I asked my instructor if I should focus on one technique and he said: "No, you need to practice everything." So I did 1 day street, 1 day grip 1 day hook 1 day side and 1 day top roll. I came to an armwrestling meeting and was surprise to see that everyone that was struggling against me could now easily beat me. I realized that like you said in the video, if you only practice something 10% you will get only 10% stronger. I wish I had seen this video sooner.
This is definitely true for me, i used to be super strong in hook, but i learned top roll and didn't completely know how, so i lost my hook strength my hook technique, i was always trying to top roll in which i was weak

I admit I'm one of those sitting with phone and wanting to be like John or larratt, like great in every technique 😁 But yeah, I agree that like example even Devon was always bigger hooker than top roller. He eventually grew more ofc. Developing strongest form is also as important being versatile
I prefer the toproll but I also train for hook becouse sometimes I can't toproll my oponent and I drive into a hook,but I concentrate more on toproll.By the way,great video.

This is so helpful! I love press/shoulder roll! I just starting armwrestling at a club. I notice i am really good at press. BUt the guys at the club tell me not to press that its not for beginners. That i should focus on hook drag or toproll. But i loose a lot in those positions. But as soon as i put myself into press /shoulder roll, i have really strong move. Should i listen to the club or just ignore and focus on getting better at press?
Press is strong move but it comes with big risk of injury. Work with weaker armwrestlers with hook-more similar to press and don`t overtrain your press.
My opinion is that just the variety of techniques and moves you have strong is that makes you a complete athlete and also an armwrestler..Armwrestling is a kind of wrestling that you should have your basic movements but also a backup plan wich if you hadnt train it you ll never have it.. You have to adapt to deferent situations.. Also as you said all the great pullers like devon and john use a variety of techniques.

Which part are u disagreeing? Everything is open for discussion. My expirence and knowledge has show that most succesful armwrestlers choose one technique and build around it if you are healthy and have not found any weakneses in your technique I dont see why u should train something else.

what i mean is that every single move have a counter move , there is nothing like perfect top roll or perfect hook , lets take Zhokh for extreme example , he could probably toproll 99,9% of armwrestlers in the world , because of how he is build there is no chance someone is taking his wrist in top roll vs top roll , now take a guy that is nowhere near his toproll strenght but can hit the right angle in the hook and he can beat him ...
I don't know man, I mean at least in calisthenics usually when someone gets advanced enough it seems they tend to excel at either pushing or pulling exercises. But just because they excel at one doesn't mean that they can't be exceptional at the other, and there will be diminishing returns after a certain point with the one you are good at. I for example am better at pulling, I can do one arm pull ups and clean slow muscle ups with a false grip, but I still train pushing exercises to ensure that I still have a better than average performance in those movements, even though my main focus is pulling. But if I focus just on pulling then I will start to get tendonitis and things from not giving those muscles the time to recover. I find that in that recovery time you can train the other, and in fact supersetting pushing and pulling in the same workout i find to be a good way to get 'active recovery' and train both in the same workout. I don't see why this wouldn't also apply to training hook and top roll? I feel like once you're at a certain level relative to the statistical average, then it's almost natural to become exceptional at both - at least, in calisthenics. I see what you mean though, it seems most national level and lower pullers are specialists (take Ethan Fritsche for example, he has an amazing hook but his toproll is not nearly at that level [at least that appeared to be the case in Arm Wars Las Vegas]) but world level pullers seem to tend to be more well rounded.

I train for toproll for like a year but i cannot open any armwrestler fingers in my hometown and because i don't train hook or press at all i basically cannot beat any of them except my friends who only armwrestle for fun. Now i learn to press and hook maybe this technique work's better for me .
i did my fair share of arm wrestling techniques, i got into arm wrestling and learnt most of the style (attack, defensive) and the techniques like hook etc. I think if you train your arms with weights, like hammer curl and bicep curl, pushups. you have a strong base, i dont know what you mean when you say about what day to train something, i just do the movement that i like which happens to be the hook and the toproll, i like both because you cant top roll someone with better toproll, so you can hook. and so and so, and toproll is much easier, you have more control and leverage, where hook is for shorter arms...
Now lot of new guys are training for hook on one day and toproll on other. It`s confusing to them so they stay in middle and on table don`t know what to do.
Cup strength & pronation!!! Post & rise will help but main focus has to be pronation. Open up and drag out as going for a top roll and roll that pronation for all you're worth
I like the top and train it mostly. But I have started to learn a special hook technique that works EXTREMLY well with top roll. But my top roll is still 80% of what I do when training.
One question......when we train our asses of at toproll but someone manages to hook us,then we cannot....like COMPLETELY cannot enter our power strength. So,in those situations,isn't it also advisable to practice hook as a backup plan? Obviously not the main,but in those situation in which if we cannot win in toproll,where we have to step out of our territory?

Great point , John breznk has everything but still his perfect position is the toproll , everyone has a strong spot which he has to discover and then train that until you're confident and strong enough to explore other moves , of course to be experienced you have to train everything but for newbies they should stick with their strongest side.

If I only top rolled but pulled someone who sucked in a hook or was amazing in top roll wouldn’t it make sense to be good in both a hook & toproll? What do you think? I’m in an arm wrestling club and they’re recommending learning how to “toproll” first as it’s safer and lower risk than pressing or hooking. At least until I’ve been pulling for a year to toughen up my tendons.
I agree with you completely, with a few sidepoints. If you are beyond amateur level then I think the split should be about 75%/25%. 75% percent on your strong technique and 25% on the other with a little time on the press. Beginners and Amateur level should be about 90% for primary and 10% dedicated to the other and press. Lower level dont train seriously enough to try and master 2 styles. More success at this level comes from specializing in your strength and becoming as good as you can. The 10% given to the other is to be familiar with those movements and have enough training you can use it when all else fails
I agree with you. We still see guys on top being 100% one technique. I would rather have one strong move than 10 average. Janis would agree with me - his main style is top roll, he is master of every style but he chooses to go to his best move every time.

Im not an arm wrestler. But I've been practicing the various exercises, specific to your sport,to rehab an arm injury. It seems to me, there is enough difference in the anatomy, used between the hook and the toproll movement. To be able to work both without hindering one. Arms are a small muscle group. They don't tax the whole system, just the small muscles used. Do you mean practicing the movement on the table, to perfect a particular technique?
old video but I have a genuine question, my son 9 years old, has actually strong wrist, I can really feel how hard it is to hook him but pronating him in a toproll feels like a knife in butter. He wants to learn armwrestling, should I go with toproll training or hook or both , at such a young age ?
I'm in a dilemma. I have been a toproller for almost 2 years of my armwrestling journey, but when I joined my first tournament (sick that day) I lost to everyone even to my team mates whom I've always beaten. I started focusing on weight training with the best program for me and put armwrestling at the top of my priority. Now, after 2 months of training smart, consistent, with good diet and recovery, my training partners can't touch me when I'm hooking them and i still can toproll them good but my hook was massive. I will keep training the same way but I can see myself having both techniques not knowing what should be my ace yet.. Let me know if anyone have any ideas.
Are hook and cup essentially the same? Ie you cup/pronate your wrist to create the hook? Can't find anything distinguishing the two and I'm learning but I understand you can hook or top roll and the latter is for mechanical advantage on a stronger opponent
i think you should stick to one thing but be okay at the other lets say someones wrist os so strong you cant toproll him so you will go in the hook with him as an other option so you have to be kind of good at the other things because you can use when you need it

I armwrestled a guy way stronger than me and after a few seconds of the match his side pressure was bringing me over a little so my natural instinct was to get my shoulder behind and then I pressed him pretty quickly. Would this be my move to focus on?

Hi. Firstly i wanna thank you for all the info u've put out for us. I live the sport but haven't started yet. Reason being is i have tennis elbow injury in my right elbow. I got it from too much rope pullups i guess. I can't do pullups (a bit painful) with overhand grip but i can do chinups with underhand grip and pullups with neutral grip So my question is, do u think i can get into armwresting under my condition? i would have to disagree, in arm wrestling you should have all the techniques, yes it takes time to strengthen, but if you have a good hook, they can press to counter, most people cant develop one technique strength, if you build good strength. you just have to understand the rest of the techniques, to counter attack obviously in mma you cant try and master all the arts, you have the basics striking, kicking, grappling etc, there are variations. in arm wrestling there a smaller variations, hook, toproll, press, posting etc theres not that many
I`m not saying to do just one. But to have one main technique let`s say hook, but someone beats you in hook then doing some improvements in toproll will benefit you in having upper hand over him. But just look at guys who are at top 90% have one really strong move. They don`t need to have everything when they find weaknesses in their armor then they can improve those weaknesses. I understand what you are saying but most successful armwrestlers have had singe unbeatable move their go to. If new armwrestlers start practicing everything they lose that one strong move and have two or three that are half of that. Having lot of moves in your arsenal will help you when you are in difficult situations but you first need to have that one that is your best. Training hook to good toproller will confuse their body he will not understand what to do on table and will go to place where he feels comfortable no necessarily stronger.
It seems to me that, the huge majority of professional armwrestlers, are using the toproll. I value more the hookers, because the hook needs more strength but the best armwrestlers are those who use both and adjust to any situation.
im 16 and beat my teacher who used to go to the gym using hook. im a noob, and the teacher even seemed like he sort of knew what he was doing too. I guess im an OP natural hooker :p good to know I should just stick with that
I just go sideway, we found out this technique in our club. In another club another guy meant I am DEFINETLY a hooker (comment from very skilled armwrestler). On my first turnament I did just my sideway thing and did very good. I become second in my class (amateur). The guy who beat me was clearly cuping me very well and attacking my bizeps (it hurt a lot after the tournament). I felt the guy was just over all stronger than me. And I have to say if I would go aginst that guy again I would definetly try to toproll him the next time. John Brzenk meant you should train everything. "Eventually you will run into someone, you would have to use another technique" But yeah not everyone is John. So should I just continue with the sidepressure? I mean some people would say it's not really a technique. And in the longrun you get hurt...
My built: I have quite big trizeps and cheast, I m not a particularly good benchpresser though. I don't train though. I just do push ups. I can do many push ups and also one arm push ups (up to 20!). Pull ups I can do about 20 nice one 25-27 ugly form. But I can`t do a one arm pull up, even though I tried a lot to do it!! :-( I m generally athletic and explosive person (->Fast rise of pressure but maybe not the highest peak pressure). And I have small hands :-( Sorry for my long comment!! I would be very thankful if you guy can give me your opinion!!!

Toproll is for guys with strong wrists and forearms. Hook is for guys with solid wrists and stronger biceps.

Its like saying to be good in armwrestling you need a strong wrist, yeah you need hand control but hand control is done through the muscles of the forearm, which strengthens when doing back and bciep exercises. So it’s all conmected and you should focus ln all

Hi. Firstly i wanna thank you for all the info u've put out for us. I live the sport but haven't started yet.
Reason being is i have tennis elbow injury in my right elbow. I got it from too much rope pullups i guess.
I can't do pullups (a bit painful) with overhand grip but i can do chinups with underhand grip and pullups with neutral grip
So my question is, do u think i can get into armwresting under my condition?

You don't train wrist, you stiffen your forearm, statically train your Forearm
Cupping, also train your fingers with a straight pull, either with a pulley system or doing it isometrically with free weights.
I think top roller are weak because in hook we see the raw athlete power❤❤

How to know in which I'm better?
2 option
1- try both movements and see which feels more natural.
2- try armwrestling many people with both styles. See where u have most success.

i would have to disagree, in arm wrestling you should have all the techniques, yes it takes time to strengthen, but if you have a good hook, they can press to counter, most people cant develop one technique strength, if you build good strength. you just have to understand the rest of the techniques, to counter attack
obviously in mma you cant try and master all the arts, you have the basics striking, kicking, grappling etc, there are variations. in arm wrestling there a smaller variations, hook, toproll, press, posting etc theres not that many
I`m not saying to do just one. But to have one main technique let`s say hook, but someone beats you in hook then doing some improvements in toproll will benefit you in having upper hand over him. But just look at guys who are at top 90% have one really strong move. They don`t need to have everything when they find weaknesses in their armor then they can improve those weaknesses. I understand what you are saying but most successful armwrestlers have had singe unbeatable move their go to. If new armwrestlers start practicing everything they lose that one strong move and have two or three that are half of that. Having lot of moves in your arsenal will help you when you are in difficult situations but you first need to have that one that is your best. Training hook to good toproller will confuse their body he will not understand what to do on table and will go to place where he feels comfortable no necessarily stronger.
I see, that's understandable. I think naturally we all have a favorite move.
My advice is to build around your strongest points not other way.

It seems to me that, the huge majority of professional armwrestlers, are using the toproll.
I value more the hookers, because the hook needs more strength but the best armwrestlers are those who use both and adjust to any situation.
im 16 and beat my teacher who used to go to the gym using hook. im a noob, and the teacher even seemed like he sort of knew what he was doing too.
I guess im an OP natural hooker :p good to know I should just stick with that

I just go sideway, we found out this technique in our club. In another club another guy meant I am DEFINETLY a hooker (comment from very skilled armwrestler).
On my first turnament I did just my sideway thing and did very good. I become second in my class (amateur). The guy who beat me was clearly cuping me very well and attacking my bizeps (it hurt a lot after the tournament). I felt the guy was just over all stronger than me. And I have to say if I would go aginst that guy again I would definetly try to toproll him the next time.
John Brzenk meant you should train everything. "Eventually you will run into someone, you would have to use another technique" But yeah not everyone is John.
So should I just continue with the sidepressure? I mean some people would say it's not really a technique. And in the longrun you get hurt...
My built: I have quite big trizeps and cheast, I m not a particularly good benchpresser though. I don't train though. I just do push ups. I can do many push ups and also one arm push ups (up to 20!). Pull ups I can do about 20 nice one 25-27 ugly form. But I can`t do a one arm pull up, even though I tried a lot to do it!! :-(
I m generally athletic and explosive person (->Fast rise of pressure but maybe not the highest peak pressure). And I have small hands :-(
