Thing is, at the time they were right. It was weird and felt unnatural. Splitting the controls to move over two hands. It was like trying to a paint a wall while tapdancing
The "problem" with Vagrant Story at the time was that the game is VERY complex for a kid/teen. It also had some uncommon mechanics that unless you were into RPGs you wouldn't be familiar with. Also also, menu-ing galore. It's not a very "active" game. But it's amazing.
Vagrant story launched when ps2 hype was at its highest. I think FFIX also suffered in sales because of it. The graphics of Vagrant story still impress me considering when it was released and the hardware it used.
@13:00 FromSoftware developed Tenchu Z in 2006 for the 360 too! It was a game that felt like it was made on a budget (even back then) but would make a fun modern indie title if it was released today. (@3:09 Seeing that Alien Resurrection FPS controls quote from Gamespot never gets old 😅)
Haha, was not expecting that Busted reference! Great vid! I played the Jumping Flashes (usually you'd get arrested for that) recently and found the games to still be fun and unique takes on first person platforming. Probably helps that they defintively don't overstay their welcome with a fairly svelte combined playtime of around 4 hours.
My brother and I sunk COUNTLESS hours into Driver 2. I loved that game. Rarely wanted to get out of cars though. That game created my initial hatred for tank controls (which Parasite Eve 2 fixed 👍) but it’s a great game. Also Tenchu. Played that game a lot too.
There is absolutely nothing like Vagrant Story. It was never replicated, probably because it was deemed a dinancial failure; but it is uncanny all the same.
I mean ff12 was stated to be a spiritual successor as it has alot of similar themes and gameplay, plus ff12 and the ff tactics games take place in ivalice which is all but confirmed to be the same world as vagrant story in every way but name honestly it's part of why I loved ff12 when it came out when everyone else didn't, because it reminded me heavily of vagrant story which I played as a kid
It was with the follow up Music 2000, that I was able to use the GCon adaptor with the L and R outputs that I was able to copy the music onto a minidisc. I still have them. I don't think I've ever said anything more 90s without mentioning pogs.
some of these games I knew of as a kid, and could never find a copy at my local stores, Tenchu and Vagrant story in particular. Metal Gear Solid was my favorite playstation game, along with FF9, followed by FF7/8(yes im on of the weirdos that loves FF8).
I think C-12: Final Resistance is missing here. I have never completed it, but the dual stick gameplay feels insanely modern. Feels like a modern 3rd person shooter with some quirks. It handles camera and aiming with the right stick better than most PS2 games even. This is huge.
I remember driver being the talk of everyone at school when it came out. Lots of stores sold out of it. Blockbuster too. My friends amd i spend way too many hours playing the survival driving game
That is accurate. And though the software was limited (FL it is not), it was really only limited by one's own creativity. Hell, you could sample CDs in 11, 22 and/or 44 kb!
I liked Urban Chaos a lot on Dreamcast back when it was pretty new. Of course, it might have put me in a more receptive state of mind about it having dowloaded the ISO for free.
I remember reading about the control layout for Alien Resurrection in a review and thinking "that sounds horrible to try and control", now I can't play 1st person games on original hardware because they don't have it haha.
Great picks all around * Yeap, Alien Resurrection deserves to be re-examined. It's amazing. * Oh, Music! I had created a full album that was taking space in the whole memory card. I lost that card, don't remind me! :( * Fact; Galerians was censored in EU, grab yourself an NTSC copy. * YES! King's Field - Now I appreciate you even more! Souls games would not even exist without KF, Miyazaki learned his trade off Naotoshi Zin. And hell yeah, of course it's playable today, I've recently finished the first 3 KF (including Japan''s only). Moody, atmospheric dread like no other.
Driver!!! LMAOOOO i had a ps1 when i was like 7, and loved driver! but i remember getting stuck in that garage too! so i would always just restart the game and run around to steal cars. sooooo glad to know i wasn’t the only one! bc there’s several games where i would get stuck and not know how to proceed, so i just gave up on the game, even up to the ps2. im convinced those couple of games involved the use of R3 or L3 and i was too dumb to know what that was lol.
oh, what about vib ribbon? what an odd game. I feel like someone needs to make a list of ps1/dc/saturn games that fall under the "you're totally unique, I love you" category. maybe put stuff like kula world and roscoe mcqueen in there
music was not europian exclusive.... well actually the us had mtv music maker. it was very very advanced for what it was MM2 for ps2 was hella weak compared to the original which in my opinion is pretty close in terms of features to fruity loops. it was limited in a few ways but it even allowed you to convert audio to midi and store samples on a memory card a friend of mine used it to remix the star wars episode one theme into a techno track. fighter maker was pretty deep as well but not like DAZ or anything
Alien Resurrection. Max Payne was the first dual stick controls game I ever played. I was so mad, screaming and yelling that this game seems so cool but these controls are retarded! It's so funny that early review sites complained about it the same way I did. I can't go back to anything without it. 007 GoldenEye is garbage.
I missed out on ps1 because i bought a computer to play doom. Had money from my time in the navy and spent 3500 bucks, then a few months later it cost 2500 bucks. I was sick. So 30 years later i dont buy computers, or smartphones. They can go fuck themselves. I use a cheap tablet.
Funny to see Computers were the exact same BS in the past. I could only afford my modern gaming computer because the consecutive price of the parts sank from 2200 to 1200 from 2021 to 2022.
The FL Studio analogy for Music is very incorrect. The first Midi Tracker was released in 1989 for Atari St Homecomputers. Music literally came out 1 year AFTER the first edition of FL Studio.... And FL Studio already wasnt the first more acessible DAW/Tracker. Logic's first edition came out for Apple Macs in 1993. It was very outdated in features even for the time. The only thing it had going for it was being on console. Theres alot of similair Windows 95 programs where you can "Make music" but only from a prerecorded library (Dance Ejay came out 1 year before). But just like the PS1 game Music, Dance Ejay for Personal Computer is also low quality shovelware.
Drop some more PS1 games that were ahead of their time below and they could be featured in a follow-up video!
koudelka
Vigilante 8 second offense
Bust a move
Mizzurna Falls ...
Silent Bomber and Ghost in the Shell (made by the Jumping Flash developers)
The person saying alien resurrection controls was terrible is crying right now.
Thing is, at the time they were right. It was weird and felt unnatural. Splitting the controls to move over two hands. It was like trying to a paint a wall while tapdancing
@@MrDalevich Still, Halo wasn't that far apart.
@@CheeseOfMastersthat’s what I was thinking. And technically Goldeneye 007 was the same only with button presses with the right hand.

When you gave me a grapple hook in Tenchu it was on, that game was so great
Alien game looks really cool even today! Reminds me of boomer shooter graphics many indie games use even today!
It got one massive problem sadly: The difficulty is absurdly high.
Urban chaos feels like open world tomb raider in alot of ways
Love your videos keep up the good work.
Thank you so much!
I didn't knew a half of those games that trying to push the ps1 limits.
You're a legend, dude!
Man I played so much Bushido Blade back in the day.
I had Music 2000 on PS1. You could even rip short samples from audio CDs but you better had a few extra memory cards laying around.
If Vagrant Story had voice acting I feel like it would have gone down much better at the time.

Bushido Blade: Wha ah you running?!

Wales mentioned!!! We love any recognition for our tiny lil place
Man, I was hoping to see Tenchu on here. Those controls were a pain to get used to but it was such a an awesome game. Bushido Blade was as well.

Great Stuff, as always!
Future Cop LAPD had the very first multiplayer MOBA mode.
Sentient was an atmospheric first person horror game with many dialogue options.
I remember driver being the talk of everyone at school when it came out. Lots of stores sold out of it. Blockbuster too.

Vagrant Story is one of the best games ever. Story is incredible. And once you start digging into the lore…
I'm pretty sure that Music had a stateside release. It was rebranded MTV Music Generator.
That is accurate. And though the software was limited (FL it is not), it was really only limited by one's own creativity. Hell, you could sample CDs in 11, 22 and/or 44 kb!
We have come a long way since then. From only having a crappy glorified rompler on the PS1 to the DS getting an actual Korg MS-10 simulation.
I liked Urban Chaos a lot on Dreamcast back when it was pretty new. Of course, it might have put me in a more receptive state of mind about it having dowloaded the ISO for free.
Theres a chance the Dreamcast version runs better to be fair
Finally someone else mentioned King's Field!
I stuck through the Driver tutorial and was rewarded with a great game. It's one of the best games on the PS1 in my opinion.
I love your channel ❤
If the ps1 came out a few months earlier, or i waited a few months, i would have saved 3500 1990s dollars and got a playstation.
There was a Driver comic from DC guest starring Black Canary.
Tenchu was the only game on this list that I owned/played. I don’t know how many hours I sank into it, but dang it I did beat it.
A version of Music came out in the US as MTV Music Generator.
Music was after MTV music generator was on the market and it was made in a way that you could make more complex music if you wanted too
I remember reading about the control layout for Alien Resurrection in a review and thinking "that sounds horrible to try and control", now I can't play 1st person games on original hardware because they don't have it haha.

haha I would genuinely, unironically prefer to rewatch Resurrection over AVP2, Alien 3, or Covenant!
Its a bit hard to get ntsc games to work on a pal ps1 still. PS2 can be modded region unlocked by now though
@@eightcoins4401 It was more straightforward for me to just buy NTSC consoles from EU sellers ;)
Music was a straight up copy of the eJay series that had been hugely successful on the pc
Correct me if I'm wrong, I believe Music had many more customization options.
Real daws also existed back then already. Music came out 1 year after the first edition of FL Studio and 5 years after the first Edition of Pro Logic.
Driver 2 was honestly amazing when it came out
Love the Bully OST!
All the PS1 RPGs were ahead of their time
Bushido blade was sooo fun❤❤❤

I laughed so hard reading the Alien Resurrection review XDDDDD
Good !!
Hellish Quart!
Alien Resurrection Movie was rather decent much better the Alien3 and the recent offerings!
I did buy a psp in 2009, memory card was a rip off.
No Soul Reaver? I am mildly disappointed sir!
Tenchu stealth assassin's
How are the first two Tenchu games the best in the series? Seriously, better graphics seem to have made them worse :/

Golden Eye 64 is such an unfortunate game. It came out even before the first Dual Stick controller.
