  • Hey there, thank you for watching my video.
I’ve done some comparisons between Sennelier professional watercolours and Schmincke Horadam also professional watercolours.
This is only my opinion, I’m not a professional artist, I do this as a hobby in my space time.
I hope you enjoy the video

I just purchased the Schminke set of 24, and this comparison really made me happy that I chose that brand ❤

Something I noticed when I started using Sennelier they mix incredibly well with even other brands of paint as well. I saw another video where the lightfastness was tested and there was no change in the paint. Really impressed with the vibrancy and the mixing ability. I’ll be buying more.

Here’s the problem I see with swatch comparisons: a swatch isn’t a painting and painting is the point of having a set of watercolours.
I have sets of both Sennelier and Schminke, as well as a few others. I bought the Sennelier set first, had some issues with the choice of palette, so when I saw a special edition (‘historical’) set of Schminkes on sale, I jumped for it. I thought I preferred the Schminkes.
At one point, though, I started not only dating the paintings in my sketchbook, but lightly pencilling in what media I’d used. Recently, I went back through some old sketchbooks, pausing at every painting I liked (not too many of those!) When I peered at the annotations, I was stunned to discover that every single painting I thought had come out well was painted with the Senneliers. This doesn’t mean they’re better paints. It just means they seem to bring out the best of my modest talents.
Swatches don’t matter. What matters is what you paint.

I may say that I use a lot of Sennelier and not that much Shmincke. Shmincke are very expensive in my country and I found one negative thing about them. They run out of the pan very quickly. Just two or three not so big paintings and you see pretty deep wells in pans. Not nice for the price you have to pay :). Nevertheless my beloved are still W&N Pro. Thank you so much for comparing these two brands.😊

I like them both but actually prefer Sennelier. There’s no need to pre wet Sennelier (Similar to M Graham, they’re honey based).
Cautious in pre wetting Schmincke too … paint will jump on your brush, far more than you realize. It’s not more pigmented, there’s a lot of paint on the brush. 😊 The pans will run out of paint quite quick if you don’t pay attention or have the habit of “digging” in your paint.
Thanks for the comparison. I like to mix and match the 2 in my palettes. They work great together.

Great video. I feel like both brands have purpose in an art studio. But yes I agree I generally lean towards schmincke, tho in US schmincke is waaaaay more expensive then sennelier...Anyway. thanks for sharing, I love these kinds of watercolor comparisons🥰

Fun to watch. I have used both Schmincke and Sennelier over the past 10 years. As for watercolor glazing, Schmincke will glaze just as luminous as Sennelier using only half as much paint with each glaze. Just pale it down with more water and glaze. No one does this glazing better than Artist Susan Harrison-Tustain. Still the best Watercolor teacher I’ve had. Thanks for sharing.

I own both brands. It’s worth remembering the more water you add the less lightfast the paint will be, so in that respect, Sennelier is a much better choice if doing a lot of glazes, specifically for botanical work. One example of how lightfastness is affected by watering down is Daniel Smith’s Moonglow which, while listed as lightfast by DS, is actually very fugitive unless used neat out the tube with just a damp brush. The issue is pigment PR177 which is also listed as lightfast but becomes fugitive as soon as water is added to it.
Sennelier do glaze extremely well, much like W&N professional do, and have wonderful luminosity, however, I don’t like Sennelier’s Alizarin (which is fujitive) and not a typical crimson colour.
Schminke is more creamy & more opaque - both brands have their uses.

Aww thank you for watching and for the information about lightfastness 😊. I actually regret entitling this video Sennelier vs Schmincke because they are both fantastic paints and like you said, they both have there place. I’ve done another video where I’ve done the same tests for Schmincke and Daniel Smith but put that as a comparison rather than vs.

If you use WN tube paints add a drop or two of glycerine to the well and mix and they will rewet easier. I use Daniel Smith/m Graham because they rewet easily.

aww thank you for watching the video. I’ve heard from other subscribers that as Sennelier watercolours contain honey, they may not mix well with paints that don’t contain honey. Something to just be mindful of 😊

    I have a question:
At first THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!
I want to buy a professionell watercolor Set and I dont know if I should buy SCHMINCKE HORADAM or SENNELIER.
But now I See your helpful Video!!
But my question now is: are These really the sennelier artist quality? Or are These the petit l'aquarell which is for students?
Because I think in your Video the schmincke made such a better Performance...even with the Red colour! But I thought sennelier artist quality has the absolut best Red Tones...So I'm really confused
    Best regards Ninja

@@TammyNewmanArt My aunt will be getting me one of the two from Germany. The schminke set is 52 euros and sennelier one is 50euros. So not much difference. That's why I was confused. I thought of schminke since getting separate pans would be easier from jacksons, but I haven't seen sennelier pans on jacksons alot. So Now I'm leaning towards the sennelier set since I know I can get schminke one from other sources. 😂 So you see........ Alot of confusion here. I'll let you know which set my aunt is getting me.
