    Something I like to tell myself with Nightshift is that as most people are getting up to go trudge to work, I get to go to bed and be all cosy ☺️

  • @AJ-mc6ro
    @AJ-mc6ro Год назад +121

    Coming from the medical side, working night shift also messes with your circadian rhythm which can cause health problems with your heart and brain. Studies have shown that people who worked the majority of their careers (30+ years) on the night shift didn’t live as long as people working day shift 😬 But as a night shift nurse myself, that’s not really going to stop any of us 😂

    • @inyeekaribi4913
      @inyeekaribi4913 Год назад +10

      There has to be a way to mitigate this though. Aside from the fact that some people really just simply prefer the night shift, it is absolutely essential that essential services be available at all hours of the day as emergencies can occur at any time, but how can the negatives associated with it be prevented, especially the early death part? It doesn’t seem very fair.

    • @AJ-mc6ro

      @@inyeekaribi4913 That’s true, and I’m one of those that prefer night shift at this point in my life. Unfortunately, sleep and the brain are something that we don’t fully understand quite yet. The only true preventative way to stop the effects of night shift would be to not do it and have a regular sleep schedule. Of course other factors contribute to a long life such as diet and exercise, etc., but for now- no it’s not fair but someone has to do it.

      Does it still mess with the circadian rhythm if you’re waking at the same hours each night every single day? Cause then isn’t your circadian rhythm staying consistent, just being at a different time than others in your area?
      And the main difference just being the amount of sunlight you get - is that the main issue for the circadian rhythm that you’re talking about?

    • @GraceCreatesLivingSpace
      @GraceCreatesLivingSpace Год назад +2

      My natural circadian rhythm is like swing work, so working a daytime 8-5 has been pretty harmful to my health. I haven’t felt rested for a single day in probably 15 years. I get infections from my weakened immune system. And I have a permanently elevated heart rate. The weekends just aren’t long enough to get caught up and now with a baby it’s impossible. In the first week of my baby’s life I had to go to the ER because the sleep deprivation had my resting heart rate over 110 bpm

    I worked in rotating shift for about 10 years. The first week is always the hardest since you have to wait for your body clock to adjust. It gets easier after that. And because my work is customer facing, I got nothing to do (other than monitoring the services) if there is no customer complaint or request so nights and weekends are the "relaxing" days. I can watch movies or series, play console games, read, nap, etc. But night shifts became really hard as I get older, now I prefer to have proper sleep so I transfer to another job.

  • @rhensb

    The pros and cons are legitimate. I'm a sociable person, and it drains me if I don't interact with others for a week, which is why weekends were my favorite day, because it's a day for me to socialize. But I do love my work and cherish the privilege of WFH. Btw, thank you! You indeed share a night shift life, so relatable~!

    This video is so great. I'm a bartender full time and so I work very weird hours. I have been doing this for about 6 years and my body still hates it.. it is extremely difficult for me to cultivate a routine that prevents depression, especially seasonal depression (never seeing the daylight) and a routine that keeps me from oversleeping. In Canada it's especially difficult because it's so dark and cold the majority of the year and at night it's even worse. Content like this really helps, so thank you!

    I work from home since the pandemic but my hours are 8am-4:30pm .. I couldn’t imagine overnight 😅 I totally understand about lack of social life. I see my boyfriend on the weekends so he’s a majority of my social life. I also have some plans with people the next two weekends so I’ll enjoy that lol 🎉 but yeah, you gotta be intentional with maintaining contact with people. Also, to take care of my physical health i do workout videos from home. In between breaks I workout for 20-30 minutes.. gives me energy!

    I work an hour less than the shift given, but I do agree on the pros and cons. The higher pay is great, but the stress of the job has made me gain so much weight in the three years of doing my job. I dream of the day when I can do WFH instead of an overnight job outdoors, but for now it’s been hard. My sleep cycle’s sucked, and I can’t find a decent balance between college, work, and my social life. I lost two good friends due to work and my mental health as a result, but due to the lack of sleep, I have friends online and abroad now. I wish I could sleep regularly instead of having to mess it up every week. But the semester will be over soon, and I can adjust it to something I like again.

    New sub here and I find your vid so relatable. Though, it was a bit hard for me as a solo mom working the night shift because after work I had to do all the chores and make my 5-year-old prepare for her online class. So basically, I can take a rest after her class at 3:30 PM. sort of 1 hour bonding moment with my kid, and feed her before taking a 2-hour nap, and then will wake up for dinner time with my kid then will do little chores and going bedtime with my kid at night before my shift starts at 2 AM. I can take only complete rest during rest days. Not an easy lifestyle but seeing my kid and knowing that I can provide for her needs without help from anyone feels so rewarding.

    I started working first shift from 0300-0800 but because of the commute I have to wake up at 0100 and leave by 0200. It's hard to get used to, but I am a night owl and have higher productivity at night, and there's less people at work to have to deal with. Because of the nature of my job, I rarely actually speak to someone unless it''s in passing or I have a question and call them. The only downside for me as I'm an introverted person is that it's not work from home. But I do love the job so it's not a hardship for me to get up and do it.

    It is my first time someone posting about a realistic WFH experience. Every other video I have watched, people miraculously seem to have 42 hours a day and doing 100 things within that. But I can see how you manage your work hours and the free time in this video and I am happy I watched it. I WFH as well but I work from 4AM-1PM. I was never someone to wake up earlier than 8AM but after 2-3 weeks I now manage to wake up early and feel less tired. I agree about the cons of WFH when it comes to putting on weight too 😂 I have not checked my weight yet but I guess I weigh over 55Kg now 🥴
    Anyways, thank you for the video and good luck with your work!!

      Hi po! Merry Christmas. Genuine question: how old are you?
      Parang teenager weight pa po 'yan, and I mean no offense sa weight but like ( keyboard spam 'cause I can't seem to explain properly: djbdkf) how'd you land a job and manage your time? Entertain and guide me, please. Merry Christmas!

      @chansmile226 Год назад

      @@jinhitmama1226 Hello! I am sorry for the late replies. I am not a native Tagalog speaker so pardon me for answering the wrong question 🥲
      I am 26 y/o. I used to weigh below 40kg before but after I start working in 2020 I observed my weight increasing drastically. And it is not healthy fat that I am putting up because all we do is sit on a chair for 9 hours for work then eat sleep repeat. I'd like to have a healthy weight managed around 45-50Kg. But that's just my personal preference. As long as you are healthy and your body mass index is healthy I guess it doesn't matter how much your weight is. 😊
      On your question about finding jobs I find all of my job opportunities on LinkedIn. I have set the settings so it will notify me when a job that matches my skills or preferred job roles (management etc) gets posted so I can apply for them as early as possible. Make sure to go through the job advertisement and apply for the ones that ask for the qualifications you already have rather than applying for everything as hit or miss.
      About managing time, I think it differs from person to person and the time they have at hand.
      My first job was a work from office job in a local company. So I had daily commuting to work and I was dead tired when I got home so I sucked at managing time. I really did not have a social life or time for myself. But I think maintaining a planner and prioritizing tasks outside work can take me a long way.
      My current job is giving me more free time as I'm WFH and I don't have to commute. My employer is in Australia so I have to work in Australian time. I work from 4AM-1PM local time and after work I am free to do anything until I sleep. Having too much free time can also be a problem because I tend to procrastinate a lot now. But again, I started the habit of maintaining a to-do list. I give myself a specific time frame to focus on my personal tasks outside job and once I get it done I let myself rest as long as possible.
      I think the key is to not overwhelm yourself with tasks just because you have too much time or stress on the fact that you have too little time to do anything. Just list down your tasks, prioritize them based on the difficulty of the task and time it will take and do them one by one. Giving yourself a break is nothing to be ashamed of. But when you complete a task at hand, it makes the break more deserving.
      These are my two cents on landing a job and managing time. Hope it helped you.
      Merry belated Christmas and a very Happy 2023 to you!!

This was such a poor habit of course so when I retired I tried the 7:30am to 6pm work days and felt so drained. But yes the weekends and holidays were such a treat. I would love to find a legitimate work from home to sustain my income as I get older and have now grandchildren that I can share the wealth with. I do get a military pension and veterans benefits but there is something about and can replace the interaction of people. Humans!

    If you don’t mind me asking what type of work do you do? I’ve been trying to find a home job because I have chronic illness and it’s hard to be active now. So I’m dreading going back to a fast pace job, my body can’t handle that anymore I’m only 28. It sucks but I miss making my own money 😭

      I had this same problem. After my last hospital encounter I had to make a change. I switch from working in a hospital as a Medical Laboratory Technician to a Medical Coder now I get to work from home. way less stressful.

      @@futuristicmoneydiary4736 do you need to go to school for those two? If you do, is it a certificate?

      There's so many remote positions on indeed. Since the pandemic, they're more common than before. Many of the customer service ones are easy to get into. Consider also getting a certificate in a skill such as bookeeping, data entry or tech based. Many of those jobs are also work from home and the certificates take sometimes just a months to complete. I also deal with chronic illness. Gotta think of the future. Maximize the time you are at home right now. Rest.

      For work I'm using laptop and monitor. My monitor is actually a PC, it has built in CPU (like iMac). The brand I'm using is Asus All in One PC :)
