Thanks Steve, this video is right on time for me. I have the x370 Taichi after buildzoid recommended it, so it is compatible with the updated BIOS to support 3rd gen. Since you can't reflash the BIOS and it doesn't feature dual BIOS, it seems like a risky upgrade. Based on these results, I think I'll just stick with this for now but when to upgrade is the question. The main thing I'm looking forward to is the 'halo' card from AMD, and if it's completely bottlenecked by the CPU, I guess that'll be the time for an upgrade. Hopefully first gen AM5 isn't plagued by as many issues and comes out swinging.

pls dont spread false information that 1700 can be easly overclocked to 3.9 and more, seen more than few of them that cant even hit 3.7 without voltage bump - every youtuber trying to say that you just have to enter bios and set multiplier to 37 when most of 1700 are not good enought to be overclocked past 3.8 - this behaviour creates a lot of misunderstanding.

When Zen first launched... I looked at it like.. "Well, its not bad, its good enough for good competition". And it was certainly hell of an increase over bulldozer. It couldn't beat intel from my impressions but it was certainly worth considering if at least to go back to the brand that I loved so much in the past. I still held off and clung to my 2600K as my gamer as then Zen+ launched, and then Zen2. Threadripper on zen and zen+ never interested me in the slightest, and I was doing workloads where I would really need it. As I had an old used dual socket 6 core westmere workstation I was using for that stuff as I got busy with my work already since about the time I bought my 2600K. Then when I saw Zen2 delidded and space for that extra chiplet... I gasped... And waited... Zen2's numbers were fantastic, and truly competitive both in performance and price, and then the 3950X launched and I finally opened my wallet and came back home to AMD after a very long absence... And hopefully wont be looking back for a long time to come. No regrets.
A friend of mine hung onto his 1100T hex core and replaced it with a ryzen 1700 shortly after its launch, and has been on AMD since his very first computer.. A 386 DX40. He has never once had an Intel. And this video today will be aimed squarely at him. He several times was forced to cling to a machine far longer than was ideal in anticipation of AMD coming out with a winner. And several times he didn't regret those choices, with the Athlon 550, the Athlon 64, and any time AMD was able to leap over everyone else.... And then his 1700. It has made him a very proud fanboy.

Here in the UK I was looking at 2nd hand parts, needed to drop my FX8350, was looking at a Ryzen 1700 but even 2nd hand it was around £200 where I got a brand new 3600 for £155. In production it seems the performance is close and in games the 3600 is better, so either way buying new seemed like a win/win to me.
On the other hand the way I see it recommending graphics cards ATM is a nightmare with rumors suggesting AMD and Nvidia about see a big performance leap and new consoles coming out so it's hard to tell what spec changes we'll see in games in the coming years. I'll chime in with a mini-review of the R7 1700 from a consumers POV.
I picked up a Ryzen 7 1700 at the end of March '17 for about $400 AUD ($305 USD at the time). For me, it was a no-brainer; the i7-7700K was faster in games, but the R7 1700 performed more like one of Intel's Broadwell-E HEDT processors in production tasks while being less expensive than an i7-7700K. For reference, I was upgrading from an i7-3770.
My personal rig does a lot of stuff - gaming, streaming, code compilation, video rendering, virtualisation, etc., and the balance of performance and price offered by the Ryzen 7 1700 made it the clear pick of what was available at the time. Intel's higher performance in games hasn't been a draw for me as I'm still using an R9 290X 4GB GPU at 1080p/75Hz, so the bottleneck is pretty much always on the GPU when gaming (outside of select titles). I've got mine overclocked to 3.8 GHz at 1.285V (SET) and it chugs along quite nicely. I play and stream games like World of Warcraft, CoD: Modern Warfare, Satisfactory, and the combination of R7 1700 and R9 290X serves me very well.
So that's the good, what about the bad? Well, I picked the ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO as my board of choice - the only options available to me at the time were the C6H, MSI's X370 Xpower Gaming Titanium (which Buildzoid and many others rightfully called out as not being very good), ASRock's X370 Taichi, and Gigabyte's AX370 Gaming K7. Having to take the plunge on a flagship motherboard hurt a bit, but none of the other X370 or B350 boards had become available at the time, and I knew AM4 was a brand new platform meaning the flagship boards would get the best support (in theory).
The board itself has been great - I'm running BIOS 6401 (AGESA PinnaclePi 1.0.0.6) as I haven't needed to upgrade to support Zen 2. What hasn't been so great is memory support. 1st gen Ryzen is a picky, picky architecture. My kit of Corsair Vengeance LPX (CMK16GX4M2B3200C16) is rated for 3200 C16, but it uses Hynix AFR ICs and my early production run CPU _hates_ the stuff. I had it running at 2666 AUTO for the better part of three years simply because I couldn't be bothered testing and retesting to try and find a stable set of timings. More recently I used the DRAM calculator to try 3200 C16 (crashes in Windows) and 2933 C14 (seemed to work for a while but I started getting hard crashes), so I'm back to 2666 at 14-16-16-36-54-1T (I haven't adjusted timings since backing off from 2933 to 2666).
My particular unit is also vulnerable to the old "kill Ryzen" Linux compilation bug that causes segmentation faults when executing certain instructions, given it was manufactured very early on in 2017, so that's not so great.
All in all though, I'm very pleased with my purchase. The march of progress means that at best I'm looking at Ryzen 3 3100 or Ryzen 3 3300X performance in games (if I were to upgrade my GPU), but gaming is just one part of what I do. I'm in two minds about upgrading to a Ryzen 9 3900X when Ryzen 4000 comes out, or just waiting for DDR5, but it's nice to have options.

Whilst the RAM issues seem to have improved over time, it s still tricky I d say. Couldn t pretend that I tried anything crazy or extra fancy and didn t rly understand how to use the Dram Calculator program coz by the time it was out, I was already done and it didn t seem worth the hassle. I originally bought the LPX 2666mhz kit coz it was on Asus QVL and I already knew that RAM could be tricky. Tested it on 4 Ryzen PCs: Asus B350-F, X370 Crosshair 6, B350-Plus and MSI B350 Carbon Pro...on all Asus boards, it only was stable with a slight voltage adjustment (1.225+ and it becomes stable, at the indicated 1.2v no way). On MSI s board: no issue at all...
As I tested it with 2 Ryzen 1600 and Ryzen 1700&1700x with purchase dates 1 year apart, I have the suspicion that it s not so much down to Ryzen but more down to Asus boards hating Hynix RAM which is mostly used for LPX kits. Did some research and found out that kits with E-die seem to be the best bet (2nd to Samsung s B-die which are costly and nowadays hardly available). No issues getting the system stable at 2933Mhz with: GSkill Aegis 3000mhz, Ripjaws V 3200Mhz and 32GB kits Crucial Ballistix Sport.3200Mhz on all boards...in case of the Crucial kits I can tell that it s E-die (AES in the product code means E-die).
In case of the Asus boards: on all of these kits, I was also able to drop the RAM voltage from 1.3v standard spec to 1.225V+ with it being still stable...I found that quite a coincidence that on Asus boards 1.225 seems to be a magic number, running them at 1.25v now...simply coz I ve seen that there s no stability difference and performance was also the same so I thought lower voltage is always better (which might be wrong...). I ran the Ryzen 1700&1700x on 3200mhz for a while and the system felt snappier but hey 2933Mhz is rock solid and the differences in benchmarks were tiny.
Anyway, I wouldn t waste any money to go from 2666 to 2933 but if you can get a deal or maybe wanna upgrade to a 32GB kit, I strongly recommend Crucial Ballistix Sport with AES in the product name, they re also commonly affordable (2933Mhz basically guaranteed...many many others pushed those kits a lot further using Dram Calculator or more elaborate manual settings).

They just had to get greedy...so even though I could shell out extra for a cheap B550, I'm now going to hold out until I get close to 100%/2x performance differential (in single core). Thanks for the Ryzen 1700 2020 update Steve. I think you absolutely gave solid advice recommending the 1700 over the 1800x back in 2017. And you also gave solid advice recommending the 7700k/8700k over the first gen Ryzen parts, if one was exclusively gaming as well. The 7700k and 8700k have aged incredibly well.
But I think most first gen Ryzen owners can upgrade to an 3700x if coming from an 1700/1700x/1800x and most 1600 owners can likewise upgrade to an 3600 or 3700x for a large performance uplift. But it is a shame that 300 chipset AM4 owners won't be getting Ryzen 4000 support, I really do think an upgrade to 4000 from 1000 would be an even more substantial upgrade over 3000 series.
But 3000 series is still a very large upgrade over 1000 series, and is absolutely an viable upgrade path for more gaming and productivity performance. My advice would be that if anyone on 1st gen Ryzen who wants to upgrade to 3000 series, and doesn't want to upgrade the entire platform to 4000 series, just wait for 4000 launch and pick up an 3000 CPU for an much cheaper price compared to current pricing.
Thanks for the update Steve, very informative and highly enjoyable.

Nah, when the Ryzen 1700 came out, it was the better choice, even for gaming. The 7700k does not hold up well in many games, which use more than 4 cores and it will get worse in the future, especially with the new consoles, using much more powerful high core count CPUs. The 8700k changed things up a bit, but it also came at a significant price premium! The best choice was probably getting a Ryzen 1600 for gaming.

    • @joeyvdm1
      @joeyvdm1 4 года назад

@@MHWUU The 7700k beats the 1700 in every game benchmark of Gamer Nexus in this video of Gamers Nexus we just watched dude, and every video of Hardware Unboxed. Not one website or youtube channel has ever recommended the 1700 or 1800x over an 7700k or 8700k for gaming, not one.
Maybe in the future the 1700/1800x might do better, but right now both the 7700k and 3300x give the 1700 a hiding in gaming bud. No doubt about it. If you payed attention to these benchmarks you would see clearly that. And an overclocked 7700k with 3600mhz or faster RAM pulls ahead even further.
I don't know what benchmarks you were looking at, but you are believing pure fantasy if you think the 1700 beats the 7700k in any current game.
And that includes the 1600 as well. The 1600 was the better buy over an i5 7600k, but not better than the 7700k. The 1600 and 1700 might do better in the future when games actually require 6 cores or more as standard, but right now (and since the 7700k release), the 7700k is by far the better gaming CPU compared to the 1700 and 1600.
Whoever bought an 7700k 3 years ago, has had by far the better gaming experience right up till now. And the 7700k most likely has another year (maybe 2 at most) of decent gaming performance.
The 1700 and 1600 have been slower at gaming this entire time and they are still slower, and they already bottleneck top of the line GPUs at lower resolutions. The 1700 and 1600 will both have to be upgraded to keep up with next gen consoles. They have cores, but they have very low IPC, only 3rd gen Ryzen has 7700k IPC matching levels. I know, I own an 3700x. But Intel also has the Ringbus architecture, and that is fantastic for gaming.
And the 7700k will have also to be upgraded to keep up with next gen consoles as well soon-ish, same with the 3300x, but the 7700k has given the better gaming experience over its 4-5 year life span compared to the 1600 and 1700/1800x. So the 7700k was the better buy for pure gaming, no doubt about it.
I am not an fanboy of wither company dude, I just call it like it is. And first gen Ryzen is not the best for gaming.

      @MHWUU 4 года назад

@@joeyvdm1 One example where the 1800x, which is pretty much an overclocked 1700, beats the 7700k: www.computerbase.de/2017-03/amd-ryzen-1800x-1700x-1700-test/4/#diagramm-battlefield-1-dx11-multiplayer-fps . This was already at launch. Right now the sweet spot is 6 cores although a 4 core cpu with hyperthreading holds up well mostly. You might argue the 7700k was a better choice if you have a high refresh rate monitor, else it simply does not matter if you have 100 or 120 FPS. Also most tests run with a 2080 TI at low resolution to show differences which are completly meaningless. So the much more interessting question to me is, which CPU will age better and therefor I clearly choose 8 instead of 4 cores.

@@MHWUU Here look at these Digital Foundry benchmarks.
      ruclips.net/video/ffKHk-M_8eY/видео.html
You can see in those benchmarks in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance benchmark that not even an 3700x can actually stay above 60 FPS at all. I am not talking about an 2 second FPS drop. I mean constant under 60 FPS.
And if you watch the entire benchmark you will see that with an 2080ti and in the most demanding games that 3rd gen Ryzen stutters and drop FPS quite badly.
An 1700 is even worse. So to be covered by the best GPUs and have an constant 60 FPS in every game, it is still only Intel that delivers. The 7700k once overclocked can do this, barley.
So it is not only high refresh rate gaming. But yes, I think most people won't be pairing an 2080ti with an 1700/1800x. But I am just talking about an pure top of the line gaming CPU, and the 7700k was that at the time, and still does the job once overclocked and paired with fast RAM.
And your benchmark was one game that the 7700k lost in, and it was barley anything in that loss, it lost by 2fps, that is a joke dude, and the 7700k was not overclocked. When the 1700/1800x loses they lose big time, and even 3rd gen cant stay above 60 FPS at all times, as proven by Digital Foundry. And the 1800x is much slower than 3rd gen.
That is all down to Ryzen CCX layout and much lower IPC first gen. And Battlefield multplayer is well known to love cores, but it barely beat and stocked clocked 7700k.

If you have a "lower end gaming cpu" you might as well make the gpu the limiting factor and crank all the settings that way the difference between a 1700 and a 10600k or a 3700x become smaller and smaller
