I prefer a camper because you can leave it at the campsite and drive your tow vehicle to other destinations.

We've had both, pros and cons to each. So far we're favoring the van. Towing a camper sucks. The van is really easy to get around in and we have our stuff with us. Plus, we can keep our mountain bikes inside away from thieves.
