  • Updated with tabs here - • The Gift of Guilt - In...
    A cover of 'Gift of Guilt' by Gojira.
    Tuning - Drop C
    Usual double tracking and hard panned left and right. There's a few more layers added as well. The single guitar tapping line was run to a reverb aux track just to get it a bit closer to the original.
    Not a massively complex track but the big bends and pinch harmonics on the third fret are very satisfying.
    Gear for those interested;
    Dean Cadillac Select into a UA-25EX hooked up to Logic X.
    Signal Chain;
    TSB-1 Tyrant, Noise Gate, Le456 amp sim, LeCab with a combination of God's cab, Marshall and Diezel Impulses, Stereo Tape delay, and finally a bit of subtractive EQ to just tidy up the sound a bit as always.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hey dude, this is such a good cover.
    On those triplet pinches, is it a pinch on the 3rd fret full bend up, and the second one is a pinch as the bend comes down? Most tabs I see seem to be wrong as the way you are doing it definitely sounds right.

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 лет назад

      Hey, thanks 🤘 and yes it's pinch on the 3rd and bend it up - [it's a pretty big bend - 2 and a half steps], then pinch again on the third and release the bend then an open at the end with a palm mute on the open C

    Hello, I have a mixing question.
    When you say Double tracking, do you mean that you have 2 tracks for each track/instrument?
    Do you pan both of the tracks at the same place or do you pan one at the left and the other at the right?
    Great cover!

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  4 года назад +3

      Thanks for the comment. So double tracked guitars mean I have recording the guitar twice. The two guitar tracks are then typically panned hard left and hard right. If I took the one recording and copy/pasted it then panned it left and right it would just sound like it's coming from the centre. By having 2 different recordings it creates the wide stereo sound as there will be slight differences in each recording. Bass guitar tends to always be single tracked and kept central.
      You may come across people saying wad tracking as well. That's 4 guitar recordings and typically two panned to the left and two to the right. People often have one pair of recordings through one amp set up and then the second pair through a slightly different amp setup to get two tones that compliment each other.
      Hope that helps!

  • @reza_qn

    man just found your channel and I love your content, I have just one question, how do you play over a song and only your recordings of guitar can be heard? like the original guitar parts on the song can't be heard but the vocals and drums and ur recordings are hearable, It must be a stupid question but I'm a noobie in recording :D

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  2 года назад +1

      It's a lot of eq. The stock Logic eq plugin lets you do mid/side eq so I can cut down the 1k-5k range on the sides of the recording and lower the volume, making space for my own guitars

    Those harmonics are fucking killer! I'm using .56 on my low string and I'm having to bend REALLY far in comparison to your video, would it be easier for me to hit those pitches in the prechorus if jump down a few gauges? Thanks :)

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  4 года назад

      I imagine I would have had Ernie Ball 11-48 as I flip flop between standard and Drop C a lot, so that helps makes the bends a bit easier. A lighter gauge will definetly help with some of the bigger bends. There's a chance they could have even been 10-46 but I really don't remember. I have found I can catch pinch harmonics better on slightly looser strings though.

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 лет назад +2

      It's a pinch harmonic on the 3rd fret. The basic idea is to hit the string with the plectrum then touch the same string with the side of the thumb to create a harmonic. It's similar to if you play an open string and lightly touch over the 3rd/5th/7th fret it create a natural harmonic, but this time the picking hand causes the harmonic. Zakk Wylde uses them a lot!

    Dude what do you think about it..
    now i play just by plugging my guitar ( Ibanez rga72qm with sh4 and sh2n hot rodded picks) into pc -> guitar rig 5, im thinking about buying Line 6 pod ux or something for better sound, it will give something, is it worth money ;_; ?

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  6 лет назад +1

      I've never really tried the line 6 pod stuff so can't say much about them. I use the LePou amp plug-ins and an impulse loader as they're free. If you search for LePou amp sims in RUclips I imagine a lot will come up.
      The idea of having an amp head and a cab impulse is similar to what quite a lot of the digital modellers are doing it, just over two plugins instead of one. If you haven't got an external sound card that's something to look into as well.

    • @kewinpolak2
      @kewinpolak2 6 лет назад

      Well i think LePou amp plug-ins are similiar to what is included in Guitar Rig 5, but i just want to know is there a big difference between guitar -> pc or guitar -> Line 6 pod/ua-25ex stuff like this -> pc :)

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  6 лет назад +1

      +Kebon there will be difference yes. Having a dedicated sound card will mean the sound is processed better and it will also be isolated from the electronics of the computer which could affect the sound.
      My interface cost around the £100 mark about 7 years ago and I barely used it for about 2 years. I've only had more use for the clearer sound since I started playing around with recording. So it's not a necessity if you're just playing and practising (I use my practise amp over going into my computer for that) but it is a good thing for recording

    How do you record with the actual track in the background and have it sound clear??? all while playing over top of it!!!

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 лет назад +2

      I set the main track up in logic then record the guitar as clean DI and run a virtual guitar chain with impulse responses. I then add back in a tiny bit of reverb on the double tracked guitars to add a bit of a room vibe and make them sound less dry. I also typically cut out some mids on the original track - 500hz-4.5khz ish - to make some space for my guitar to takes its place. Finally I'd put a high and low shelf on the original track to boost the high and low end and fill the sound out a bit more. I then also put a really basic mastering chain on to boost the volume up.

      Drop C. For tapping its best to think of it as a pull off but with your picking hand instead of the fretting hand. Hit the string hard then almost flick it when you let go.

      No problem. I tend to flick/pull off down towards the ground, but you can also pull up towards you, just a case of whichever is more comfortable really.

    i dont know why, but alternate picking is super hard to me, i can only down pick like metallica

      I was like that for a year too when i started playing, my recommendation is to force yourself to use alternate picking whenever possible to get out of your comfort zone and your rhythm will get used to it. A good practise is to learn Sweet child O' mine's intro in alternate picking. that's what did it for me tbh. good luck. same thing goes for using your pinky too.

    At 02:13 do you do a pinch harmonic on the third fret + bend, after that a bend at the second fret and after that a pinch harmonic at the third fret? I just can't seem to get it right

    • @Jeff-ik9zj
      @Jeff-ik9zj 5 лет назад

      Or something like bend at the third fret, open and a pinch harmonic after that

    • @ShadowMantraSteve
      @ShadowMantraSteve  5 лет назад +2

      Hiya, it's a pinch harmonic on 3rd fret and bend up on the first note. While the string is still bent another pinch harmonic on 3rd fret again and releasing the bend back to normal.
      So pinch and bend up, pinch and bend back down then an open string to finish.
      The bend is a pretty big one, about 2 and a half semitones.
