Anyone that agrees with the notion that Giannis's muscle gain affected his jumpshot has clearly never lifted weights, or played basketball. The changes to a jumpshot would be minimal, it wouldn't be enough to eliminate the dip, the turn, or the release point. Those are a direct result of coaching, not strength. It doesn't matter if you're 7 ft or 6'5 pure muscle, great technique is great technique. Giannis had good technique, & due to poor coaching, simply lost it.

Actually, you're wrong. Gaining muscle, especially upper body, affects your shooting a great deal. I've been through this as I played basketball at a younger age, and I've also seen friends of mine going though this.

    • @siukong
      @siukong 4 года назад +13

@@axilmar254 It's all about the _relative_ increase in strength. Which will usually be much larger in your examples (kids growing up and gaining muscle as they become an adult, or someone out of shape hitting the gym and putting on a lot of upper body muscle). In those cases it would not be uncommon to literally have a 2-3x increase in strength (ie +100-200%). In the case of an athlete who was already near peak fitness levels the change would be much lower, relatively speaking (maybe in the range of 5-10%?). So your statement is true but will apply much less strongly to professional athletes than to amateurs. Personally I don't believe it was much of a factor for Giannis.

Great breakdown coach. I have a few points to add.
    2020 Jumper:
    1) extreme head tilt back. This is unnecessary with his shot trajectory and height.
    2) strength gain: adding a tremendous amount of muscle to the frame can cause a lot of extra friction in the shoulder. He might not feel the same fluidity with his new body.
    3) sequence. Due to his messed up ball trajectory and lack of dip for sequencing he is jumping before he has elevated the ball into his shot pocket. Coach Mike Dunn is a huge proponent of this key fundamental.
Nobody ever talks about how useful the dip is for initiating the body sequence. It’s key.

The reason he stopped this form is because he stopped shooting altogether his sophomore season as Jason Kidd wanted him to become an aggressive slashing athletic freek which we know him for today. This was further established in his game as Gary Payton became his mentor before his sophomore season and said something like “Giannis can drive and score all the time if he becomes aggressive and strong in the paint.” For those reason I think he lost all focus on shooting and when he finally reached his full potential without a jump shot, he started to relearn but from “pro” coaches who do not know how to help a player build a rhythmic shot and instead made him focus on cookie cutter mechanics that led to him losing his natural shot development and rhythm making his shot stiff, tense, and mechanical.

    • @peterlattos8415

From Mirin Fader’s new book on Giannis (via the Ringer):
“The coaches wanted to tweak Giannis’s shooting form. He was never known as an outside shooter. It wasn’t necessarily discussed as a glaring weakness, as it would be in the coming years, but it just wasn’t something he needed to do much of throughout his youth. He was always so long and so athletic that he could just stretch his legs a couple of steps and be at the rim, so there was never a need to develop a jump shot.
He didn’t shoot poorly from the field as a rookie, by any means. He even looked comfortable letting a 3 or two fly, his footwork and follow-through somewhat fluid. But the coaches continued to work on his form. Oppenheimer spent time helping him release the ball higher. Giannis’s release was low, almost below his eyes and off his shoulder. They worked on his footwork, his base, slowing down the movement of catching the ball, gathering, and shooting.”

3 points I'd like to point out:
    1. His coaches should watch this video.
    2. His coaches should watch the shooting/rhythm of KD/Duncan/Dirk and KG. Tall players with elite shooting.
    3. How Giannis body transformation affected his shooting. A good example would be KD getting a bit buff and stronger core keeping his form natural. While Gianis is gaining muscle all over his body that has affected his shooting form.

I was gonna mention that. through the years he got bigger and stronger which can also alter shot/form. the bulk aids in absorbing physicality in NBA. it's a tradeoff.

Nope. If he's shooting regularly, with consistent form, his body would find ways to adapt the new strength and size to the existing motion patterns. Not to mention the fact that he has a whole fucking shooting staff behind him. Instead, it looks like he took the best parts of his form and replaced them with the worst alternatives possible

Extreme muscle gain in a short period of time would do that. Same thing happened to me, I gained nearly 30 pounds of pure muscle in a 3-6 month period. I can’t even fathom how I used to shoot. I was so frustrated, I just changed my entire shot form. I’m a noticeably worse shooter. I got desperate, and started shooting more like KD, leaning back, and catapulting the ball. It used to be on par with a JJ Redick type shooting motion. I just simply couldn’t shoot like that anymore. And when the game was on the line, and teammates counting on me to make shots, I was less concerned with “fixing” what was natural to me for years, and became complacent with ditching it completely. RIP 2016 Jumper. I think about you everyday still.

i think it's because of his musle mass,he gained a lot of it in a relatively short time. also the worst 3pt shooting centers and powerforwards are generally the bulkier ones.

I think this is a result of how quickly he bulked up to become a better finisher inside the paint. To put it simply, he was getting so much stronger that he unconsciously made his shooting form less efficient to compensate for the increased strength in his arms. That way he wouldnt be overshooting every time.
It was the coaching staff's responsibility to make sure Giannis adjusts his shot form without falling into bad shooting habits but I guess that didnt work out

There is a difference between inward focus of attention (focusing on the shape of your hands, arms, legs; or focusing on your muscles), and outward focus of attention: the basket, the flow, the ball. Outward focus of attention is much better and more natural, but too many coaches, in their desire to analyze good shooting (or a good golf swing or tennis swing, etc.) force athletes to have inward focus of attention, which always brings distraction, and in worst-case scenarios, the yips.
