Ado is only 21 years old, she became famous at the age of 17. Sings in almost all genres. You don't even know how happy I am You reacted to this live performance of Ado. The song Unravel made by TK- an incredible singer from Japan as well- is probably the greatest Opening to Anime of all time, but still I think Ado elevated it even higher!😂 She is Utaite (despite having an incredible voice she never shows her face in public) and I think she's a master of conveing emotions! The song is basically about wondering if I have demons that I must keep an eye on, or do I let them out in order to survive "in a world someone else imagined". I think it's also about such dilema like: I need to keep my monster in a Cage, until he dies, but he's a part of my soul, so if I'm killing him, I'm killing myself as well.😢 It's a very deep and scary interpretation, but I can't say it differently without being honest with myself. I suggest You react to more Ado original songs and live versions as well like: Odo or Show.😉
The way she can show the pain and emotion from the song is unreal and I have watched this performance at least a dozen times and every time she gets to that majestic scream i get chills.

it's always a joy seeing locals hearing not just unravel, but unravel by Ado live. A shock to the system, especially to those who never heard JPOP and anisongs before.
I heard it a long time ago, and I love anime
ADO is based on Vocaloid & Utaite culture.
In Japan, many young talented composers write songs using Vocaloid. After they upload it on the internet, many young talented vocals cover that song in their own way.
They call such process Utaite(I sang a song, or tried song).
In such creative Internet-based culture, many writers mixed elements from various janre to out stand.
And ADO and her composers are pinnacle of such culture.
It's like a comic; one person writes the story, and another person illustrates it. Ado was an underground vocalist, and I've been thrilled to see her transition from the bedroom closet to the Nippon Budokan.
She has a really varied catalog and adapts her singing to the song in a way I’ve never heard before. And I’m in my fifties and have seen and heard many, many hundreds of bands and artists in all sorts of genres. She is incredible.

Ado is one of the Japanese singer group known as "gimmick" who are known for not showing their faces in public.
Their motto is "Look at our music not our faces"
Thanks for the reaction and congrats that you didn't get blocked! Usually reactors need to put something over the live videos to prevent blocking because Ado's management/label/agency/whatever doesn't want anyone uploading live performances on RUclips that aren't uploaded one her official channel or the official channel the performance aired on/happened, which is pretty understandable in my opinion.
In the concert I've seen (the Saitama Super Arena Show "Campanella", which were her first solo shows) she only steps out of the cage at the end of the show when she performs the encore. I don't know if it has any significance, but I think it is a nice touch. She doesn't want people to know who she is because she's an extreme introvert and doesn't have any self-confidence, except when it comes to her voice (according to herself), which is why she doesn't want her performances to be inhibited by anything, even people knowing what she looks like. I'm a bit anxious to see how long she can stay hidden and what'll happen if she'd get exposed, especially with her EU and US shows coming up and everyone filming it with their smartphones instead of enjoying the show, which is an absolute no-go in Japan and can lead to being thrown out of the arena to fines and legal actions.
To the question "which genre is this" and the answers of "Anime music": While "Anime songs" is an actual genre I think and Unravel is the opening song of the anime Tokyo Ghoul from 2014, it's a cover of TK, aka Kitajima Toru. Ado herself only has one "Anime theme song" or opening to be more precise, which is Kura Kura (クラクラ) from 2023's Spy x Family Season 2. And she's the singing voice of the character Uta from the One Piece Red Film of course, which are 8 songs she performs inside the movie. Her music videos are all animated, but that's all these songs have to do with actual anime. They are just totally all over the place genre wise, which is one of the "trademarks" of the Vocaloid scene (and Japanese music in general), where she has her roots and her producers/songwriters come from. They don't care about genres as long as they think it sounds good. Also, to help differentiate between her own songs and her covers, if you see a 歌いました (Utaimashita, translated "I sang") behind the song title it means that it's a cover.

@@user-ii1ke9ex4u I don't think anyone really cares (officially) or notices it too much, as long as it isn't a complete copy. There's even a platform with instrumentals you can use to sing over on the Japanese video site "NicoNico" (where Ado started and still uses her original account). And there are A LOT of people rewriting/adding stuff to manga and novels (Doujinshi) and selling it at conventions or specialized stores. Japan and their industries have a very long leash on stuff like that, as long as, like I said, it isn't a copy or the original gets used in it (like reaction videos).

she can j-pop, k-pop, rock, rap, funk, heavy metal, lyrical, folk, EDM. and more (sometimes even mixing three or four styles in one song)
It seems like her genres are limited to what she has sung and what she hasn't sung yet (no restrictions whatsoever)
This may be related to her initial appearance as a 歌い手/Utaite(cover singer) on SNS and choosing to cover Vocaloid songs
If you know of a genre called Vocaloid (which refers to the use of virtual vocals to replace vocals in song production, and sometimes not to replace vocals, but rather to create music as an instrument, like A cappella)
Its main feature is that there is no specific restriction on the type of music, and any song produced using virtual vocals is collectively referred to as Vocaloid song

You should know ado does not care genre, and the scream is going to make sense once you read the lyrics and understand what the song is actually about. This is a cover song originally made by TK specifically for an anime show “Tokyo Ghoul”. The story about a boy transforming in to a monster, hoping to be remembered despite his human identity fading away.
ado in this performance is just playing devastation of the protagonist.
The discussion about genres intrigues me, because the same thing happened in the visual arts world, art styles/movements were much easier to be classified, even in the boom of new styles during modernist era.
This is the thing about the post-modernist period we are in, individual expressions are valued heavier now. Artist used to put their personal flairs into existing styles, and later develop into new things, now artists use what they saw and heard as references to serve personal expressions, the roles have shifted.
The reason it shows in music only recently is because things emerge very late in music, usually later than visual arts and literatures. Maybe what we will get from now on is always gonna be a mix of genres.

XJapan has been using glow sticks since the 80s, while Japan was still under C restriction, HYDE and LÁrc En Ciel had glow sticks with a rattle inside so nobody had to clap and yell on their 30th Anniversary Concert. The thing about Ado is that she is a vocal powerhouse and can sing anything in the style the song calls for. R&B, Pop, Rock, Ballad, EDM, it just doesn't matter. So this song is a cover, the original is by TK. The thing is this song is the opening to Tokyo Ghoul. You will fully understand her emotions & pain, and why she is caged only after you watched the anime & read the lyrics of the song as they’re very emotional and directly related
One example is nearing the end she screamed “Wasurenaide” 4x like she’s begging/in pain, as it translates to “Don’t forget” or perhaps dont forget about me.
So if you’ll understand the song better, you will cry with the emotions she brought to this song. This is the best cover I’ve ever heard, sorry TK but this is her song now.

Maybe it's like a metal ballad?
It's impossible to fit Ado into one genre, she can sing anything and does it. If you want to put this particular song into a genre, I would suggest anime metal. Many animes have opening or ending songs that are musically in the metal direction, but then don't fit 100% into the genre, for example because of the singing. The song innocent arrogance by BiSH, the opening song of Heavenly Delusion, is another good example of this and also highly recommended.
In my opinion, the Japanese don't pay much attention to any genre boundaries anyway, as you can see very clearly with Hanabie, for example, because they integrate a lot of other genres into their metalcore that otherwise don't really fit together so well. (Hanabie did a very good cover of the Ado song Odo.) However, metal combined with classical music has been around for a long time, the Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir has brought this to perfection.

Hey Aaron! But J-Pop, J-Rock, J-Metal? Honestly, we don't know but love the variety!!
I would place Ado in her roots-- vocaloid. But Ado, just like groups such as Hanabie, Band-Maid, and Atarashii Gakko! to name a few, don't stick to any particular lane and the whole music scene over there encourages it. Marty Friedman (Megadeath) had an interesting interview (lived there since 2003) about the Japanese music scene, especially pertaining to female groups.@@musikbyjh

As someone with social anxiety, it genuinely makes me so uncomfortable when people keep pushing the “let me see her” thing. Like, I guess I get the curiosity, and you have a different experience with life so it’s understandable it doesn’t just come to mind, but it hits in such a place of people trying to control my body and it’s kind of a sore spot for survivors of a lot of different horrible things to hear “I want you to appear/behave in a certain way for me” when there was often an *or else* attached to it in our lives.
I think further elaboration would get censored, but I hope you understand how it edges on autonomy violation even if you meant it purely framed from your own curiosity I just picture this shy teenager searching up reactions and getting hundreds of folk (mostly men) commenting what they want her what to do for them with her body and it gives me the ick
We really appreciate this comment, @Xanderj89, thank you. Clearly we didn't think of this, and in no way did we intend any disrespect or discomfort. Our desire to see Ado is purely based in awe of her musical performance, not to judge any aspect of personal appearance. She's the embodiment of "don't look at me, listen to me" which is the exact opposite of kpop where they can't sing so they sell their bodies 😂
Still, if you sell your voice and ability to sing, this is the skill of a master, but selling your body is already sad
