- In this episode I show you how to paint and weather clapboard siding. We test a product from Folk Art called Crackle Medium and we also use some Soft Pastel chalks.
While I am a former railroad enthiast, I am currently attempting building Aurora monster models for my kids, and want to augment. Aged wood is particularly appreciated. And, I may return to railroad models! Really appreciate your videos.
Love it, Your Brilliant. I have never ever seen such a well explained tutorial. You mess everything up so well. Great work. Looks so real. Will be using for my haunted dollhouse 1:12 project.. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much! I'm glad it was helpful. My passion is model railroading and I love sharing with others!
Hi Jason, thank you for sharing your amazing techniques. Would like to see something similar regarding rust weathering. What I also enjoyed is your extremely clear and understandable speech and pronunciation - a rare exception among all tutorials I have watched so far. For someone who's mother tongue isn't English it's a big advantage.
Thank you for watching and thanks for the kind words. Next Monday I will have a new video on rusted corrugated metal. Stay tuned!
"Would have" not "would of"
Thanks! These techniques are very useful for my western town diorama!
Thank you so much for watching!!!
Thank you for sharing your techniques, Jason, and a very interesting experiment. I look forward to seeing your future videos.
Thank you so much!!!
Another well done video, I am learning a lot from these. I’ve hit the bell 🔔 so I don’t miss any new episodes. Thanks...Anthony
Thank you so much!!!
Think it was on RTNT where he gave you a good shout out so I checked you out and can't say enough about how well you present your videos. I subscribed right away so I don't miss a thing. Makes me feel I could possibly pull some of these techniques off.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!!
Hi Jason, Thanks for sharing this technique. Very nice.
Thanks for watching!!!
Glad i found your channel, your techniques are great, thanks for sharing all your knowledge!...Bill
Your welcome. Thanks for watching!!!
This is awesome, thanks for the tips. I am using some of these techniques on a DPM kit that I am working on.
Thanks for sharing all these techniques! Really appreciate it :)
Thanks for watching!!!
Very good video. You take the time to fully explain what you're doing and why and how... keep it up!
I appreciate it! I love sharing my passion for the hobby with others! Thanks for watching!
Interesting techniques!
you are an artist. love your work
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!!
Hi Jason, just refreshing myself on weathering wood. Two & a half years after you made this video. Found it interesting, I'm drinking from a coffee cup like the one you're holding. The Wiley's are still around, but sure miss the HO Scale Customs videos.
Hey Lynn! Yes, sure miss the Wiley’s!
Greats tips! Thanks a lot for sharing!
You are so like me in all the details itis fun to watch.
Thank you!!!
Very nice work, and very helpful.
Most excellent!
this vid is a masterpiece
A 0.0625" to 0.125" inch thick piece of basswood would work as well on the back of it as long as spacing for window frames attachment is allowed for on the back of the exterior sheeting and for the joints between faces of the building.
Great video, good experiment.
Thank you!!!
I think maybe speeding up the drying time (i.e. the hair dryer) is impeding the crackle effect. Have you tried an example letting everything dry naturally to compare the results?
Hope I am doing this right, never posted before. We met at the EXPO for diner, enjoyed meeting you. I like this format of RUclips. Matches your style.
The experiment was interesting but I don’t think the FolkArt product really produced the effect you were looking for of paint breaking down due expansion and contraction. Could be due to having condensed the process by air drying. I think I will try it over a few days and see what happens as I like the concept. Two thumbs up on your videos. Look forward to the next.
Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it!!! You could be right about me drying to much. I'm still going to play around with it and maybe some day if I find a better way to use it , I will make a new video on it. Thanks again for the support!
Brilliant work
Thank you!!!
Thanks for sharing this technique. Now I only have to figure where to get some cheap clapboards in Germany to try it myself.
Your welcome! Thanks for watching. I know Fosscalemodels.com sells clapboard but dont know if they ship to Germany.
@@JasonJensenTrains They do, I already have some of their kits here (yet unassembled), but shipping costs are pretty steep.
Jason,
Would it be better to paint the back side of the structure before installing the 1/8” x 1/8”
Bracing?.
Thank you again for all your great videos.
Bob
If you paint the wall before you glue on the 1/8 bracing it will warp. The bracing must be glued on first.
Awsome!
Thank you so much!!!
Would love to see your techniques of how to make a plastic wall look as good as the wood
Great suggestion, I will do it. Thanks for watching!!!
Really helpful, thank you!
Your welcome and thank you for watching!!!
Just tried this technique and am happy with how it turned out so far. One question, I think I should have not installed my Tichy doors and windows before I painted. Next time I think I will paint them separately and install after I have painted my walls. Wondering how you do your doors and windows on a building project. Getting practice so I can build my C&EI depot. Thanks Jason!
So glad to hear!!! I paint my windows and doors before I glue them to the walls. Thanks for watching and happy modeling!!!
Could you do a video on how to weather over store bought and already assembled plastic buildings...e.g. like Woodlandscenics buildings. Thanks
I will try to do that some time. Thanks for watching!!!
Hey Jason, I'm coming from wargaming and just starting out in more realistic models and your channel is a gold mine!
I have a quick question about the clapboard. I'm planning on some scratch building and not sure what size (in fractions of an inch) I should be using for HO scale. I see stuff from 3/64th to 1/8th of an inch for sale online. I assume this is the size of each "plank" in the clapboard.
Also, I see both plastic and wood clapboard for sale - I think you use wood here but not 100% sure. Any recommendation for one or the other?
Thank you so much Fred!!! The clapboard is 1/16 wide. You can buy full sheets at Northeasternscalwlumber.com
The sheets are 1/16 thick. Make sure you read all the measurements well on the website before ordering. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and happy modeling!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains Thank you. Will be putting down an order from them soon :)
Would I need anything stronger than a hobby knife/box cutter to cut those sheets? Especially cut out spaces for windows?
...and now I'm back to watching your backlog.
Applause!
P.S will you do so cool lighted Signage ? Maybe Neon like or lit lettering of Box Signs. Will keep watching all your videos.
Jason, can the clapboard be raised in the very first step or do you want to do it after painting/weathering like you did? Thanks!
It can be done first. You just have to careful of the wall warping when you stain it.
Jason have you ever done a wooden barn ? I enjoyed watching your shows . Alan
Jason I just subbed to your channel. Awesome stuff. One question about this video. Will this process work on a plastic Walthers house kit ? If not do you have any suggestions? Or maybe a future video?
Thank you so much!!! I dont know if it will work on plastic. I will try to do a video in the future on plastic kits. Thanks for watching!!!
Jason Jensen Trains ok thanks for the reply. I’m in process of watching some of your other amazing work. Keep up the good work 😃
I really appreciate these videos, They are so helpful for those of us still learning. Just curious though, what kind of brushes is used with the pastels for weathering?
I just buy inexpensive brushes from the craft store.
Thank you, I thought that they were specialist weathering brushes with short stiff bristles.
Great video! Quick question, what is your preferred size of clapboard for HO scale? I was looking on sites like northeastern scale lumber and all the clapboard panel stock is just listed in MM/inches rather than scale. I know you could probably use a variety depending on the look you want. But I wanted to know what you think a good size is for HO scale. Thanks again for all your help! Keep up the good work my friend!
Thank you so much!!! I prefer 16th inch clap board.
Jason Jensen Trains Awesome! Thank you again. I got the print catalog from Northeastern scale lumber and the catalog actually has a pretty handy table that for some reason I didn’t see online.

Jason, do you weather first before you glue the walls together?
Thanks.
I do some weathering before I glue them but some after. Especially in corners.
Looks like an old trailer bed
Jason? Do you ever get burned out and not do any art or modeling?
Is the pastel chalk brush something you made, or bought?
I bought it in a variety pack of brushes from Micheal's craft store.
Jason will that work with styrene
I dont know but I'm planning on doing a video soon on making plastic look like wood.
@@JasonJensenTrains awesome will be looking forward to it

Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else needs to find out about how to build a model railroad layout and scenery try Pycanta Model Railroaders Protocol (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my mate got amazing results with it.
Thank you so much for watching, I really appreciate it!!!
