      @@HorsePowerObsessed I have a ZR2, love it, but am thinking about going back to Z71, or better yet to the new Canyon AT4. Reason -- payload and towing is just too small on ZR2 for my taste. Otherwise its an amazing truck.

    I got a 2019 in July and have about 6000 miles on it. I love it. I got it loaded except for the light bar. I’m putting a rooftop tent on the back . If you are into negotiating which I am you can get them for the same price as the ZR1’s.
    I’ve taken off road a bunch of times but on real hardcore stuff twice. It handles really well.
    It’s one of the few things that I love.
    I love America, my kids, my truck, my dog and my mom in that order. Pretty much everything else can eat a turd. O.K. my dog will eat turds but I don’t really want to talk about that right now. What I’m trying to say is that I really love my ZR2.

    I too wish the zz1 had that sporty hood as well, dont know why they couldn't have put that in it either.
    However the price difference simply is too large for me to afford, had to refinance my house and I'm hoping next week can put in an order, I'm sick of my chevy cruze as much as it's been a super great dependable car not one problem not once did I have to take it in, but it's showing it's years not visually but it's just missing so much modern features I do enjoy in my wife's Malibu.
    I'm seeing a lot more midsize trucks out there and see a ton of full sized trucks collecting dust in dealerships lately.

    I own a ZR2 and the only thing I can complain about it the tow rating. If they could just nudge it up to 6k and push the payload up 2-300lbs it would make a world of difference, but at 5k and 1100lbs a lot of stuff I'd love to tow is just out of my range.

    Definitely love the look of the ZR2. I bought the very first year the ZR2 was built and this year model shows how far they have come! However, I recommend that you buy this truck used because there is WAY TOO MUCH MARK UP! This is not a $47,000 dollar truck! So buy it used in a few years when you can get it for about $20-25k with relatively low miles.

    I think if you intend to use the truck as a truck primarily, then the Z71 is a better move. Like you, I too couldn't stomach the lower towing capacity of the ZR2. And the price too... Even with my employee discount, the ZR2 is still about 6-7k more expensive. I'm building my Z71 into an overlander and I'll still come out cheaper than the ZR2. The only thing I'm missing is the front diff lock. But I'm glad the ZR2 exists though, they are quite capable on the trails.
    Oh, in case anyone is wondering, the wireless charging spot is cool, but it barely fits my iPhone XR (case off, of course). I have to place it in at an angle. My phone is plugged in via Carplay 98% of the time so I dont really use it, but its cool to have for passengers.

    Great vid and opinions as always.
    Maybe its just me, and if you are loaded and love off-roading ten hey? Why not? But to me? All heavy, hard core off roading is going to be hard on the truck and beat the hell out of it. With that said, and a realistic expectation, why would anyone buy a 45k truck and up just do damage it and beat the thing to a pulp?
    IMHO, I would buy a jeep, or beater truck then put in the necessary upgrades to off road with and wouldnt have to worry abut expensive damage. PLUS, I would have a better off road capable truck AT a fraction of the cost!!!
    My 93 Jeep Wrangler with a simple 3.5'" lift with 33" tires could far outperform my 2022 ZR2 in any and all off roading adventures and it costs less than half the price.
    IDK guys.. seems every1 today wants it all. The luxury and the grime together. WHO the fkk wants leather seats and beautiful interior to go mud splashing with?
    I know Im a bit nuts, but I truly find most the population batsh*t crazy or at the least, unrealistic, unreasonable, and just plain contradictory.
    But have fun. To each their own and we all reap what we sow. If you got 55k to spend on a truck to slide off a hill with? Then power to you.

      Honestly the transmission problem is blown out of proportion by the people that have the problem, right now it seems to be effecting less than 5% of people with the 8 speed, but the only people talking about it are that 5%. GM has also worked with the customers until the issue was resolved in almost every case with the exception of a few crappy dealerships.

    It seems that you are knit-picking pretty minor differences between the ZR2 and your Z71, for the most part. It's likely that you can upgrade your truck with GM off-road accessories, new tires, leather seat covers, painting the interior trim black, and upgrading the electrical system for a light bar. You get to keep your 5,000lb towing capacity and still save thousands of dollars. A taller lift kit is an option, as well. I think that you are breaking the cardinal rule of car buying. Don't fall in love with the vehicle in order to rationalize spending far too much money. Just my thoughts.

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  4 года назад +2

      Absolutely true. I love what I've done to my truck (Colorado Z71) and I wouldn't trade it for a ZR2 but if you don't have a truck and can swing the extra money the ZR2 is worth it.

    • @campbelloffroad3660
      @campbelloffroad3660 4 года назад +1

      I have owned many lifted trucks in the past and I can tell you for sure that no aftermarket lift kit can match the ride quality and performance off-roading that the chevy engineers put together for this truck. Also almost all of GM performance suspension accessories are for the ZR2 and not compatible with non-zr2 models. I do however not think the zr2 is worth it for the appearance, if someone want a truck that looks cool to drive around town, by all means just customize a z71.

    I'm renting a Hertz Colorado right now. The first thing is: I can't get in. I'm only 6'+ and I can't get my head under the roof line without contorting my neck 45 degrees sideways. Then my legs don't fit under the wheel very easily. The wheel doesn't rise enough, plus it blocks the top 1" of the speedo and tach at the highest setting. Are they all this way or maybe I am shaped wrong? I fit in an F-16 just fine, my pre-retirement day job, so I can't be that far off normal. It's got 460 miles on it so I'm guessing it's a '20. It has good power and I'm sure it's a base motor. Being a pickup there' s plenty to spin the rear wheels. The engine is definitely the best part. I'm not convinced about the ride. At first I thought it was crazy uncontrolled in the roll axis, and punishing on rough roads (like 2x as hard as my F-Type) but sometimes it seems fine and I've kind of got used to it. The biggest issue to me is the plasticy interior and "good enough" layout, like they half-assed everything from materials to layout to user interfaces. But maybe Hertz got a great deal on rock bottom options.

      Yeah, of course. I was pretty surprised how contorted a fit that truck required between the too low steering wheel on its highest adjustment and the crazy low A pillar. Before I turned it in I also noticed how thin the body panels are, too, as the reflection in the paint would shimy when I closed the door. Knocking on the fenders felt like I could dent them, the steel is so thin. I wasn't impressed. In 40 years of driving I have never owned a GM product and my GM rentals always remind me why. I rent a weekly car for travel almost every week, so I drive a pretty good variety.

      Its not an issue of headroom its just painful to get in and out. I thought my Audi was bad with the B pillar 6" in front of my shoulder as I sit in the car, but the Colorado was worse in the Z axis. Like I siad, maybe its just that my head and legs stick out from my body.

    So why not install DSSV in your Z71? Also, replace Z71 front bumper and hood with ZR2

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  3 года назад +1

      The locking front and rear differentials are the big difference between the 2. Lots of money to get something like that done and those DSSV's aren't cheap either.

    How do you turn on the led sport lights at the top?

    • @HorsePowerObsessed
      @HorsePowerObsessed  4 года назад +1

      There is a switch down where the foglights would normally be for turning on the lights.

    If Chevy ever came to their senses and dropped the 2.7 turbo into this beast, they would destroy everything else in the midsize market! But, alas....😢

      Without a fast engine option this is still considered a mini raptor so with an option that actually made power it would be exactly that!

    Wonder if the bow tie on the grill is removable ?

      It is removable but it leaves a blank space in the shape of the bow tie imprinted on the grill.

    Have a whole new respect for mid sized trucks thanks to the Colorado. Both the Z51 and ZR2 packages are great. That ZR2 us pretty badass. However, for 16k yours would be epic !!! Just saying 🤔 Good job on the review. On your way to 20k bro. 👍😉

      Thanks, JT! You really can't go wrong with either one of these models, with a little bit of work the Z71 is just as good if not better than the ZR2.
