Simon just completely misunderstanding that the monopoly found at the farm was suggested to have belonged to a known train robber who was a friend of Daly and therefore they could have played the game at his home before he took it with hi. To the farm, fully explaining Daly’s fingerprints on it.
If any of the writers want to do another Heist script, Simon is not the only one that finds a good heists to be great relief in comparison to all the murder, then I would recommend looking into the NOKAS robbery. Very well documented, and a great story that cannot be told often enough. There is even a movie!
Yeah, happened in my hometown. I was on my way to work when it happened, and the new NOKAS building was currently being build 50m from my work. The walls on the new building were THICK!
For all those talking about a 4 hour video (which I love as well), but we need to remember that it is actually a 3 hour video, just Simon's tangents make up the rest of the time!

I had to pause at around 2 hours and 10 minutes into it because I was laughing so hard every time he stopped reading to go off on them for not getting lawyers.
I listen to these as a podcast because I work a boring overnight shift but I really wanted to compliment Dave on this script and I know yer writers pop into the comments occasionally. It gave me Pulp Fiction feels, following a character to their end and then switching to a different connected character and seeing how their life crossed with the others and repeat. I enjoyed it quite thoroughly, thank you.
Thanks! I transitioned to that after Leatherslade, because otherwise the names and events in chronological order would have become wayyyyyy too confusing.😂

Hey, Simon - your perception of what’s “elderly” is going to change drastically as you get older. I remember waking up on my 60th birthday and thinking “60? No, that can’t be right, 60 is OLD! And I’M not old!” I’m a decade older than that now, and I still don’t really feel like I’m “old”.
My parents were good friends with Tommy and renee wisbey, I used to get birthday cards with money in from them as a child signed "love tom and Renee, don't tell anyone where you got it". Such lovely people

To understand just how effective Royal Mail is, years back two drivers (who have actually set speed records) posted a letter and then raced across the UK in a sports car and got there after the letter. Granted the letter traveled on multiple planes, but still an impressive feat for 39 pence.
Don't be afraid of getting old Simon. You'll have the grandkids running around that love you the most because Papa Whistler spoils them & by the time they get annoying, it'll be time for them to go back home for the start of the new school year, it'll be awesome!
While I greatly appreciate most of Simon's idiosyncrasies, his dry quips, tangents, criminal tips & mispronunciations, sometimes he'll identify some character traits that someone from the case he's reading has & segue it back to himself even if it has nothing to do with him or it's an obvious observation. "Will _I_ be considered old in 25 or so years?" Like, yes, Fact Boi, time tends to be linear and so is aging 😅😂
4 HOURS? David you are an absolute Legend❤ Simon can go on soooo many tangents, give advice to criminals and we are highly entertained. Thank you David for writing, Simon for telling criminals how to do crime and Jen for editing❤❤❤❤
The thing about Dally getting off was that Reynolds brought the set with him, and Dally's prints were on it beforehand, because he'd played with the set at Reynolds' house at some point before he brought it to the hideout, which is reasonable enough to a regular person, even if it is _deeply_ jammy and probably a big fib
Well, that was pretty epic. I watched it all in 1 go as I had nothing else to do today and found it quite enjoyable and well-written. And probably well-edited, too, as I'm sure there were times when it was hard to keep things straight.
So glad Simon finally got a heist. He needed this breather from some of the awful stuff he reads to us. His excitement on this one is great. Thanks for this one.
I'm glad you took a few sittings to record this, because I took several to listen to it. Well worth it - fantastic episode! This feels like David's next book...
About halfway through this episode I mentioned it to my mum, whose immediate response was "that thing organised by Ronnie Biggs, right?" I was baffled as to why she'd remember HIM of all people...until I got to the end. Dude's an absolute legend.
Simon, Monopoly games aren't chained in place. Did I miss them saying that the games were there when they arrived? Most likely the guy's friend played often played it, and brought it with him when he knew he was going to be lying low for a while. I immediately found it likely that fingerprints only found on one piece of mobile evidence could have gotten there before the crime.
Exactly. I thought that was brilliant on the part of the lawyer and it clearly worked. The finger prints could have gotten on that monopoly at any point. It definitely doesn't mean he popped around to the gangs hideout for a game
Right? I was thinking the only way it wouldn't have worked is if there was some evidence like a receipt showing that they had bought the monopoly game the day before or day after the heist. But when I didn't hear that I thought "must have been an old game they had laying around, fair play."
I loveeee these long episodes! I listen to them while I work overnight- I had never heard the term about having the stuffing beat out of you and I tried so hard not to die laughing at work, it felt like silent library 😅
can you imagine being a criminal and Simon's voice be your "conscience" while you are being interrogated? Simon's shouting "WHERE IS YOUR LAWYER???? IF YOU ARE GIVING UP INFORMATION YOU'VE GOTTA CUT A DEAL!!!!" This true crime podcast *is* giving criminals good advice - good for you, Simon.
The Flying Squad was notorious in the 60s and 70s. It wasn't a case of whether you were guilty or innocent when they nicked you, it was how long before they convinced you that you were guilty and confessed.
Silly me. I lied down after an early dinner thinking "4 hours, I'll drift off to this". Simon's fierce condemnations and shrieks of "LAWYER, LAWYER!!" make that impossible.
Sometimes, especially during this video, I can't figure out who Simon is rooting for and I'm dragged along for the ride with him because of his amusing commentary 😅😂😂 Excellent video as always Simon & team!!

When I heard how many different people were involved in this story, I thought I'd never be able to keep up with them all, but the writer and editor did a masterful job in keeping them differentiated and connected to the story. Great work!
I have been so interested in the Great Train Robbery as I am from Leighton Buzzard and I have to say this is the best podcast / telling of the events I have ever listened to. I have learnt things too. Thank you David for the great writing and Simon for bringing it to life and making me laugh. Simon's 'how to do a train robbery' is awesome
It had to be one of David’s. I think he just loves watching Simon plough through it all. Love David’s writing, always so descriptive to the point of extremes.
My grandpa was a train engineer. From what I understand, it was one of the “family careers” for that arm of the family. Before he went to war? Trains. During the war? Trains. Came home and did what? Trains (after staying in ye olde fashioned TB ward.)
Please make a video about the Freddy Heineken kidnapping. It's a very interesting story especially how Freddy pretty much managed to catch the kidnappers himself. There is a lot if info about this case also interviews with the kidnappers and a movie
Great episode! I’ve never heard of this heist before and what an interesting story and cast of characters. I’m absolutely going to download this for entertainment when no internet is available. Although I will listen to just about anything on CC, the longer scripts without brutal murders really appeal to me. This is my second favorite episode right behind Scrooge McDuck. Thanks for another great script David!
Dr. Baker-excellent script!! I really appreciate this trip into heist territory where I could enjoy your talents in writing and research without having to worry when the story might get too gruesome for my tummy. This monster must have taken a ton of time and effort, but well worth it, I say. Also props to Simon, Martin and the other editor whose name was obscured at closing by the box promoting another episode. Hate it when that happens. Anything to be done about it?
4hrs, let's do this shizz!! David, I'm sure this we'll be epic! Marilyn, I've no doubt the editing will be as fun as ever! And if anyone is looking for another heist to give Simon a palate cleanser - Hatton Garden, maybe? Brits will be pretty familiar, international viewers a little less so.
4 hour, that is more or less the length of a full audiobook - and I would say the writing, presentation and editing make this a really great way to pass that time; very interesting, and truly engaging. I thought I was going to maybe listen to an hour a day over 4 days, but no, all the way through in one go, just pausing to boil the kettle for tea!

This is so so good. I keep replaying it cause I miss parts or fall asleep but the story is so interesting I have to know it all. Excellent writing and tangents y'all
This reminds me of the Lee Murray story. UFC fighter who did the biggest heist in UK history. He fought Anderson Silva
When I heard how many different people were involved in this story, I thought I'd never be able to keep up with them all, but the writer and editor did a masterful job in keeping them differentiated and connected to the story. Great work!
Thank you David!!!
Aww hell yeah. Four hours of Simon reads a heist. This is why I’m subscribed.
This is the perfect video for sleeping. Thanks Simon and co! David, editor.. all you people are awesome
I almost didnt watch this because of the length. So glad i did! This was a great one!!
I love the super long episodes. I listen at work and it makes the work day zip by. Thanks Simon!
I'm been asking for this for ages thanks david you rule
I've seen him do an ep on it before, but Idr which channel. It was a fun presentation so probably CC or BB done about 2 (?) years ago.
I absolutely adore spending my entire evening with this podcast🥰 much love to Simon and Team, you make life suck less ❤
Awesome, just like that I have plans this evening. Thanks Simon and crew!
I very much enjoyed this episode, it was absolutely excellent, one of my favorite so far. I actually really enjoy the long episodes, too.
I do love a good heist story occasionally. Excellent work!
I love that Simon's level engagement stayed so high for the whole script. Bravo!
This took me 3 days to watch.... & I enjoyed EVERY SECOND!
Please do more of these long episodes Simon! From across the pond in Georgia USA
Sorting mail on trains in Britain ended in the early 2000s. Transporting mail by train ended earlier this year.
What do they do now
@@insertgenericusernamehere2402Sort the mail in central depots and move it by lorry and plane. Some mail is still moved by train, but in containers not dedicated trains.
@@Grimmtoof got it, thanks for letting me know
Fab David, what a script, it just kept on going and didn't feel like several hours. Thank you
