Back in a day I had X6 1045T. Phenomenal CPU. It was a powerhouse for video render and thanks to high 3 core turbo it was also very good CPU for gaming. It stay cool under 60 C, using normal tower air cooler.
The FX series so bad that the SKU numbering of from Phenom II and Ryzen is actually continuation of each other. The last Phenom II CPU = Phenom II 1100T The lowest SKU number for Ryzen = Ryzen 3 1200
the FX series is what made me to go Ivy Bridge. When from a Phenom II 955 to a 3770K. Didn't get a new CPU for 5 years until the 1950X for multimedia purposes.
The largest compatibility issue is usually not SSSE3, but rather SSE4.1. Because of this, you can run many modern games on much slower Core 2 Duos and Quads while the faster Phenoms can't.
yeah, same experience with the 64 bit version of War Thunder on my old 1055t. Couldn't launch it because of SSE 4.1, after resurching a few forum threads.

There shouldn't be any application that runs faster on some AMD pre-Ryzen (apart from ln2 OC'd "construction vehicles" maybe) through sheer IPC increases and non-shared FPU alone, unless that is a severely memory- or thermal-throttled non-SMT variant. What is your setup if you don't mind me asking.
Unless I'm mistaken, 1090T or whichever Phenom was last before Bulldozer should have a place in history though as the last Flagship X86 CPU designed by hand. FX was when AMD joined Intel in using automated transistor layout.
@@tomstech4390 i had a 1055t, bought in 2010 for 230 bucks, it was locked, but the board i had was a good bus clocker, so it still pulled from 2.80 > 3.85 ghz on all cores lol
I have an FX 8350 overclocked to 4.4 that gets a multi thread score of 695 in Cinebench R15(105 single thread). My R7 1700 got 1400 multi thread at base clock 3 ghz and the ram running at 2133(a 3000 CL15 kit). I think single core was 130. Simply turning on the ram's XMP profile increased the single thread score to 148. I tested clear up to a 3.9 all core overclock(not entirely stable) and got a little over 1700 multi thread and 160 single thread. Backing it off to 3.8 gets a little under 1700 multi thread and 156 single thread.
1700's what i'll aim for in 2030 lol when the boards are obsolete discontinued and the cpus used and the rams old.. i'll get a ryzen system for under 100$ gogo time and used market lol
Data backup? hmmm… If you get some low power board with a ~15W TDP CPU and configure the HDDs to idle spin time, that board will probably pay itself on energy savings in 1-2 years…
I just retired my 1090t in June 2020 - it's responsible for data backup too (particularly due to the fact i still have a few functioning PATA drives) and the wife's drawing applications - have now moved to a Ryzen 3600x - very happy I held out and waited - in the end had a frankenstein of a cooling system with the 1090t overclocked to a 4.2 (4.6 was achieved but found better to overclock htt and cpu/nb - only discovered that in the last year and a half) overclocking each by about 400-600mhz showed amazing improvements in games & other applications - just frankensteined a lot of cooling with absurd voltages but it stretched out the 10 years like a champ and was nice to essentially jump to double the thread count xD
I hope these videos are leading up to a revisit of the Nehalem/Westmere i7s, or even the 6-core Xeon X5650s. And maybe even a follow-up on the 2500K and 2600K, which have been legendary CPUs for so long. Then we could have a comparison between Sandy Bridge 4C4T and Westmere 6C12T, and see if 4T really doesn't cut it anymore! I love content on old CPUs and GPUs.
@@markwhatever256 same x58 was my first pc. I'd still be using it but I stumbled upon a steal of an x79 deal so I sidegraded to that and sold my x58 mobo and cpu. I used to have it with the i7 980x.
Back in December I finally upgraded my 1090T to a 3500x because the game Rust quit working on the Phenom after an update. What a difference! 1090T was a good boy for 10 years and has endured many 3D/2D design jobs, it has now taken a new life as an office machine with all its well deserved respect. Loved your homage to this excellent CPU.
My old 1090T is still being used everyday. My wife uses it as an office pc and it does everything she wants it to do and the kids watch youtube on it ;-)
16 when I built my first PC back in '96. I remember being impressed by the Pentium 4...which wasn't hard to do after the Pentium II and III. If Intel tried to make a cartridge CPU today you can bet someone would do an SNES PC mod with it.
The 1090T was way ahead of its time. After more than 12 years I'm still running this superb cpu paired with Asus Crosshair IV Formular. It's had countless upgrades including gfx changes, memory and of course ssd, but the core system is unchanged. Still plays advanced games like Hitman 3 without sweating. I've since bought a faster laptop, but I still use the 1090T as my main setup. I'll be sad to let it go.
As someone who oned one of these chips back in the day (and has a modern Ryzen today), thanks for the video and the nostalgia hit! Interesting to see this venerable chip compared to the modern counterparts. It may have been overshadowed by Intel's Sandy Bridge line, which we already know held up better, but thanks for giving us the numbers for the 1090T on the modern tests that could complete on it. Great to have actual numbers for this one.
Used my Phenom II X6 1055T until last year when I finally upgraded to Zen 2. It served me well and didn't skip a beat for a whole decade despite being OC'd +900MHz.
Mine has been sitting in its packaging for years now, and when I finally found time to test it again it seemed to be dead. RIP one of the largest, worst purchasing decisions I made. This video gives some sirt of closure, though.
yup, ran my 940 til the 1600 came out and finally replaced it.. my AM2+ boards VRM's shit the bed years before that so all i had left was an am2 board which the 1090T wouldn't run on but the 940 did so that was what i was left with. served me well but more and more games were having issues with it due the limited instruction sets it supported.
It would be more a reason why intel went from 900 numbered Core-I processors to 2000 numbered after. The numbering now, though unwieldy to say, still makes sense.
I think if they ever get away from the core series then maybe we will see a change. I wish ryzen didn't have a similar thing going on because we're gonna run into the same issue with them coming soon

Cavey Möth Crysis is maybe a bit harder. I’m not sure exactly how it’d do, but I know Crysis is somewhat CPU dependent and single threaded so I’m guessing it’ll have some drops when lot’s of stuff is going on.

Upgraded my brothers PII 1090T to a R5 2600 in early 2019, I'm still rocking my PII 840 on my secondary computer, I'm waiting for my brother to upgrade his 60GB SSD so I can grab that, for my old computer, because loading up Win10 is still a chore on an HDD.

I've got a Phenom X4 9750 and HD 6570 1GB running in my kids playroom, it handles Minecraft on low, Lego Batman1-3, and N64 emulation at 720p 60fps. Going to try and keep it running as long as possible lol

I had the Phenom II Dual Core 550 in 2009, which turned out to be the bargain to end all bargains when I was able to unlock it to a fully functioning Quad Core, which was stable at 3.6Ghz...It easily bought me another 2yrs use out of the 550 before I felt the need to upgrade to a faster CPU in 2014.
This was interesting. I ran a 1055T for 7 years. Still have it, still works, just wasn't doing what I'd needed it to anymore. That chip could hit just under 4GHz. 4GHz itself, crash. 3969MHz, that's fine.

Hey GN Team, I used a Phenom II X6 until I started following your channel this year, which after a short time I changed it all for a R5 3600. Whilst not the only source, you where helpful as a lot of the sources from the 2010 era are different or have moved on. 8-10 years to get that 6 core AMD part again, Phenom II and Sandy/Ivy Bridge users sure got some good value from their systems...
The problem with saying that intel is best for gaming is that you assume everyone has no budget. You get 90 percent the performance of a 10600k with a 3600 at 60 percent of the cost. Put those savings which can be as much as 250 when you consider MB and cooler into a better video card. A 10600k with a 2060 super is about the same price as a 3600 with a 2080 super at the min a 2070 super with some left over for better storage or a better case. The idea intel makes the best gaming computer is only true if money is no concern. Literally 99 percent of the population does not fall into that category. To sum up what I am saying a 1200 dollar PC build for a gaming pc would be faster with a 3600 because you would get a better video card with the money you saved. Hence intel is not the best cpu for gaming always. Only in high end systems running 1080p wanting extreme frames. Otherwise at 144p and 4k the chips hardly pull apart. Really this seems like a no brainer to me.
It's all about priorities. Most people have a car that they have financed or saved up for somehow. A $10,000+ item usually. I simply did without a car since I'd almost never use it anyway even if I had one. On the other hand I'm on my PC 16h a day soo... logic ruled out. One last build in 2021 will prob cost $12k and I'm by no measure rich, I live on welfare and just saved that over 3.5 years instead of giving a few hundred a month to ho's.

It has 24x 12TB hard drives in it (I have 110,000 movies among other things, add about 1-2TB a month to that), as well as an LTO-8 for backup ($3500 by itself). The CPU is just a 24-core TR, and I only need that for the PCI lanes for the SAS cards. Reusing the 1080 ti I got used a couple years ago when everyone else was upgrading to broken 2080 ti's, I simply don't game as much as I used to. Case I built myself for the simple reason there isn't one commercially available that can hold all that, unless it's an ugly server rack that sounds like vacuum cleaner running 24/7. Also has it's own 7.1 800w audio amp in it and 400W worth of RGB (less desk clutter), along with 3x power supplies, (45v for amp, 400W 5v one for RGB, and 1600W atx one). If I was going for pure performance I'd just get a 4-socket server board and put 4x 64-core Epyc's in it and multiple Titans (have 0 need for that much compute power).
Use unraid Build an unraid server. You dont need anything expensive to run it. Also shuck your drives. I spend about 200 on a 12 tb drive. I have about 60 TBs in my unraid server. I have 6 PCs built. You dont need to buy a 12k PC every few years.

Because you are revisiting older CPUs, it would be nice to have a look at the first 6core CPUs from Intel and compare them to the newer CPUs. I still game on an Intel Core i7 980x

I still have a system running with a Xeon W3690, the Xeon equivalent to the i7-990X (including unlocked multi!). A powerhouse still at 4.6 GHz, but I don't use it in my main because of the very high power consumption compared to my 4790 system
Still running an i7 930, it's kind of starting to show its age, mostly on the I/O front it appears (loading times). Got 10 years out of it, so can't really complain, but seeing how it stacks up against newer chips would be interesting (and probably a good motivation to finally upgrade, if these last two revisits are any indication ;))
me too :). Still using the 1090t, and prob upgrading to 5600x or 5900x.. Out in a few weeks now (even though the 5900x cost the double of the 5600x, it also performs the double. no no brainer.. either way, I get waht I pay :) its just a matter of how much I can pay at this time.,.,.
I upgraded from a Phenom II 955 BE last year to a 3600. It’s cool to see these comparisons, gives me some idea of what the numbers mean when I can compare it to my user experience on two systems of similar age.
I just recently dug through my old computer room(own a repair+ business of 29 years), got a wild hair, and built a “retro rig” with an old 1090T; OC’d it to 4ghz(all core static turbo at 4.4v), on an msi 760gm-e51, 8GB 1600mhz crucial ballistix, and an evga gtx 670 blower heavily overclocked @ 122% power limit, +525 memory, +80 core. Bought a cooler master hyper 212 evo RGB black edition to keep that “beast” in the low 20’s max in an open air system. It’s now my favorite computer in my house(and I have 10700K, 6700k, 6600k, 4690k, 8750h, and 9980hk systems currently in use). It makes me nostalgic and re-enjoy all of the old games I played long ago and it runs games like black Mesa and half life 2 at 275+ FPS on 1080P with all maxed settings with zero stutters. They actually look incredible too. I love digging back into heroes 3, age of empires 2(I play DE), halo MCC, all quakes, unreal 2, red faction, all dooms, wolf 3d, kotor 1 and 2, rise of nations, etc x100. I have a rule that older games can only be played on this rig now in my house.. pretty cool rule if you ask me. Love the 1090T. Now I have to figure out what to do with this 2500k in next... 😎
would it make frame times better? sure. would it change the outcome of the results? no. not really worth the headache that it was trying to screw with that stuff.
I still have my 1090T in an old case, 4150Mhz with OC and 2133 in memory back in the day, all with the Hyper 212 cooler... now the cooler is in my ryzen cpu LOL.
I like this kind of video, because it lets you know what level of performance you can expect from older CPUs - in this case Phenom II X6 1090T - in modern applications and games. Also it shows that there is a continued rise in CPU performance over many years - not unexpected, but still good to see in the graphs.
i'm still using a athlon II x3 for a small VM lab at work, because it supports ECC and it's dirt cheap, in fact i've unlocked the cores so it's a 4 core now :D
I recently threw out my X6 1055T (a CFD rig, purchased from Dell of all places). The idle power draw was immense, the RAM has aged poorly, the platform was quite limited for expansion. But at the time it allowed immensely complex CFD models on very cheap hardware and I loved it to bits.
I'm watching this video on a Phenom II 1090T. I just upgraded from a AMD Athlon II X2 250. This is my old second rig. New case, power supply and RAM has this old girl humming. Excuse me, I shall now play Borderlands 2.
The 10 years from 2000 to 2010 was an astronomical leap in performance, 2010 to 2020 not so much. That the 2000 machine is unusable today. A 2010 machine is still usable for many tasks in 2020.

The funny thing is 2020-2025 was predicted as a death date back in the 1990's, yet no one switched to better materials than silicon that whole time (ie gallium nitride, germanium, etc). Like a train wreck in slow motion, no one was worried about it and everyone kicked the can down the road. Well, now it's time to pay the piper, Intel's stock price hit a few weeks ago is just the start, when TSMC also has the same problems and at 5nm+++... in 2025ish the whole semi industry will tank.

@@THEpicND Problem is quantum and x86 are completely incompatible, so we'd have to discard trillions in infrastructure and start from scratch, not to mention quantum requires liquid helium cooling that most people can't afford. At best it will probably be used only in universities and research centers that can afford $10-100M supercomputers (the price of which will only go up, helium is a rare resource only getting rarer unless we start mining it from Jupiter or something).

I just retired my 1090t from the main system. It's going to be put to entertainment PC duty. And you are right about the tuning; I beat your overclock on air. I knew it was the end of the line though.
I still use a Phenom II 955 which is 11 years old ! it will be upgraded soon though but amazed at how it still runs many modern titles well. Phenom were definately good chips!

Hi @Michael Thompson, they handle it fine, resolution very seldom puts more load on the CPU but rather aspect ratio, so if you go from Wide to Ultra Wide for example. If your CPU did 60FPS in a specific game @ 1080p with a GTX 1060, then it will do 60FPS @ 4K with a GTX 1080, but these CPUs performs better on Nvidia in general than Radeon. Furthermore, the amount of polygons sent to the GPU from the CPU @ 1080p (16:9) is the same as @ 3840x2160 (16:9).
Damn, those CPUs were on the Crosshair IV? And the first Ryzen Crosshair is the VI, so for like what, 6(?) years just one board in the Crosshair family. Yeah, FX sucked.
I built a Phenom II 1090T PC in 2010 with 8gb RAM (later that year upgraded to 16gb) and a GTX 470. Over the years I swapped out the GPU to a GTX 580 then a GTX 680 and by 2016 I knew my PC was aging but it still seemed fine. Then my Gigabyte motherboard started having issues reading the BIOS chip randomly, it was time to upgrade. I was super close to buying a FX 8320 or 8350 then the Ryzen launch date was announced and I limped along with my Phenom another six weeks or so. Ryzen launch month I rebuilt PC with a Ryzen 7 1700, 16gb DDR4 2400mhz RAM (later replaced with DDR4 3200mhz). I knew my old PC really was out of date but my rebuilt machine was way snappier, everything loaded faster and it booted fast. Later that year I replaced the GTX 680 with a GTX 1070 and bought a 525gb M.2 SSD as a boot drive I've been pretty happy since. I loved my 1090T but there's no way I'd use it in 2020.
I have Phenom II 1090T overclocked on 3.8 GHz and with all cores working on max frequency at same time without limitation with TurboBoost technology. Max temperature benchmarked with OCCT in same time with AMD RX570 4G (overclocked) is 64 degree celsius. RX570 maximum temperature is on 79 degree. Test duration 1 hour, stable max. temperature. FurMark result is 130 fps average (720p) and 90 fps (1080p). I dont need better computer for games only to see better numbers on paper.
The reason Phenom II held its own against the FX series Bulldozer was because it had better microarchitecture to start with (which I wish AMD kept throughout the Bulldozer age instead of that steaming sh*t, instead revived as Zen microarchitecture in a way). I was glad I kept Phenom II system throughout the FX series age, which I opted to ditch as it was terrible, at least until I got my first generation Ryzen Threadripper CPU which is miles away much better.
I remember watching vids in 2010 of GTA 4 running on the HD 5970 and 1090T , i7 920 GTX 480 , HD 5770 Phenom 1055T. My man those times pimpims...a tear sheds down my cheek :') I know AMD didn't want to have the stigma attatched, but we all know Ryzen is the real spiritual succesor of Phenom, still would've loved to see Phenom III x4 , Phenom III x6 and Phenom III x8 , that would've been so fucking insane...
Steve, forgive me. First of all love your channel..I've been subscribed for awhile, love the content. Here's the deal: I have a R7 3700x, and from looking at your benchmarks, I see the new R5 3600 XT out-performing the 3700x by atleast on average 10 to 20 fps per game featured. My issue is, is that after inquiring search on RUclips, is that no one has really done a review on the R5 3600 XT!! I am blown away by that! THIS is what this current video of the AMD Phenom II 1090T revealed to me...not to ignore your point man, much respect! ;)

I built an 1100T computer in 2010 and finally retired that system last December when Windows 7 reached end of life. While it really started showing it's age in the last few years, I used that processor the longest of all the CPUs I've ever owned. It was a great processor all things considered.
Haven’t touched my Phenom II’s in years, great cpu’s for their time. They’re pretty much useless now for modern gaming and other modern applications. Ps. Anybody remember the times when applications or app’s were just called programs... 😉
"Application" has existed ever since I've been using computers (since 2002). The "app" abbreviation is... not new, but it used to be very rare and now people hardly say anything else. Smartphones suck. They're consistently awful computing experiences and they're so locked down that they barely qualify as a child's toy. You can tell who has informed opinions on tech by their opinions on smartphones.

First of all it's not useless...it can still run many games...and second of all its more than 10 years old....what did you expect?to play 2020 games at 4k 60 fps?
Phenom II X6 1090T 4GHz (OCed 10 years) was a champion but unfortunately it’s multicore potential was unleashed too late, but it still managed all the new games and even some games by using (Intel SDE emulator) that required SSE4.1. I replaced 1090T in 2020 on i9 9900KS and I put 1090T on a shelf it deserves the rest.
I don't know who would have called the 1090T "esteemed". It was just a sad effort from a company completely lost in the woods in both micro-architecture and process technology.
I fell for the AMD marketing shtick of future proofing and how everything will use all the cores very soon. Obviously that was false as hell. So there I was using 6core CPU mostly for gaming. Not one of my brigthest ideas.
I am running to this day a Phenom II 1100T w/6 cores at 3.31ghz got it in 2011. Almost 10 years old and still playing any game I want to play. I have only upgraded the video card once.
I built a 4 core and a 6 core system this year (2023). They are still fabulous chips. DDR3 Ram is so cheap so 16 Gb no problem . Both have a 1Tb SSD - ie no more bottleneck. They run full MS office suite, CS:Go at high settings with a mid range graphics card, media like movies etc.
I loved my Phenom II 965 X4. I still have the system and it still functions as my # three and is used for old games. Like Diablo II Extention and C&C Yuries Revenge.
I ran an 1100t all the way up till Jan 2018, when I jumped to an R5 1600, and now a 3950x. That 1100t got me pretty far and served me well. unfortunately it's so old now I cant think of a single use for it. Talk about getting your monies worth! But it is cool to see how much performance i have actually gained. Great video!

I had an Athlon II x2 250 on a MSI motherboard with a 8GB RAM paired with an ATI Radeon 5770 card. I upgraded to the Phenom II x2 1090T and omg - I was enjoying gaming! I gave this PC to my uncle a few years ago for his office use, and it does everything he wants even today. This was a beast when I used to game.
Oh mt god! I was so hoping you would do a 1090T or 1100T video after I watched the FX video! Thanks for this one. I miss my 965 Black Edition and I always wanted a six core Phenom! By the time I could afford one, they were all gone.
I was on the AM2/3 platform for 12 years. I switched from dual-, quad- to eight-core processors. I had a 4GB DDR2 motherboard for nine years before I switched to a 8GB DDR3 motherboard. I'm now rocking a Ryzen 2700 processor with a 32GB MSI Tomahawk X570 motherboard.
My home server is still running a Phenom II X6 1045T. I looked at the 1090T, but my motherboard originally came out of an old HP Pavilion desktop with a dual core Athlon 2 in it, and the socket was only rated for up to 95 watts TDP. Several years, 16GB RAM upgrade, new case, new power supply, a larger air cooler, a boatload of storage and a Debian install has turned it into a decent little Plex/Nextcloud/Minecraft server for myself, wife and kids.

You should adjust for inflation with modern parts, $300 in 2010 is like $355 today, which puts it closer to a 10700K.
Back in a day I had X6 1045T. Phenomenal CPU. It was a powerhouse for video render and thanks to high 3 core turbo it was also very good CPU for gaming. It stay cool under 60 C, using normal tower air cooler.
Why not include the intel 4000 series in the graphs as well? Not comparable?

the FX series is what made me to go Ivy Bridge. When from a Phenom II 955 to a 3770K. Didn't get a new CPU for 5 years until the 1950X for multimedia purposes.

The largest compatibility issue is usually not SSSE3, but rather SSE4.1. Because of this, you can run many modern games on much slower Core 2 Duos and Quads while the faster Phenoms can't.

Couldn't launch it because of SSE 4.1, after resurching a few forum threads.
Also with sse 4.2, games like apex won't work with c2q

@Jonathan Soko That can't be right. There shouldn't be any application that runs faster on some AMD pre-Ryzen (apart from ln2 OC'd "construction vehicles" maybe) through sheer IPC increases and non-shared FPU alone, unless that is a severely memory- or thermal-throttled non-SMT variant.

Unless I'm mistaken, 1090T or whichever Phenom was last before Bulldozer should have a place in history though as the last Flagship X86 CPU designed by hand. FX was when AMD joined Intel in using automated transistor layout.

The differences between the 8370 and the 1700 really show what a massive improvement the first gen Ryzen 1700 was.
I have an FX 8350 overclocked to 4.4 that gets a multi thread score of 695 in Cinebench R15(105 single thread). My R7 1700 got 1400 multi thread at base clock 3 ghz and the ram running at 2133(a 3000 CL15 kit). I think single core was 130. Simply turning on the ram's XMP profile increased the single thread score to 148. I tested clear up to a 3.9 all core overclock(not entirely stable) and got a little over 1700 multi thread and 160 single thread. Backing it off to 3.8 gets a little under 1700 multi thread and 156 single thread.
There were also 3 CPU gens in-between Piledriver and Zen1 also. So there's that.
1700's what i'll aim for in 2030 lol when the boards are obsolete discontinued and the cpus used and the rams old.. i'll get a ryzen system for under 100$ gogo time and used market lol
my 1100T retired this year from active duty, he is now only responsible for the Data backup. I now use a 3700x .
Same with my 1090T. Was a great cpu, oc'd like a beast and beat the i5 (at the same pricerange) in multicore performance hands down. Rip
Data backup? hmmm… If you get some low power board with a ~15W TDP CPU and configure the HDDs to idle spin time, that board will probably pay itself on energy savings in 1-2 years…
I have an 1100T as well... it's a backup computer and I replaced it with a 3900x earlier this year.
with any luck my 1055T will also retire this year from my workstation to being a minecraft server :P
I just retired my 1090t in June 2020 - it's responsible for data backup too (particularly due to the fact i still have a few functioning PATA drives) and the wife's drawing applications - have now moved to a Ryzen 3600x - very happy I held out and waited - in the end had a frankenstein of a cooling system with the 1090t overclocked to a 4.2 (4.6 was achieved but found better to overclock htt and cpu/nb - only discovered that in the last year and a half) overclocking each by about 400-600mhz showed amazing improvements in games & other applications - just frankensteined a lot of cooling with absurd voltages but it stretched out the 10 years like a champ and was nice to essentially jump to double the thread count xD

And maybe even a follow-up on the 2500K and 2600K, which have been legendary CPUs for so long. Then we could have a comparison between Sandy Bridge 4C4T and Westmere 6C12T, and see if 4T really doesn't cut it anymore!

Back in December I finally upgraded my 1090T to a 3500x because the game Rust quit working on the Phenom after an update. What a difference! 1090T was a good boy for 10 years and has endured many 3D/2D design jobs, it has now taken a new life as an office machine with all its well deserved respect. Loved your homage to this excellent CPU.
My old 1090T is still being used everyday. My wife uses it as an office pc and it does everything she wants it to do and the kids watch youtube on it ;-)

16 when I built my first PC back in '96. I remember being impressed by the Pentium 4...which wasn't hard to do after the Pentium II and III. If Intel tried to make a cartridge CPU today you can bet someone would do an SNES PC mod with it.

2 years ago I upgraded my AMD Phenom II 550 X2 HDZ550WFGIBOX Black Edition to 1090T, went from 2 cores to 6 for 32 € (with shipping)
My phenom 555 black is unlocked to 4 cores running at 3.3 on a small air cooler.
The 1090T was way ahead of its time. After more than 12 years I'm still running this superb cpu paired with Asus Crosshair IV Formular. It's had countless upgrades including gfx changes, memory and of course ssd, but the core system is unchanged. Still plays advanced games like Hitman 3 without sweating. I've since bought a faster laptop, but I still use the 1090T as my main setup. I'll be sad to let it go.

Interesting to see this venerable chip compared to the modern counterparts. It may have been overshadowed by Intel's Sandy Bridge line, which we already know held up better, but thanks for giving us the numbers for the 1090T on the modern tests that could complete on it. Great to have actual numbers for this one.
Used my Phenom II X6 1055T until last year when I finally upgraded to Zen 2.
It served me well and didn't skip a beat for a whole decade despite being OC'd +900MHz.
Mine has been sitting in its packaging for years now, and when I finally found time to test it again it seemed to be dead. RIP one of the largest, worst purchasing decisions I made. This video gives some sirt of closure, though.
yup, ran my 940 til the 1600 came out and finally replaced it.. my AM2+ boards VRM's shit the bed years before that so all i had left was an am2 board which the 1090T wouldn't run on but the 940 did so that was what i was left with. served me well but more and more games were having issues with it due the limited instruction sets it supported.
This benchmark makes an aside pass at why Intel is using “10900”-like nomenclature instead of “1900” or “1090”
It would be more a reason why intel went from 900 numbered Core-I processors to 2000 numbered after. The numbering now, though unwieldy to say, still makes sense.
at a glace I would assume that a 1900 or a 1090 were 10 year old 1st gen intel core i processors.
I think if they ever get away from the core series then maybe we will see a change. I wish ryzen didn't have a similar thing going on because we're gonna run into the same issue with them coming soon
My 10÷ year old Phenom II is still chugging along. My kids use it for school and light gaming.

TBH even dual core phenoms are perfectly useable, provided you have SSD as a system drive and at least 4Gb of RAM.
Soumalya Ghosh His home system is running a FX-8370. He talked about it in a video posted a couple of days ago “AMD’s Future Proof FX-8370”. He mainly plays a lot of RTS games so it’s not as impacted.

Cavey Möth Crysis is maybe a bit harder. I’m not sure exactly how it’d do, but I know Crysis is somewhat CPU dependent and single threaded so I’m guessing it’ll have some drops when lot’s of stuff is going on.

I run a AMD Phenom II X4 965 on my oldest computer still runs great for light tasks.
Upgraded my brothers PII 1090T to a R5 2600 in early 2019, I'm still rocking my PII 840 on my secondary computer, I'm waiting for my brother to upgrade his 60GB SSD so I can grab that, for my old computer, because loading up Win10 is still a chore on an HDD.

I've got a Phenom X4 9750 and HD 6570 1GB running in my kids playroom, it handles Minecraft on low, Lego Batman1-3, and N64 emulation at 720p 60fps. Going to try and keep it running as long as possible lol

I had the Phenom II Dual Core 550 in 2009, which turned out to be the bargain to end all bargains when I was able to unlock it to a fully functioning Quad Core, which was stable at 3.6Ghz...It easily bought me another 2yrs use out of the 550 before I felt the need to upgrade to a faster CPU in 2014.
This was interesting. I ran a 1055T for 7 years. Still have it, still works, just wasn't doing what I'd needed it to anymore. That chip could hit just under 4GHz. 4GHz itself, crash. 3969MHz, that's fine.
Thank you for revisting this CPU again! I just replaced my 1090t a year ago that I bought the day it came out.. held its 4ghz OC throughout its lifetime without degradation

Hey GN Team, I used a Phenom II X6 until I started following your channel this year, which after a short time I changed it all for a R5 3600. Whilst not the only source, you where helpful as a lot of the sources from the 2010 era are different or have moved on.
8-10 years to get that 6 core AMD part again, Phenom II and Sandy/Ivy Bridge users sure got some good value from their systems...

The problem with saying that intel is best for gaming is that you assume everyone has no budget. You get 90 percent the performance of a 10600k with a 3600 at 60 percent of the cost. Put those savings which can be as much as 250 when you consider MB and cooler into a better video card. A 10600k with a 2060 super is about the same price as a 3600 with a 2080 super at the min a 2070 super with some left over for better storage or a better case. The idea intel makes the best gaming computer is only true if money is no concern. Literally 99 percent of the population does not fall into that category. To sum up what I am saying a 1200 dollar PC build for a gaming pc would be faster with a 3600 because you would get a better video card with the money you saved. Hence intel is not the best cpu for gaming always. Only in high end systems running 1080p wanting extreme frames. Otherwise at 144p and 4k the chips hardly pull apart. Really this seems like a no brainer to me.
It's all about priorities. Most people have a car that they have financed or saved up for somehow. A $10,000+ item usually. I simply did without a car since I'd almost never use it anyway even if I had one. On the other hand I'm on my PC 16h a day soo... logic ruled out. One last build in 2021 will prob cost $12k and I'm by no measure rich, I live on welfare and just saved that over 3.5 years instead of giving a few hundred a month to ho's.

It has 24x 12TB hard drives in it (I have 110,000 movies among other things, add about 1-2TB a month to that), as well as an LTO-8 for backup ($3500 by itself). The CPU is just a 24-core TR, and I only need that for the PCI lanes for the SAS cards. Reusing the 1080 ti I got used a couple years ago when everyone else was upgrading to broken 2080 ti's, I simply don't game as much as I used to. Case I built myself for the simple reason there isn't one commercially available that can hold all that, unless it's an ugly server rack that sounds like vacuum cleaner running 24/7. Also has it's own 7.1 800w audio amp in it and 400W worth of RGB (less desk clutter), along with 3x power supplies, (45v for amp, 400W 5v one for RGB, and 1600W atx one). If I was going for pure performance I'd just get a 4-socket server board and put 4x 64-core Epyc's in it and multiple Titans (have 0 need for that much compute power).
Use unraid Build an unraid server. You dont need anything expensive to run it. Also shuck your drives. I spend about 200 on a 12 tb drive. I have about 60 TBs in my unraid server. I have 6 PCs built. You dont need to buy a 12k PC every few years.

That's still a beast of a chip, I had a Dual Processor x58 X5680 setup (Xeon version of i7 980x).

I still have a system running with a Xeon W3690, the Xeon equivalent to the i7-990X (including unlocked multi!). A powerhouse still at 4.6 GHz, but I don't use it in my main because of the very high power consumption compared to my 4790 system
Still running an i7 930, it's kind of starting to show its age, mostly on the I/O front it appears (loading times).
Got 10 years out of it, so can't really complain, but seeing how it stacks up against newer chips would be interesting (and probably a good motivation to finally upgrade, if these last two revisits are any indication ;))
I recently swtiched from 3930k and it was holding its ground quite well at 4.8ghz even on modern titles. BF5 started to show its limits.

I upgraded from a Phenom II 955 BE last year to a 3600. It’s cool to see these comparisons, gives me some idea of what the numbers mean when I can compare it to my user experience on two systems of similar age.
I just recently dug through my old computer room(own a repair+ business of 29 years), got a wild hair, and built a “retro rig” with an old 1090T; OC’d it to 4ghz(all core static turbo at 4.4v), on an msi 760gm-e51, 8GB 1600mhz crucial ballistix, and an evga gtx 670 blower heavily overclocked @ 122% power limit, +525 memory, +80 core. Bought a cooler master hyper 212 evo RGB black edition to keep that “beast” in the low 20’s max in an open air system. It’s now my favorite computer in my house(and I have 10700K, 6700k, 6600k, 4690k, 8750h, and 9980hk systems currently in use). It makes me nostalgic and re-enjoy all of the old games I played long ago and it runs games like black Mesa and half life 2 at 275+ FPS on 1080P with all maxed settings with zero stutters. They actually look incredible too. I love digging back into heroes 3, age of empires 2(I play DE), halo MCC, all quakes, unreal 2, red faction, all dooms, wolf 3d, kotor 1 and 2, rise of nations, etc x100. I have a rule that older games can only be played on this rig now in my house.. pretty cool rule if you ask me. Love the 1090T. Now I have to figure out what to do with this 2500k in next... 😎
You really need to OC the NB of the FX and the Phenom, Frame time gets better with higher NB clock and RAM. Oh, and optimize the sub timing as well.

I still have my 1090T in an old case, 4150Mhz with OC and 2133 in memory back in the day, all with the Hyper 212 cooler... now the cooler is in my ryzen cpu LOL.

This just proves that my purchase of a Ryzen 7 1700X when it came out was the perfect upgrade to my Phenom II 955 BE.
I like this kind of video, because it lets you know what level of performance you can expect from older CPUs - in this case Phenom II X6 1090T - in modern applications and games. Also it shows that there is a continued rise in CPU performance over many years - not unexpected, but still good to see in the graphs.
i'm still using a athlon II x3 for a small VM lab at work, because it supports ECC and it's dirt cheap, in fact i've unlocked the cores so it's a 4 core now :D

I recently threw out my X6 1055T (a CFD rig, purchased from Dell of all places). The idle power draw was immense, the RAM has aged poorly, the platform was quite limited for expansion. But at the time it allowed immensely complex CFD models on very cheap hardware and I loved it to bits.
Yes I'm happy with my Phenom2 945, but to bad it can't run Doom Eternal because of instructions while Doom 2016 was on Ultra settings.

The 10 years from 2000 to 2010 was an astronomical leap in performance, 2010 to 2020 not so much. That the 2000 machine is unusable today. A 2010 machine is still usable for many tasks in 2020.

The funny thing is 2020-2025 was predicted as a death date back in the 1990's, yet no one switched to better materials than silicon that whole time (ie gallium nitride, germanium, etc). Like a train wreck in slow motion, no one was worried about it and everyone kicked the can down the road. Well, now it's time to pay the piper, Intel's stock price hit a few weeks ago is just the start, when TSMC also has the same problems and at 5nm+++... in 2025ish the whole semi industry will tank.

@@THEpicND Problem is quantum and x86 are completely incompatible, so we'd have to discard trillions in infrastructure and start from scratch, not to mention quantum requires liquid helium cooling that most people can't afford. At best it will probably be used only in universities and research centers that can afford $10-100M supercomputers (the price of which will only go up, helium is a rare resource only getting rarer unless we start mining it from Jupiter or something).

I just retired my 1090t from the main system. It's going to be put to entertainment PC duty. And you are right about the tuning; I beat your overclock on air. I knew it was the end of the line though.
My 955 can hold stable 4.2GHz on air, even 4.3 for some bench 😁

I still use a Phenom II 955 which is 11 years old ! it will be upgraded soon though but amazed at how it still runs many modern titles well. Phenom were definately good chips!
Hi GN 🖐😁 just wondering, despite its age, how do the older CPU’s such as those mention Phenom 1090T and FX-8370 handle 1440p or 4K as these generally pit upwards pressure on the GPU? Hi @Michael Thompson, they handle it fine, resolution very seldom puts more load on the CPU but rather aspect ratio, so if you go from Wide to Ultra Wide for example. If your CPU did 60FPS in a specific game @ 1080p with a GTX 1060, then it will do 60FPS @ 4K with a GTX 1080, but these CPUs performs better on Nvidia in general than Radeon. Furthermore, the amount of polygons sent to the GPU from the CPU @ 1080p (16:9) is the same as @ 3840x2160 (16:9).
Ah...brings back memories of my Phenom II X6 1090T OC'ed to 4.1/4.2GHz on an ASUS Crosshair IV Formula... All inside a CM HAF 932 case hahha :)
Damn, those CPUs were on the Crosshair IV? And the first Ryzen Crosshair is the VI, so for like what, 6(?) years just one board in the Crosshair family. Yeah, FX sucked.
I built a Phenom II 1090T PC in 2010 with 8gb RAM (later that year upgraded to 16gb) and a GTX 470. Over the years I swapped out the GPU to a GTX 580 then a GTX 680 and by 2016 I knew my PC was aging but it still seemed fine. Then my Gigabyte motherboard started having issues reading the BIOS chip randomly, it was time to upgrade. I was super close to buying a FX 8320 or 8350 then the Ryzen launch date was announced and I limped along with my Phenom another six weeks or so. Ryzen launch month I rebuilt PC with a Ryzen 7 1700, 16gb DDR4 2400mhz RAM (later replaced with DDR4 3200mhz). I knew my old PC really was out of date but my rebuilt machine was way snappier, everything loaded faster and it booted fast. Later that year I replaced the GTX 680 with a GTX 1070 and bought a 525gb M.2 SSD as a boot drive I've been pretty happy since. I loved my 1090T but there's no way I'd use it in 2020.

I have Phenom II 1090T overclocked on 3.8 GHz and with all cores working on max frequency at same time without limitation with TurboBoost technology. Max temperature benchmarked with OCCT in same time with AMD RX570 4G (overclocked) is 64 degree celsius. RX570 maximum temperature is on 79 degree. Test duration 1 hour, stable max. temperature. FurMark result is 130 fps average (720p) and 90 fps (1080p). I dont need better computer for games only to see better numbers on paper.
The reason Phenom II held its own against the FX series Bulldozer was because it had better microarchitecture to start with (which I wish AMD kept throughout the Bulldozer age instead of that steaming sh*t, instead revived as Zen microarchitecture in a way). I was glad I kept Phenom II system throughout the FX series age, which I opted to ditch as it was terrible, at least until I got my first generation Ryzen Threadripper CPU which is miles away much better.
But i've "heard" that the FXs were designed as server CPUs NOT for desktops?
I remember watching vids in 2010 of GTA 4 running on the HD 5970 and 1090T , i7 920 GTX 480 , HD 5770 Phenom 1055T.

Steve, forgive me. First of all love your channel..I've been subscribed for awhile, love the content. Here's the deal: I have a R7 3700x, and from looking at your benchmarks, I see the new R5 3600 XT out-performing the 3700x by atleast on average 10 to 20 fps per game featured. My issue is, is that after inquiring search on RUclips, is that no one has really done a review on the R5 3600 XT!! I am blown away by that! THIS is what this current video of the AMD Phenom II 1090T revealed to me...not to ignore your point man, much respect! ;)
idc idc 1090T got me laid and paid when Bulldozer came out. everyone wanted my 4.1GHZ 1090T. I sold it for more than it cost me.

I built an 1100T computer in 2010 and finally retired that system last December when Windows 7 reached end of life. While it really started showing it's age in the last few years, I used that processor the longest of all the CPUs I've ever owned. It was a great processor all things considered.
I am still using my brother's 2010 phenom II processor 😂. It's fast, using windows 10 pro with graphic card Gforce gt710. I am not a gamer though.
Haven’t touched my Phenom II’s in years, great cpu’s for their time. They’re pretty much useless now for modern gaming and other modern applications.

"Application" has existed ever since I've been using computers (since 2002). The "app" abbreviation is... not new, but it used to be very rare and now people hardly say anything else.

Phenom II X6 1090T 4GHz (OCed 10 years) was a champion but unfortunately it’s multicore potential was unleashed too late, but it still managed all the new games and even some games by using (Intel SDE emulator) that required SSE4.1. I replaced 1090T in 2020 on i9 9900KS and I put 1090T on a shelf it deserves the rest.
loved my 720BE, really good value at the time. the phenom 1 was ass though, please don’t cover it. it makes bulldozer look good. lol
I don't know who would have called the 1090T "esteemed". It was just a sad effort from a company completely lost in the woods in both micro-architecture and process technology.

I fell for the AMD marketing shtick of future proofing and how everything will use all the cores very soon. Obviously that was false as hell. So there I was using 6core CPU mostly for gaming. Not one of my brigthest ideas.
I do regret not going Intel at that time. More instruction sets, better per core performance... But I didn't know much about computers back then.

I am running to this day a Phenom II 1100T w/6 cores at 3.31ghz got it in 2011. Almost 10 years old and still playing any game I want to play. I have only upgraded the video card once.
I built a 4 core and a 6 core system this year (2023). They are still fabulous chips. DDR3 Ram is so cheap so 16 Gb no problem . Both have a 1Tb SSD - ie no more bottleneck. They run full MS office suite, CS:Go at high settings with a mid range graphics card, media like movies etc.
I loved my Phenom II 965 X4. I still have the system and it still functions as my # three and is used for old games. Like Diablo II Extention and C&C Yuries Revenge.

upgraded from a 1055t to a R7 3700X recently this year. Like night and day!
I ran an 1100t all the way up till Jan 2018, when I jumped to an R5 1600, and now a 3950x. That 1100t got me pretty far and served me well. unfortunately it's so old now I cant think of a single use for it. Talk about getting your monies worth! But it is cool to see how much performance i have actually gained. Great video!

I had an Athlon II x2 250 on a MSI motherboard with a 8GB RAM paired with an ATI Radeon 5770 card. I upgraded to the Phenom II x2 1090T and omg - I was enjoying gaming! I gave this PC to my uncle a few years ago for his office use, and it does everything he wants even today. This was a beast when I used to game.

I was on the AM2/3 platform for 12 years. I switched from dual-, quad- to eight-core processors. I had a 4GB DDR2 motherboard for nine years before I switched to a 8GB DDR3 motherboard. I'm now rocking a Ryzen 2700 processor with a 32GB MSI Tomahawk X570 motherboard.
My home server is still running a Phenom II X6 1045T. I looked at the 1090T, but my motherboard originally came out of an old HP Pavilion desktop with a dual core Athlon 2 in it, and the socket was only rated for up to 95 watts TDP. Several years, 16GB RAM upgrade, new case, new power supply, a larger air cooler, a boatload of storage and a Debian install has turned it into a decent little Plex/Nextcloud/Minecraft server for myself, wife and kids.
