Jason, many thanks in addition to all your other great videos, for creating this one! I've been CardStock modeling for the past few years, but working with plastic models is out of my comfort zone... For me, this video is a game changer to break my own "fear factor"! I have almost 50 plastic HO kits purchased over 25 year ago, still in boxes, from US and Germany, that are begging me to be built for my first train layout since the 1960s. Thanks for your knowledge and inspiration!
Nicely done! I watch your videos and am inspired. 20 year-old kits are coming out of storage boxes and I am starting to build. Really like the fact you do this in a very thrifty way. Great art doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Build on sir!

Awesome work with super detailed realism is what I appreciate about your models and videos. Thank you for the education.
Absolutely incredible! What a great technique for making plastic look like wood. The finished product looks so realistic and authentic! Love the accessories you added. You are a true craftsman in the best sense and an inspiration. Just subscribed to your channel. Thank you!
You made that kit look so good 👍! Very impressive, I've always built 1/35 scale kits, since I started watching your videos I've switched to ho scale.not much cheaper, but sure is a lot of fun!

You mentioned using foam, looking like concrete for the base on this model, do you have a tutorial or vid on this technique? I also have the walthers black steel water tower, do you have a vid on weathering metal? Thanks for your time.......
Beautiful work, and I'm truly amazed at the finish you achieved by hand brushing with craft paint. Will definitely be trying out your techniques. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, on my board & batten sand house, I cut battens off at top and bottom...and bent them where they would have come loose and time and water caused it to move. I also used a course sandpaper, file and zona saw. Your right Jason...it’s possible and cheap 😁
Thank you for this tutorial on how to make plastic look like wood. Question: what hobby mat would you suggest? Also I’m looking for a file kit, any recommendations for that? Or maybe a whole model tool kit you would recommend? Thank you, Dennis
Thank you so much for watching Dennis!!! I bought my mat at Michael’s craft store in the sewing department. Micro Mark has great files! Thanks again for watching and happy modeling Dennis!!!
im so glad to see that someone besides myself only buys fruit snacks just for the boxes, they make the best roofing material hands down, lmao. Very good technique Jason and very well presented. Your how to videos are great and I personally have used evergreen for my wood for years using the same/similar techniques. Thanks again for another helpful video. What would be a good source to buy details? I am looking for a place to buy the overhead door lamp, such as the one in this episode. Thanks!
Thank you so much Allen!!! I get lamps from Tichytraingroup.com other good places for details would be Railroadkits.com Rustyrail.com and Besttrains.com
I also meant to say how strongly I feel that the quality of a lot of the older Walthers kits don't reflect the price they demand today. Your efforts show that with a lot of work, these models can be brought up to represent looks that are comparable to the higher quality craftsmen kits.
Ok, yeah, you're good! This is something I think is important in model railroading. Wood kits are nice, but there are so many plastic models available, need to be able to detail them up to a more realistic wood like appearance. Inspirating video! 👍🏻
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!! I agree, there are LOTS of amazing plastic kits and you can get them for a descent price! Thanks for watching!!!
Building looks awesome. Just one thing. The rolled roofing paper should go under the wood shingles because it would have been put on first. Then the shingles. Still looks very realistic especially for that scale. Since more than half of the wood shingles appear to have been blown off, I hope you have some on the ground around the building. Not a lot being that they were blown off and would most likely would have been a good distance away when they landed and picked up shortly after. But it wouldn't hurt to have a few lying around close by. They too would have been cleaned up quickly but it might just add a little something to your layout. Which by the way is looking amazing. Nicely done.

Hey Jason, I know this is an old video, but can you do more of these kind of video's? Here in Europe we don't have the luxury to buy those wooden kits without going bankrupt on shipping costs :) This technique is a good substitution.
You are awesome Jason! I’m glad you use regular craft paint because it proves that even with cheap paint you can get a realistic look. Love the hinges! I’ve enjoyed watching ALL your videos and some of others so much that I can’t wait until the tire store come out so I just bought the last JJ’s store to make!
Hi Jason I use plastic kits, but watching your channel has prompted me to purchase a range of Decoart Americana craft paints which are a lot less expensive than modelling acrylics such as Vallejo. I notice with this build you use the craft paints, but I am reading on the Internet that craft paint is not suitable for plastics as it is not durable enough. What is your opinion?
That was excellent video Jason. You do great work. Have you done any N-scale modelling? I am curious if the dragging the saw and x-acto blades over the model to simulate wood and brushing paint would scale well?
Thanks for this - I've read about a lot of the techniques used but seeing them put into practice helps an awful lot! One thing - why don't you prime the plastic before painting?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!! You can definitely prime the pieces first if you want to. I just didn't feel it was necessary. It wouldn't to use a primer. Thanks for watching!!!
Glad you found my channel! I have such a passion for this hobby and I love sharing it with others. I am a freelance artist but I dont believe you have to be an artist to be good at this hobby. I think it just takes practice. Thanks for watching David!!!
Hi Jason so I took a look at FOS Models and they are impressive but unfortunately I live in Calgary, Alberta Canada and a lot of these companies won't ship to Canada because the cost is prohibitive. I like the premade model idea but what I do is copy the picture and try to build the item out of foam or wood or cardboard out of scratch a bit more work but just the same lots of fun. Do you know where to find old diecast cars of vehicles can you give me a link and maybe do a links page and video of the companies that you buy your various items from. If you could do this it would give a lot of hits to your channel. Again I really like your builds although they are models and not scratch builds. Blessings P. Randy Bourque
Thanks for watching my video Randy!!! I really appreciate it! Just to let you know Fosscalemodels does ship to Canada. I highly recommend all of there kits. Happy modeling Randy!!!
@@JasonJensenTrains The problem with the shipping is that they charge more for the shipping than the actual model. LOL Lucky you they are in the US. For some reason to ship to Canada is like a second tier country even though we are next door.
Ok, sorry. I think FOS ships to Canada for $18 a flat rate. I applaud you for scratch building. I'm starting to do more of that myself. Happy modeling Randy!!!
Where do you buy the detail items such as the hinges and brooms and the old dolly the barrels, or do you make them all. I always appreciate people who leave a list of where to buy items in their comments so as for new people it gives us a chance to find some of this stuff. Great videos really well done I like that you take time to explain what you are doing not just speed race through the build like some of these people do which I just don't subscribe to and close them down. Blessings P. Randy Bourque
Given how many people still build plastic kits, I’d love to see you do more of these types of videos.

@@JasonJensenTrains ok cool I just ordered the set... saying "great videos" doesn't do your work justice... you are a true master, thank you for sharing your tips and methods... I get great inspiration from you!
Happy modeling Vinny!!!
I just commented and subscribed while watching your "leaf video" ,(the first I ever heard of your channel) and am slowly watching all your stuff. This is the 3rd video of yours that I am watching and am totally blown away by this build ,gotta be the best I`ve seen ,no s@^% !!!!!! The only problem is.....if I keep watching all your vids, I`ll never get anything done on my layout !
Keep up the great work and keep these tutorials comming, absolutely wonderful!

WOW! Thank you so much Paul. Make sure you get some modeling done. Lol. Thanks for watching!!!
Hey Jason, I know this is an old video, but can you do more of these kind of video's? Here in Europe we don't have the luxury to buy those wooden kits without going bankrupt on shipping costs :) This technique is a good substitution.
Thank you so much Mario, I really appreciate it!!! I’ll try to do some more in the future. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so very much, I really appreciate it Judy!!! Happy modeling!!!
Hi Jason
I use plastic kits, but watching your channel has prompted me to purchase a range of Decoart Americana craft paints which are a lot less expensive than modelling acrylics such as Vallejo.
I notice with this build you use the craft paints, but I am reading on the Internet that craft paint is not suitable for plastics as it is not durable enough.
What is your opinion?
Jason would a wash of India ink and alcohol work or just a mix of black paint and water?
Yes , it would work!
That was excellent video Jason. You do great work. Have you done any N-scale modelling? I am curious if the dragging the saw and x-acto blades over the model to simulate wood and brushing paint would scale well?
Thank you so much John!!! I have not tried N scale. Thanks for watching!
Hi Jason. What suggestions do you have to age and weather the built up version of this kit?
Thanks for this - I've read about a lot of the techniques used but seeing them put into practice helps an awful lot! One thing - why don't you prime the plastic before painting?
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!!! You can definitely prime the pieces first if you want to. I just didn't feel it was necessary. It wouldn't to use a primer. Thanks for watching!!!
Thank you very much.
Your welcome and thanks for watching!!!
Thanks teach!
Your welcome Norman!!!
Awesome Jason, just found your channel, as I just got back into the hobby. Just to cool. Are you an artist by trade? God Bless Ya Dave

Thanks for watching my video Randy!!! I really appreciate it! Just to let you know Fosscalemodels does ship to Canada. I highly recommend all of there kits. Happy modeling Randy!!!
For vehicles you may want to check out Walthers.com
@@JasonJensenTrains The problem with the shipping is that they charge more for the shipping than the actual model. LOL Lucky you they are in the US. For some reason to ship to Canada is like a second tier country even though we are next door.
Ok, sorry. I think FOS ships to Canada for $18 a flat rate. I applaud you for scratch building. I'm starting to do more of that myself. Happy modeling Randy!!!
looks amazing....
Blessings
