It certainly seems to me that he really didn't mean to start the first variation on the reeds like that! It is a superb improvisation nonetheless, and BTW, I've always loved the Rheinberger. It is quite meaty, solid and dramatic. The whole Sonata #8 is one of his best IMHO.

The organ on that picture is definitely not Cologne Cathedral. It shows Marcel Dupre at the console of the Wanamaker organ at Macy's!
I was wondering if anybody else noticed that the pictured is of him seated at the Wanamaker. But I don't think he's playing it.
