I LOVE robber flies!! What a cool video! I encountered a Beelzebub Bee Eater on my porch last year, it was so huge and fluffy and had the biggest rumbliest buzz ever haha! I have a ton of paper wasps that make nests in my porch and they kept trying to dive bomb it, but it was easily twice their size and it would simply scare them off as soon as it let out that thunderous buzz! It was pretty chill and it let me get some pics (so I could ID it, no idea what it was at first) with my hand right up next to it before I poked it towards a hole in the screen of my porch so it wouldn’t be trapped inside. It gave an angry buzz every time I touched it haha. I’ve always been a big fan of flies but NOTHING compares to the Beelzebub Bee Eater!!
I once had a robber fly ride on my leg as I drove home from work. They just clung on for the whole drive, and didn't even want to leave when I arrived home. Silly freeloader.
The thing is, if the robber fly is really similar to a assassin bug [kissing bugs too, wheel bugs are the biggest type of assassin bug], then don't try to get bitten by any assassin bug, it sometimes carries the parasite "Chagas", and a robber fly could carry other parasites, so if you have the money, you should probably get a parasite blood-test
Just a correction, out of the over 7,000+ species of assassin bugs (Reduviidae), only assassin bugs within the subfamily Triatominae (Kissing bugs) are the only known transmitters of Chagas disease. There’s a little over 140 different species of kissing bugs. The rest of the 6,850 or so assassin bug species are unable to transmit diseases to humans. But as for robber flies, they have never been known to be able to be transmitters of diseases to humans. On a side note, the Wheel Bug (Arilus cristatus) isn’t the largest species of assassin bug. The largest is the Horrid King Assassin Bug (Psytalla horrida). Hope that helped! 😄
These dudes land on me now and then when I'm out for a walk. First time I saw one a few years ago it freaked me out, never having seen one before. Never been bitten by one though, they're always pretty chill when on me.
