I know someone who has a destroyer. He ran it for the first time (on a drag track) a couple days ago (on 06/21/22) at Beach Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, KY. He did what he was supposed to do - he kept it a "break in" RPM's, but that bike is pretty awesome to watch. We'll see it some more in the coming weeks. It's pretty impressive.
ps Hookes Law, those valve springs are distorted only in their elastic range, they will be Ok as long as there is no rust pitting (unlikely) to them. GO FOR IT!.
If the engine was completely sealed off in a showroom environment (which it sounds like it was), then I doubt there is rust. Also, you are correct about spring distortion. They have to be pushed out of their elastic range into their permanent deformation range, which isn't going to happen while sitting- that usually happens when an engine is overclocked. you can always just take the valve covers off and check for damage, rust pitting, and measure the tolerances.

@@bdr7557 I used to think that also, but then I found out first hand that they DO... My drag race big-block has a roller cam with close to .750 lift and valve springs with 850lbs of open pressure. I used to put it away for the winter without touching the valvetrain at all. One year when I pulled the car out of storage for the season, I noticed a head gasket leaking. I pulled the heads off to repair it, and figured I would give them a quick once over as long as they were off the motor. As I was checking the valve springs for tension, I noticed that they were all fairly close except for a few of them that were pretty far out of spec compared to the rest of them, I'm talking like by 50+lbs. I went back and looked at the position of the lifters in the short block as I hadn't rotated it since I removed the heads, and sure enough, every valve spring that was down on pounds lined up with every lifter that was up on the cam lobes. I now pull the rocker arms off when I put the car away for the winter, they are shaft rockers and I can take them on and off without even having to re-lash them. Takes less than 30 minutes to do, and is worth it.

7:36 "haven't actually ridden it, everything I've said about it I've read" really dude.... just frekin ride the thing before comparing it to a space shuttle.
Yup my buddy had 3 at one time and then bought the Bonneville vrod that Harley had and we went to the salt and he was able to set a new record. In the altered engine form the bottom end bearings wouldn’t last more than a few minutes, the crankcase would flex enough that the bearings would self destruct and often spin. After his first pass on the flats the oil looked like gold metalflake paint. Put in the spare engine and pulled tuning out of it to set record.
Yep. High-powered engines with factory crankcases tend to do this. I'm into drag racing Oldsmobiles and with a factory block, every time I would get over 600-650 h.p. out of one, the main bearings would end up wasted in no time. The OEM blocks just weren't strong enough and would flex, pinching the bearings against the crank. I stepped up to an aftermarket 4-bolt block with MUCH beefier main bearing saddles and webs, and a Billet crank, and now I have no more bottom end issues at over 700h.p. and 7000+ RPMs.
Changing valve springs is not a big job and aftermarket springs are available from plenty of cam companies. You just need the seat and open pressures of the stock springs and they can be ordered.

Yeah it should run high 9s. Pretty much any sport bike with a bit of suspension set up or a swing arm is running in the 9s. I’ve seen 600s scraping 9s and 1000s running 8s
With the wheelie bars, the slick tire, and air shifter it should be able to get into the 9’s. Most of that will come from being quick off the line and through the first 1/8th. Would be relatively slow on the big end.
Re: Modern Liter bikes can get into 9's. Maybe so with the right rider, but the average person wont buy a new liter bike and RIP a 9sec pass. I've seen more than a few people brag about what a magazine says their bike can do and be handed an 11 or 12 sec time slip after their trip to a dragstrip.

Surely you could have a local bike mechanic pull the valve covers, pressurize the cylinder to hold the valves, compress and swap those springs so you can at least run a few passes before you swap that engine for a newer one. When you store it in the future, take out the front Plug and check that the engine is sitting in valve overlap before TDCC on the front cylinder..That will take the stress off the valve train..
4:37 good save by the rider on the far lane
ps Hookes Law, those valve springs are distorted only in their elastic range, they will be Ok as long as there is no rust pitting (unlikely) to them.
He sounded like they knew from experience. Personally I’d never heard of such a thing.

I honestly feel like it would be fine. Maybe down a little on power but those valve springs are OK I'm willing to bet. I got the feeling the dealership wanted to make a little dough.
Springs wear from being compressed and released, they wouldn't wear out from just being compressed.
@@bdr7557 especially since those valve springs are the Beehive design made out of titanium built by Terry Vance and Byron Hines who used to work for Russ Collins if you catch my drift
@@bdr7557 Right. Gun forums have endlessly discussed whether storing loaded magazines causes their springs to fail. Engineers and experiences have concluded no weakness and no failures from storing springs compressed. The HD dealer was just spouting HD BS.
@@donniebaker5984 Being a beehive design or beimg made out of Titanium has nothing to do with storing them under compression.

Bikes and Beards, I absolutely, love love love your videos!!!
My 2nd bike was a Vrod I had until last year. Man, that thing was fast. It wasn’t conducive for my riding in the hills and hollers, so I sold it.
Why not, doesn't handle well?

And something you missed knowing/saying about the Destroyers is, there was a Destroyers only class in an all Harleys Drag racing series back then
(I rode a mid-7 second Methanol Turbo HD that was only 103CID at those events) and one of the strictest rules in the Destroyer Class was you weren't
allowed to modify the engine "to make more power" E.g. they always had a dyno at those events to check/confirm your Destroyer wasn't making more power...

Should preference it as, fast for a Harley. Liter bikes and bikes like Hayabusa and Ninja zx12 run 9-10 second and they're street legal with all the extra weight of lights, gauges and fairings. And they don't need wheelie bars to do it.

I will be surprised if you see a 9 second run on that bike. They are fast, but I'm not so sure the average "destroyer" will do 9's. Good luck ! Have fun !
Most of the modern litter sport bikes can get into 9's.

Am I the only one who laughed when the dude said they can get 200 horse and 200 ft/lbs out of an M8 with a cam change?
He was so full of shit, the Stage IV's from Harley for the M8's push 141 HP and about 140 ft-lbs and they are not a "simple cam change" whole new head and pistons crying out loud. Also, I don't believe him on the valve springs. I own 2012 V-Rod anniversary edition and had a destroyer. They don't just "self-destruct." and if it were the case, getting the valve covers off on these V-Rods is a 1-2 hour job and people like Fitzgerald motorsports machine their own parts to rebuild the destroyer, same with Vreeland's.
@@Joes432 hell, check out shadetree surgeons channel where they dyno the 131 M8. Just like Shaun said, makes around 130 HP. Ive only seen one harley make over 200. And the motor had so much work in it there was no harley parts left in it

Surely you could have a local bike mechanic pull the valve covers, pressurize the cylinder to hold the valves, compress and swap those springs so you can at least run a few passes before you swap that engine for a newer one. Or you could just sell that mint engine for more than the bike most likely, and use some of that cash to modernize that awesome frame.
