Not how Wayne Rooney would’ve liked his first game in charge to go.
The lineup didn’t have us feeling confident, we got out the blocks slowly, and seemed to have lost the momentum we gained before the break.
We created very little but Boro couldn’t take their chances.
Josh Coburn had a handful of chances he failed to convert, including a goal ruled out for offside.
The second half very similar to the first, the odd chance here and there but mostly Middlesbrough.
John Ruddy did his best to deny the Riverside faithful, but they took their late chance.
Morgan Rogers got his foot in before Blues’ number 1 to give Boro the lead towards the end.
A disappointing start to Rooney’s campaign with Blues.
Expected better attacking football after the change in mentality.
It’s his first game though, Hull on Wednesday night next.

I know. Sad that is. Yeah Ruddy’s been one of our best players in all fairness. 36 yet still keeping us in the game. Was probably at fault for the goal but can’t be blamed too much, we weren’t great all round.

Boro fan here. I was surprised by how poor Birmingham were but I'm certain you'll be there abouts come May. Brum fans were fantastic yesterday. On a side note the lad behind you is doing well for himself. All the best for the rest of the season

Thanks for tuning in again, Tony. And yeah, it was disappointing all round today.
Expected the football we’ve been playing these past few games and we came out like how we did against Norwich. Tried to implement too much from the get go.
And like you say, his interview was flat, felt like no acknowledgment towards the fans at the end of the game, hoping it improves against Hull because I was very frustrated yesterday.

It was rubbish football rubbish tactics bad team setup can't pass or keep the ball, can't playout from the back, Rooney has taken a winning side and made them garbage in a week.
Tried to put his style in as soon as he could, hasn’t he? And it’s not worked. Should’ve allowed the team to play how they did against West Brom and Huddersfield, then made changes. Players are simply not going to have enough time to work it out. Disappointing day

Strange team selection for today, I agree. Should’ve played the team how they were used to in the games previous and slowly implemented his own style over time.

Middlesbrough played well to be fair. Should’ve taken their chances though, had a few in the first half.
Defeat was perhaps fair in the end, bitter one to take though

I still believe Rooney’s the right choice. I buy into this new winning mentality because we’ve been very defeatist over the last decade, let’s be honest.
However he got it wrong today. Should’ve let us play how we did against Huddersfield and West Brom, not putting too much emphasis on his own style in game 1.
I agree Hogan and Gardner weren’t ready to start. Like I said, should’ve stuck to what was winning. Really frustrating afternoon, wasn’t what I thought it’d be at all. Fingers crossed Hull at home on Wednesday night is better.

I agree. Rooney will want to play his style of football though. Which is fine but not right now. I’d have let them play how they’d been playing in the last few games, then slowly implement his tactics, and in January can start to recruit his own players.
Should’ve got off to a good attack start today but like you say it was negative. Didn’t feel he really acknowledged us at the end of the game which was disappointing too. Disappointing day all round though

@tommykelsall Idont think Rooney has thought it through if we play to our strengths we will be OK just build the team slowly. The defence has been great, don't get it.
He's been brought in to do something different with the side. If he's going to play the same side and formation as Eustace, then what was the point of replacing him ?
I don't think we'll be seeing that side that beat Huddersfield and Albion, anytime soon.

@@alantovey5454Your original post was spot on mate. Both the players and the fans would have been looking forward to playing exactly the same way as the previous 2 games. Rooney's ego took precedence over the wishes of players and fans alike. All he should have done was stick with the winning team and formation and watch and learn.
As a Boro fan I was shocked at how easy it was to get through your midfield and defence. Your keeper was immense though today. I fear our lack of taking chances will cost us in the end. I do like how Rooney set you up defending corners, leave 3 up field and it pulls more players out, leaving more space for Ruddy to collect almost every time.
The ref, for both sides, I thought was very poor. Not playing advantage when she should, some questionable fouls, and cards. I was right in front when Engel took out your player. It sounded bad, so firstly glad both were ok. He never took his eyes of the ball, but I reckon if VAR was in the Championship then it could have been viewed different. Same with the offsides, very tight. But thats what I like about no VAR, plenty of talking points and decisions go for and against.
Loved the banter between fans during the game, just a shame about the mindless minority towards the end and after. I suppose every club has them.

Blues cant play the way Rooney wants them to our players are not good enough never have been if Rooney persists with it he wo t last long at blues.
