    1. Don't skim the chapters. Take the time to understand it. If you don't understand the concepts, then you haven't learned anything. When that exam comes up, you'll have a difficult time answering the questions.
2.Teachers test comprehension not vocab or just highlighted concepts. Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of comprehension.
    3. If you get bad grade and say because you weren't born good at it, its because you're not working at it or practicing enough..not because you weren't born good at it. it the time and hard work. Naturally, those two do not guarantee success.
4.Weaker students don't study as much as stronger students. They think they don't have to study as hard because they think they're smart already.

metacognition is a student recognizing how much they know and understand about the topic that is being studied.

The four beliefs that make you stupid (for my chem 101 homies):
    1. Learning is fast
    2. Knowledge is composed of isolated facts
    3. Being good at a subject is a matter of inborn talent
    4. I'm really good at multi-tasking
Metacognition: a student's awareness of their level of understanding of a topic.

Intermittent repetition is the best way for you to retain the information. Continuous study the night before may work to pass the exam the next day, but you will not retain the information. That's why advertisements are so effective, and we remember their commercials. At 2:09 he reinforces this idea. I hope this helps.

A very good video. I truly realized how bad my studying habits are after entering nursing school. I am in the BSN program right now and for the pre classes I took like Anatomy/ physio I never had to read the book. I just paid attention in class and went over slides. Now I am realizing to truly have a great understand of any material especially for nursing school it is important to read everything. It takes me the entire day to get through two chapters.

Anyone can get an A on an exam, we are all capable of doing it, why doesn't every get A's though? Because studying is simply a GRIND, no one wants to spend hours and weeks in advance studying topics, most students get distracted within 5 minutes after opening a book or they cram chapters of material in the last two days. The way to success in school is slow, continuous hours of studying ALL material weeks in advance of the exam date. Doing well is a huge study grind, that's all it is

So I just watched these 5 videos for my Biology 1 Class. This video is helpful and shows how bad my study skills are.. I will attempt to do better now but its just so hard. Some teachers are just out to make life a living hell just because they had teachers that made their life hell in school. It all depends on who you have as a professor..I try to find the best ones that are easy and make it easy to understand.. I feel like sometimes teachers are asking for too much when most of us probably wont see/need the info in life. Well I am going to try these skills and hope to pass atleast with a C+ because I graduate this semester!

Excellent! Well done, a great resource. I'll be promoting these for many of our students. It's so important that we promote some level of metacognition for students, so they realize that studying is much more about quality, not quantity. Two hours studying ineffectively does not equal two hours of effective studying...not even close. Much better to put what we know about learning and psychology to work!

Of all those beliefs that make me stupid, over-confidence in multi-tasking would have to be the biggest for me. I've always had the tendency to get very distracted very easily while trying to get something done, but I refuse to use it as an excuse while studying or learning or anything else. The only thing I'm confident in is that every day I'm getting a little better at fixing that weakness as well as all my other ones. :)

It seems to me that believing one isn't good at a subject ought to be explored; it's complicated, particularly when considering the reasons a student may have for their belief, and the chance that their belief is based on a logical deduction that the subject is arbitrary.

Professor Chew's face actually made me laugh at 1:50 . The simple look of disbelief wasn't only spot-on, but amusing because I'm pretty sure we've all given that same look at someone claiming something similar to the student's own claim.

When I started college last year, I absolutely underestimated how much work it is to teach stuff to yourself, because at school I only had to review my notes one or two days before an exam.
But now I know learning is different from revising...it takes lots of time and maybe also discussion and rethinking.
However, I find that colleges don't reinforce students in understanding concepts, because they have few teachers and use MC exams.

I would like to add 2 tips that are part of the memory on the learning act: The psychologist P. B. Ballard discovered something interesting about the reminiscence phenomenon. He discovered through experimental tests that the human remembers information more efficiently some time after the assimilation of the information. For example, what you are reading here, you might remember 30% of it after you finish reading, however, you might remember 70% of it tomorrow.

What I do is; read the information slowly from a textbook- write the key points/summary in a notebook- do it for the entire textbook- then revise the key points from the notes and never use the textbook again(only for reference). Is this sufficient because I find it works but very time consuming while my lazy friends don't do anything and get 10-20% higher grades than me?

The problem is, even in university there are still the tests prevalent that just check for definitions and how much you memorized of the subject matter. I would prefer the exams to test for comprehension and understanding, but those are more time-consuming to make. That's why they will never outnumber the abovementioned.

I still have on question though:
does listening to music help you focus?
Because it makes sense to me that when listening to music, background noise is reduced, therefore you can focus better on your study material.
But on the other side if you are listening to your favorite music then you will most likely to sing along or humble the beat.
So should you, or should you not listen to music whilst studying?

Listen to classic music. Avoid words with lyrics

You tube is a great source of study music. Baroque music is said to be the most effective for improving concentration. It is pretty simple to search for "Study music" or "Baroque study music" on RUclips.

I listen to classical and chew a certain flavor gum when I'm studying, when i take my test, I chew the same gum... it brings me back to what i studied because my brain relates the flavor with the information.weird. I know.

Yessss classical music is great. I listen to solely piano works, and the compositions by Chopin and Liszt are awesome.

It is sad that a student in high school gets so little preparation for college~ in learning, life in general. We should be asking ourselves why this is!

@anonymous4chantroll Depends on the type of college you go to. None of my college classes have extra credit... Also if you go to a specialized institution chances are you wont end up taking as many classes you don't want to as in high school...

Good afternoon... How would you classify someone who is confident that he studies alot, using several different strategies. I too am confident that I know and understand the work, I have done extra lessons with 3 different tutors which also tell me they can see I understand the work. Although when it comes to test time, my confidence is completely diminished and after the test I feel like I barely made 30%. (I haven't got my mark for the most recent test which I feel went terribly). When I do past tests or test examples I seem to get them right, it is only when I am in the test that it seems the questions given are questions I have never seen before. I have also been to the University Physiologist, which said it was my study method and went on a course showing us different methods which I have also applied, but to no avail. Is there anything different I can do to help me pass my tests?

Going to bed early, is also a good trick, cause the (stress) hormone cortilso in the body has a circardian rythm that starts to get higher at about 2 in the morning and then has a peak at about 8:30 in the morning, making you more awake and able to focs.

I find that putting off studying makes you later on feel more inclined to repeat the process. Therefore, when i need to study, I immediately do it not waiting for an excuse to do it later. Its hard to begin to study, but once you start, you just naturally breeze through it, that's just my experience anyway.
