      Sawmill gravy is aka white gravy or milk gravy. It's pretty simple to make. I use equal parts bacon grease and flour to make a roux, brown it and add appx. 2 cups of milk or half & half. Sometimes, I use evaporated milk, or a combination. Cook until thick, stirring constantly and do not boil. :)

    This is a wonderful way to make cornbread. Make it fried and on the stove top. We love my cornbread cooked in the oven. However, in our part of the country, it's too hot to use our oven in the summertime. This is a great idea. Thank you for this wonderful recipe.

    • @ElainesCountryHome
      @ElainesCountryHome  7 месяцев назад +1

      It's quick and easy when you don't want to make it in the oven. You're right, it doesn't heat up the kitchen like the oven does. I think that's why Granny and my Mom made it this way so often. We didn't have AC when I was growing up, so it would get pretty hot in the summer. Thanks so much for watching!

    Thank you so much for this recipe! As a twenty-something I went to visit my grandmother in Hazard KY and watched her carefully as she made us some cornbread in exactly the way you show here. She would fry bacon in the pan before making the bread so it was doubly delicious. I am so glad that you told me the secret that I neglected to write down - that the both the flower and the corn meal must be self-rising. Also that the better must be the same thickness for pan cakes when you go to fry the bread.
    I have long wished that I had done a better job of writing down her recipe and now I have a chance, 40 years later, to try again.
