks better.
@Digital Foundry: You need to play act 15 (the final one) of the story mode. There the lighting is significantly improved on the Fallen Destinyy stage over the regular gameplay and actually matches up to the original announcement trailer pretty well. I wish though there was an option to always play with this lighting enabled on PC regardless of mode
I really wanted to get the PC version but the demo had weird graphical bugs on my setup with an RX7800XT. Right after release I saw many reports of crashes and other bugs on PC so I’m glad I opted for PS5. Eventually they will probably fix the bugs at which point I’ll double dip. But I’m having a blast on the PS5 for now.
With two AMD computers in my household. 3700X-6600XT & 5800X-7900XT, I've had no problems with the demo. Since you have a relatively new AMD GPU, make sure you update your GPU drivers.
If you’re gonna test how well the final game compares to the reveal trailer, you have to use the story mode’s final chapter. Also, I hate how the cutscenes have that cheap Platinum Games look/feel to them, some kind of poor filter/cinematography that ruins the quality of the art assets in play. Tekken 7 didn’t have this and coupled with its in-game motion blur, the transitions between pre-rendered and real-time were far more seamless/impressive.
I wish you guys would take the time to test XESS on an ARC card. I find it incredibly unfair that you test DLSS on Nvidia, FSR on AMD, but not XeSS on Intel, where it works much better
Ahhh yes glad the smallest console base even within its own family of consoles has a zoomed in resolution benefit of 100-200p at best, really makes up for the shafting.
It's the same dude with the PS5 version. Whatever very slight difference exists in dynamic resolution won't be noticeable for 99% of the gamers. John mentions that.
Forgot The muscle physics its insane when character do heavy moves or powercrash or electric they're body change veins pop out muscle tightening up skin colour change
i Think that fight from the reveal trailer might look a bit more dramatic in the story mode. also, as soon as i saw the amount of upscaling options, i knew df would have a blast analysing all of them😭😭
Just picked up the physical disc for PS5 today. I used to love fighting games back in the mid-90s to early 2000s, but haven't really played them much since then. And even then, I mostly played 2D (although I had the first Tekken on the original Playstation). I bought this primarily to mess around with on occasion, and don't have any aspirations of going online or fighting against another human, so the inclusion of all the solo modes, plus the overall generally great reviews the game has been getting, really sealed the deal for me.
I am glad that John pointed out the loading time improvement, since it matters a lot for a game like this. Also for racing game like GT, I remembered I just can't put up with the long loading time for GT sport on ps4

Were there other performance tweaks in play on Digital Foundry's Deck? Maybe performance tweaks from ours that could actually be negatively impacting performance? I'm actually trying *disabling* most of the tweaks I've enabled on mine to see if I can attain the performance shown in this video.
wow, that intro-logo animation! :D shoutouts to whomever did the gfx for this.
The Arcade Stick support is a BIG plus for PC in my opinion.
Agreed I’ve got my pc connected to a custom arcade machine for all my fighting games
So nice to see the steam deck settings in the video. Would be awesome if it returned on more video's
This video took a lot of work. I'm super impressed. Amazing work.
Totally agree that motion blur should be available on consoles! Let’s make sure they know it’s wanted
Motion blur should have a toggle, the animations look absolutely fluid with it on, i dunno why they INSIST on not including it on the console versions.
I thought all console games have motion blur and pc games give the option to turn it off
Because it uses a lot of recources from the GPU and they would have to lower the res, the current gen consoles are starting to show their age, not a surprise they been on the market for a while now.@@coruviel
Hope you guys cover Infinite Wealth as well.
What a boring video that would be and for only around 70k views it would get wouldn’t be worth it for them
5:00 We need that llama as the next DLC character
They might need to work on the animation a bit 😂
Can only be a dream that Namco would do a Ridge Racer now with this much attention to detail and content. Just imagine
Thanks, the upscaling options are truely overwhelming. I just went with DLSS Quality at first but TSR 100% looks superb. Now i just need HDR settings
Aside from the high priced dlc content I can't get enough of this game .
Haven't seen any $20 skins yet.
Looks good on xbsx
Thank you so much for the input lag measurement~!!!
20:27 one hell of a PECKed game
When John was showing Jin's model at 3:40 there was a second where I thought John's old desk setup was the actual background render in the game.
Let me just say, its so cool to see a game that just gives you all the options for resolution scaling. This deserves a big shoutout i.m.o.
Great review and it was nice to feel that you really understand the nuances of fighting games. Super impressed. Great review for great game. Looking forward to playing!!!
plays amazing, streamed it for 10 hrs yesterday
latency test is so great for these type of games really enjoyed this deep dive
So glad you advised on TSR! You guys deliver every time.
Was so hyped for this game..and reading this video title is so satisfying!
This game is so great, have already played it over 10 hours since releae, I highly suggest you buy it.
I played this on my series x day one for hours and I was just amazed at the visuals! I know my xbox was working overtime cause that air coming off the top was hot hot! 🔥
Even that’s Series S version is step down from Big Consoles it’s still absolutely gorgeous compared the street fighter 6 port
Im playing it on 50 4K TV with HDR and it’s looks stunning , even with lover textures quality
I agree. I'm using HDMI 2.1 on my G2 OLED and Tekken looks way sharper than SF6 and a lot of other games on Series S.
Was not expecting the 7 to 8 comparison to be that big of a difference
i only played the demo but that ran quite well on Steam Deck, its way more optimized than im used to for new games
Awesome vid, John, thank you for that. Wanted info on upscaling prefernces and got it. And having Noodalls do the latency comparison - perfect!
Loving the steam deck recommendation segment hope you include the steam deck more going forward.
Thanks guys
Can you share your other settings that you have with TSR? Like what do you have for background effect, etc.
@@b-41subject57 I have a gsync monitor which I why I have vsync off
For me vsync off and everything else is set to ultra with 100 resolution scale.
Yo, what's going on with the gamma levels in that footage of the Windows version? It's completely blown out.
HDR capture
Love the inclusion of steam deck analysis and settings!
Yeah sounds like AMD driver issues
John is such a badass editor and reviewer really love that he gives so much background content and credit to art direction and gameplay.
Great job with the analysis and video!, however the proposed steamdeck configurations do not work well on the LCD version.
5:00- llama tryin’ to get his screen time
Great to see Series X getting what looks to be the best console version. Tekken 7 got absolutely shafted on Xbox One.
Ahhh yes glad the smallest console base even within its own family of consoles has a zoomed in resolution benefit of 100-200p at best, really makes up for the shafting.
Yet has all the games you ponie warriors wanna play 😂😂😂@spenny2cents
It's the same dude with the PS5 version.
Whatever very slight difference exists in dynamic resolution won't be noticeable for 99% of the gamers.
John mentions that.
Forgot The muscle physics its insane when character do heavy moves or powercrash or electric they're body change veins pop out muscle tightening up skin colour change
So there is no option to disable TAA? Very disappointing.
i Think that fight from the reveal trailer might look a bit more dramatic in the story mode. also, as soon as i saw the amount of upscaling options, i knew df would have a blast analysing all of them😭😭
Impressive the Deck can even hit 60 in this game at all.
I can't wait to get this game for m6 Xbox Series S
I am glad that John pointed out the loading time improvement, since it matters a lot for a game like this. Also for racing game like GT, I remembered I just can't put up with the long loading time for GT sport on ps4
