I lived in upstate NY in an area where cable wasn't available, and CBC was one of the few stations we could pull in with our rooftop antenna. Video Hits was my primary source of new music for years as a kid. Sam Taylor owns a piece of my heart, or a reasonable hand-drawn facsimile.
I loved this show as a teenager. I also liked Good Rockin Tonite and the Kids variety show Switchback. Everything is so nostaligiac. As a Detroiter, I have to thank the CBC executives in Toronto for giving everyone in Michigan something else to look at besides Reagan TV. And believe me, I'm a Patriot. Bravo guys and gals. Please post more golden age 80's tv from CBC.
this was a great show..those days were fun..miss them a lot... samantha was great...whenever i would write to her, she always wrote back, and always took the time to answer any questions i had.. wherever she is, hope she is doing well.
I used to rush home from school to watch this show and record the videos, believing that if I missed it I would never see my favorite videos again. Of course, as a kid in the 80's I couldn't have foreseen You Tube:)
The 80's had many music video programs, and I made every effort to watch them and find out which music was good. Mom wasn't too thrilled with that idea, but that's what moms do.
This was my life as a pre-teen girl. I spent lots of time weekdays and Friday nights watching Video Hits, Good Rockin Tonite,and Toronto Rocks just to see who was popular. I'd see Duran Duran, Platinum Blonde, Parachute Club and lots of good stuff on here. :)
This was the show that I first saw Samantha Fox "Touch Me" video. The next day at my high school during first period history class a fellow classmate stood up and asked "Who watched Video Hits yesterday?" To which all the guys in the class responded "SAMANTHA FOX!!!" Funny how things jog your memory.
I met her a few times. She let me meet Madonna's publicist Liz Rosenberg. Samantha was a very nice lady and I appreciate her kindness towards me. I hope she is well these days.
"Bross" and "Basha". "Samantha" Taylor loved to introduce the final video of the day, then play only two seconds of it before the show went off the air. I was late for work waiting for 'til tuesday's "Love in a Vacuum", which I saw all 3 seconds of. Thanks "Sam".
Video Hits also used to run for an hour every Friday and it always kicked off with their "Vintage Video",which was usually just 3-4 years old at the most.
such a different time . . . I remember this being one of the ONLY ways I could watch videos when I was 7 or 8 . . . . now you can see any video for almost any song you want at any time - which is good and bad
Samantha is still alive and i've seen her a few times already in 2013. MuscleJ's random 'go check the newspapers' and other vague sources to support his claim are all false. Samantha is healthier than ever and doing great.
I wrote to her inviting her to go to EXPO '86 with me, but she wrote back saying that she couldn't make it. I still have the post card lying around somewhere!
not only did this show introduce a lot of people to these songs without having cable tv, but it also introduced a lot of songs that other stations didn't touch...now, does anyone remember a band called The Works?...they had a song called Dancing on a Wing...post it if you do...
Wow! Samantha Taylor was, and still is, my idol. I would love to know what she's doing these days? I'd love for her to be my music journalism role model. :D
I remember a show called "Hot!" with Claud Mann and then a show with Jay Gold and Shirley McQueen, plus a show that had a Jonathan guy with weird hair broadcasting from the old Queen Street Record Peddler.
Yes she is of Ukrainian background and I used to watch her show every day when I was in senior elementary school. I would rush home fast as soon as classes ended
Did you see the Rick Mercer Report last week? It was a rerun, yet he gave a brief mention of the "late 80's hipstress" Samantha Taylor. If you don't believe she's dead, JUST CHECK WITH THE CBC.
@MuscleJacker can you please post the link to ANYTHING that says she's dead. Because I can't find any mention of it anywhere except HERE from your comment. Because if this was true I'm sure there would be an article somewhere and I would be interested in reading it. Thank you.
@landrykkb I grew up, here, in the Detroit Area, w/ no cable, lol. Had to tune into CBET-9, in Windsor, to get my video fix! The picture wasn't always crystal clear, but it was better than nothing! :)
There was even a companion "Video Hits" book, about only fifty pages long with screen saves from all the best videos of the mid-eighties. Two downsides of this pamphlet-disguised-as-a-book were the gaps of empty space left on every page reserved for your "notes", plus a horrific photo inside of "Samantha" (not her real name) herself, with mascara a la Divine in "Pink Flamingos". Quite a freakish woman ("Samantha") if you ask me.
Her real name was "Myroslava Lastivka Lydia Luciw", not "Jadwiga" as the uploader is saying. So if he got her real name wrong, the "tragic house fire" story is probably wrong as well.
Shame really, the station in Windsor certainly could've benefited from stereo broadcasting had they let it. I think they had to wait until they went digital before that became a reality.
Try again. I went to high school with her and I have five yearbooks with her mug in it. In every one she is Jadwiga Zakrzewski however in three of these yearbooks she signed her name as Jade Zakrzewski. She appears in the gymnastics club photo and the girls' track team as Jade Zakrzewski however.
It wasn't her fault. It was the producer Sandra Faire's dippy cardboard script. Jade would often tell me that she felt stilted reading from such amateur copy. Jade was certain Sandra wrote it on the drive to the studio.
@lcole1926 I read your name as Icicle--so sorry. It was an honest mistake. Jadwiga did die in a tragic house fire, and CBC even have a plaque dedicated to her in their downtown studio.
I always hated these "suddenly, interrupted" openings. The worst were when "Samantha" would be caught on camera mid-sip from a mug. She twice mispronounced artists' names on air, *specifically* when she was giving the audience a pronunciation lesson. Cases in point: about the (then trio) Bros, she said that they pronounced their name "broze" and about Polish singer Basia, she said her name was pronounced "bassy-ah". Thank God she didn't try Basia's surname.
Everyone reading 'MuscleJacker's' comments should disregard them. I am one of Samantha's daughters, and I find it very disrespectful that this man is making false claims about my mother.
i honestly dont know if you are being truthful...but if you are *and I dont mean to be disrespectful if it comes across that way then Im sorry* but I hope your mother is doing well.
Well, Wolffen51 I honestly don't know if you're being a troll! Yr asinine _"i honestly don't know if you are being truthful"_ comment to poor Sam Taylor's daughter for rightfully saying that MuscleJacker is a liar totally contradicts your own comment to him elsewhere where you say he was lying about Sam Taylor dying in a house fire! So why do you imply her daughter is not being truthful for saying the same thing? You are a self-contradicting, passive-aggressive turd

Oh...My...GOD!!! Boy this takes me back. Used to LOVE this show!
this was a great show..those days were fun..miss them a lot...

Wow, I haven't seen this in years. Thanks for posting!
This is priceless. Those graphics were ahead of their time.
Holy smokes, this takes me back, Wow. Thanks for posting.
This was the show that I first saw Samantha Fox "Touch Me" video. The next day at my high school during first period history class a fellow classmate stood up and asked "Who watched Video Hits yesterday?" To which all the guys in the class responded "SAMANTHA FOX!!!"
Funny how things jog your memory.
Wow! "...see Honeymoon Suite at Expo '86. But right now, here's El DeBarge."
That's the MOST 80s thing I've heard all day!
I met her a few times. She let me meet Madonna's publicist Liz Rosenberg.
Samantha was a very nice lady and I appreciate her kindness towards me. I hope she is well these days.
OMG..memories of afterschools in the 80's all begin here.
OMG!! I got my first taste of music videos from this show!! Thanks for uploading it!!
Video Hits also used to run for an hour every Friday and it always kicked off with their "Vintage Video",which was usually just 3-4 years old at the most.
Does anybody remember when there was a video show on CBC called Coming Attractions before Video Hits came into existence?
Wow. That was a serious wave of nostalgia right there. Damn near knocked me unconscious.
(but wow, were the video graphics really that bad!?!)
Oh my god! Video Hits!! I forgot about this show.
such a different time . .
Samantha is healthier than ever and doing great.
holy shit! this is where i first saw new edition
I wrote to her inviting her to go to EXPO '86 with me, but she wrote back saying that she couldn't make it. I still have the post card lying around somewhere!

Oh, Thank you !!!!
I won a Simple Minds T-shirt and a UK picture disc album of Once Upon A Time.
Wow! Samantha Taylor was, and still is, my idol. I would love to know what she's doing these days? I'd love for her to be my music journalism role model. :D
I went to Expo 86 when I was 11
Oh my goodness! Remember when she used to say " O.K. all you Whammies and Duranies..." Fond memmories, thanks for sharing!
Samantha Taylor, R.I.P.
I remember a show called "Hot!" with Claud Mann and then a show with Jay Gold and Shirley McQueen, plus a show that had a Jonathan guy with weird hair broadcasting from the old Queen Street Record Peddler.
She could fit more vidoes into a half hour than MM runs in an entire day now
Samantha Taylor exposed me to Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet
Yes she is of Ukrainian background and I used to watch her show every day when I was in senior elementary school. I would rush home fast as soon as classes ended
Jadwiga says "Hi", and asks you to leave her alone. She is sick of you.
@ghostgrabber I couldn't agree more!! I miss the 80's
Did you see the Rick Mercer Report last week? It was a rerun, yet he gave a brief mention of the "late 80's hipstress" Samantha Taylor. If you don't believe she's dead, JUST CHECK WITH THE CBC.
Jade has been following this on-line exchange ever since I told her about it a few days ago. She thinks MyMan37 is a riot!
@MadHighway It's so sad that her kids will once again be without their mother this Christmas.
Haven't seen this in 20 years. Thanks for posting.
Anybody know what Samantha Taylor is doing nowadays?
CBC had a music video show and hosts took predictable nicks, haha!!! Wouldn't even dream it up...
That's what DJ's used to do in Rock Radio in the 70's and 80's, the DJ was the star then, not the music so much.
It must be if Samantha Taylor mentions Expo 86.
"Samantha Taylor" is indeed tragically deceased, and Toronto Star's Pages of the Past will prove it with her obituary.
@ghostgrabber Especially when that was all a lot of us had because there was only CBC & CTV when you didn't have cable.
please go onto canada's walk of fame website and nominate her for a star.
That's terrible. I had absolutely no idea.
From 1986!
Where did you get that information, I've checked on internet and cannot find anything.
Anywhere I can get old episodes?
I am shocked. I didn't know that Jade had died. Her ex-husband and I work together and he never mentioned it.
It's so sad that Jadwiga Zakrzewski ("Samantha Taylor"'s real name) died in a tragic house fire.
@MuscleJacker Wrong. Sam Taylor is still very much alive and her birth name is Myroslava Lastivka Lydia Luciw.
@MuscleJacker Source?
I do not know the source.
Her real name was "Myroslava Lastivka Lydia Luciw", not "Jadwiga" as the uploader is saying. So if he got her real name wrong, the "tragic house fire" story is probably wrong as well.
@MuscleJacker
I don't think so.
Where? With Issa? Did they do "Fairytale" and "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side)"?
Her birth name is Jadwiga Zakrzewski. No kidding. No wonder she chose "Samantha" Taylor. (Taylor was her first husband's surname.)
too bad CBC never broadcast the show in Stereo TV
Shame really, the station in Windsor certainly could've benefited from stereo broadcasting had they let it. I think they had to wait until they went digital before that became a reality.
Thumb up for Jay Onrait:)
@sb2hot I remember another host after Samantha Taylor.
Jade is Samantha Taylor's real name. It's short for Jadwiga Zakrzewski.
@walrusgiggles Check the paper, bub! The CBC even issued a press release.
@MuscleJacker Myroslava Lastivka Lydia Luciw is Samantha Taylor's real name...
@mrceleb2006
She lives. Check wikipedia. It wouldn't let me post the link. =)
Samantha died in a tragic housefire in 1995.
Samantha Taylor....."whistful sigh".......
Jadwiga did die in a tragic house fire, and CBC even have a plaque dedicated to her in their downtown studio.
shes a foxy lady.
@MuscleJacker I think you've got your people mixed up. She's very much alive.
Could you ask your mom if she remembers the dude who invited her to Expo '86, and to pretend to be my older sister? I'm feeling much better now!
@MuscleJacker Huh?
@MuscleJacker
your joking?!
@mrceleb2006
She lives. =)
no she is still alive today.
@daisee1010 Especially when the internet didn't exist and the TV was one of the last resorts of entertaining yourself.
@sponger Dan Gallagher was already on Much Music before he hosted Video Hits.
Ms. Zakrzewski died in a house fire? What year did that happen..
Big Hair in the 80's, was this a gel related accident by chance?
@lilwildhorse She can't be a successful real estate agent if she's burnt to a crisp.
Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia. We used to call her "Jade" (short for "Jadwiga") in high school.
@CanScor74 I am sorry CanScor, but you didn't go to school with her.
Her real name is Myroslava Lastivka Lydia Luciw NOT Jadwiga Zakrzewski.

Then tell us what "Samantha"'s real name is.
Myroslava Lastivka Lydia Luciw is her birth name
It's a shame that she died in a tragic house fire.
WRONG... shes alive and well...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantha_Taylor
@lcole1926 Read the newspapers, Icicle1926!
okay that thing about Mickey Roarke was funny, but please stop with the lies.
Jade is still alive. Just career-dead.
Wow, I'd like to see how she looks. I suppose the reconstructive skin grafts would make her look radically different, like Mickey Roarke nowadays.
hmm, are those the same "reconstructive skin grafts" you had done on yr pecs to make them look like tits? just wondering! :>
Lol @ government-owned television.
She used to be a really attractive womon.
still is, troll! btw, MuscleJackoff, judging by yr profile pic you need a bra (in addition to a life!)
