  • Steeps are a lot of fun and essential to navigating the whole mountain. If you can carve intermediate runs, steep terrain will be easy as long as you have good posture and speed control.
    Snowprofessor gives you some tips on how to ride steep terrain.

    One of the best instructional videos. Been snowboarding for 20 years and this is what I teach to the young ones. Many instructors teach beginner level turns which is fine and good for safety, but you can gain a whole lot of speed and traverse the mountain at the same time which doesn't seem to ever get taught. You can triple or quadruple your ride times at the same riding speeds using this technique. That means less time riding the lift and more time riding the mountain. One of the most important parts of this is learning to glide on the edge of the board and the flat part at the same time. It requires you to go one heel and one toe at the same time. the second part is keeping your board at an angle downhill on every turn to keep your speed up. The only time you slow down is to by riding up hill ever so slightly You want your turns to glide rather than stop your speed. This is the key to it all.. The "instructors" in the below comment section feel they have the right to say which is the "right" way. But don't be fooled, the right way is you in control and comfortable with the right speed and safety to ride anyway you please.

    I like your videos. I am a decent snowboarder with over 15 years of experience and I am entirely self taught. That makes it difficult for me to guide beginners with first steps since I seem to do all the moves on impulse. Now I know how to teach my friends and family how to ditch the skies and start to really have fun, let alone getting my kids on the slopes. Anyway thanks a bunch and keep on riding.

    In the beginning, I was too wimpy to try using s-turns even on the bunny hill. I ended up using the catwalks to be slow enough to start practicing my s-turns. As a result, I had a good number of spills (catching edges), but after 2 solid days strictly on catwalks, I've learned to love them. Now I'm doing S-turns and 360s on steep blues thanks to them.

    i've been going skiing 4 years now, last year on the last 2 days of the week conditions had 95% of the lifts shut, so we swapped our skis for boards and had a private lesson. We're heading again in a weeks time, really want to learn more, its alot more forgiving when you fall, also cosy snowboots ftw!

    Love your videos. I started snowboarding a few years ago but I only ride a couple of times a year b/c I live on the east coast and only enjoy riding on west coast powders and terrain.
    That said, I'd like to get both of your input and ideas on a unique problem I have. Before I can ask you my questions, I need to explain my specific physical limitation that is causing all of my issues.
    I have little flexibility in my right ankle because it is fused. That basically means my ankle can only move a maximum of 5 degrees dorsiflexion to plantarflexion and can't take ANY bend past that without serious damage. So, for snowboarding, I had an Orthotist make me a brace that basically immobilizes my ankle so it doesn't get hurt when I try to carve, hit bumps (small and large), or crash.
    To my surprise, many instructors and friends that snowboard I’ve talked with can’t quite grasp the effects of my ankle fusion. I am naturally a conventional rider but have to go goofy because of the fused ankle. Almost every instructor has told me to try putting my fused ankle in the back rather than leading with this. The biggest issue with this is that I have little to no ability to push down on my toe side or absorb even the smallest of bumps without it throwing me off balance or launching me in the air. The other big problem is, I can’t articulate the board at all with the fused ankle. One example of trying to have my fused ankle in the rear is that when I try to transition from heal to toe, I keep catching an edge and wiping out. I can’t seem to pull my toes up enough while I’m pulling/sliding the rear of the board.
    For this reason, I’ve had to go goofy, where I am able to lean backward to put most of the weight on my rear leg and use my front foot as a rudder. Doing this eliminates catching edges and being thrown by bumps. However, as you guys point out in your video, leaning backward doesn’t allow for quick reaction. For me, I quickly lose speed control after just a couple of turns. My thinking is that the cause is my inability to really cut into the snow with both toes - I have no issues on my heal side.
    I’ve said a lot but probably not enough to completely convey all of the fine details of my issue. With the information provided, do you have any thoughts that might be of help on the steeps? If you happen to have an ankle boot, the kind that immobilizes your ankle after a bad sprain or break, try putting that on and then try your slide example in your video. It should give you some idea of how your movement is limited, including your ability to squat.

    Thanks for another great vid. I think I've been pretty much doing what you describe in this clip, I guess I just need to practice as much as I can on the steepest runs I can find. I always tense up a little bit on the steeper runs if the surface is really compacted or icey which usually results in me catching an edge and hurtling down the slope on my back taking out skiiers like a human bowling ball!

    biggest thing is keeping the lower body relaxed and knees and ankles loose. having your knees flexed with help you have a further range of motion so if you do hit a icy patch you are ready for it. I am an instructor in the midwest and have to deal with ice daily.

    Valid advice and keeping your weight forward is just as important in skiing for maintaining control and controlling speed sitting back on steeps could hurt you whether skiing or snowboarding and I wouldn't really call the slope their on steep.

    I'm not sure about this whole "pivot" thing.... You use so much energy kicking your back leg around. I've taken lesons and am always taught not to kick the back leg, but instead steer from the front. E.g. keep weight forward and shift your body weight onto your edge, thereby digging the edge into the snow and initiating the turn. You can turn just as quick simply by digging your edge in and transferring your weight... the back leg and board will follow the front of the board.

    • @SnowboardABCD
      @SnowboardABCD 7 лет назад +3

      I'm 4 years late but I will still comment.. There are many different techniques, and I bet your local instructor doesn't know all of them. Pivot through the nose is definitely not the most effective technique, but it exists. If the run is really steep and narrow, short turns with counter- rotation is the best way to go. That way you can change your edge like 7 times in 5 seconds. Throw in vertical weight shift and you will be able to do the same even in powder. Also I love to 180, 360 or 540 mogul to mogul, I bet you were not taught to do that too :) Although what you wrote totally makes sense in most situations.

    As a snowboard instructor, this is valid advice in terms of staying safe but shit advice in terms of snowboarding well, take a lesson or learn how to do it properly instead of half assing it

    • @proconsumersafety
      @proconsumersafety 6 лет назад

      I am an instructor as well. I agree. The best tip, take a lesson form a qualified instructor at the resort. This is important so you do not pick up bad habits that are hard to break. So take a lesson even if a review for the next step like steeps, moguls, etc. by taking a lesson will help you advance more quickly.

    I put close to 100% of my weight onto my back foot, and even sometimes behind it when i need to correct for a mistake.
    just beware that you have a lot higher turn radius, u cant stop to save ur life, and speed control is decided by the line u pick b4 u start, so u need to wait for anyone who could possibly get in ur way to get off the slope b4 u head down. Also u need a low stance...
    Ive seen expert snowboarders bounce their way down mogul'd blacks, skipping 3 moguls with unintentional air

      There's always someone slower; there's always someone faster. But the rules are few and simple. When we choose to bomb it, we have to avoid anyone ahead. They're not required to be predictable or give turn signals. We have to allow enough clearance, or we risk hitting them (or wiping out avoiding them). Glad you were both okay.
