Conspiracy theory: The writers are increasing the length of the script to keep Simon preoccupied. That way, they can -dig the secret tunnel out of the basement- have some more free time to refine their mushroom soup recipe.

Hello everybody! It's me, today's writer! As you may have noticed, the video is a bit longer than usual, and there will be another 2-to-3 hour episode of mine shortly. I would be super happy to get your feedback on these super-deep dives. Is this something you appreciate? Or would you rather have it shortened?
Also (SPOILER!!!) I have a factual correction to make: The bomb in Hanover actually had a killswitch - a fact I only became aware of after the episode had been recorded. I was misled by another incorrect account and didn't realise it in time. I am sorry about that!

Yeah, there's a couple of channels that he takes this approach with. Casual Criminalist often is nowhere near this lighthearted, because a lot of the stuff that it covers gets *really* dark. Decoding the Unknown has a similar format but is a skeptical take on various conspiracy theories. Can be fun, but comes at the cost of somewhat poisoning your recommended videos list because RUclips's algorithm seems to be incapable of telling the difference between conspiracist nutjobs and people who are debunking, lampooning, or just providing education about the reality that said nutjobs distort.
There's also Brain Blaze, which is similarly less formal format, though I don't quite enjoy it as much as this channel or Decoding the Unknown.

I'm not a doctor so I can't go throwing diagnoses around but I AM neuro-divergent and Arno very much seems to have a lot of the same traits. His childhood behavior- retreating from reality and his laser-like focus on the few things that stimulated him- are very much behaviors that kids with autism, adhd and other neurological differences can exhibit. The impulsive behavior as an adult, as well. The description of the energy, rush and happiness he felt once he started making his first plan sounds exactly like how it feels to fall into hyper-fixation; at least from my own experience.
Regardless, this was a great episode! Very well written and researched, and I enjoy the long scripts very much.

There's just something so intriguing and endearing about hearing a case covering an anti-hero who keeps foiling the police or, in the Mad Trapper's case, keeps escaping death (until he didn't). A really important part for me though is that they do not kill anyone. There are a seemingly endless amount of videos on youtube covering serial killers but very little covering cases where no one dies. The videos stand out against the sea of killer cases.

Simon describing how he got 1 migraine in his life and how it helped he realize the true nightmare they are for the person experiencing it makes me feel both grateful and empathetic. While i feel absolutely terrible he had to suffer through it, it warms my heart and makes me feel a little more understood. Migraine sufferers hear, “its just a bad headache” and other dismissive and ignorant comments about the absolute pure hell we go through while dealing with a migraine attack. While i am happy Simone feels more empathetic towards migraine sufferers, i am sorry you had to experience that pure agony of a migraine. And I hope you never ever have to experience one ever again. At first, I was disappointed when Simon refused to read the gory details. But now I'm grateful for it. Simon, his writers, and his editors actually seem to have helped me with reframing some traumas that have resisted therapy.
Before the Casual Criminalist, I would spend hours every day for weeks going through Wikipedia lists of serial killers, rapists, terrorists, etc, until the nightmares got so bad that I'd have trouble sleeping (the fixation side of ADHD can be a real bitch sometimes). I experienced CSA and I suspect that some of my fixation was a case of "Get over yourself, look how much worse it was for these other people. See, THIS person fought back, why didn't YOU? This person suffered for DAYS, you only had a few uncomfortable minutes". As though trauma has an objective scale and you must score high enough to have "legitimate" PTSD, and anything less is just weakness. I have a degree in Psychology and I've been to therapies, yet I couldn't be understanding towards myself. And because I was reading these accounts by myself and with only my own interpretation, things could more easily get out of hand and start me on a nightmare doom spiral, which would prompt me to stop reading the biographies until the nightmares went away. But once gone, I'd start feeling that urge again to revisit those biographies and find new ways to be cruel towards those memories of when I was a scared child.
It's been a long time now since I last became fixated to the point of nightmares. I no longer feel that strong urge to look up the details of the abuse suffered by victims when Simon refuses to read them. I think this is because each story is being processed by at least three other people before it gets to me, and each person is processing them without any judgement towards me and instead usually places the majority of the negative judgement on the people who are actually responsible for the crimes. The writer takes the information they have gathered and is the first person to process the events into a script, and typically spends the most time in that state of information processing. Sometimes during that processing, they might experience some of their own difficulties on how to process the information, they may think a detail is an important CSI when it's actually more Saw, but generally they do a really good job of honoring the victims. Simon is the second person to process the information, and given the cold read format, it's essentially in real time. His reactions have often helped me remodel my maladaptive response of comparing myself to the victims into the adaptive response of recognizing the victims as people who had/have their own agencies that are utterly separate from my identities and are deserving of my compassion, but not my comparison. The third person to process the events is the editor. Their choice of music and use of silence have been especially good cues for when I need to pay attention to particular emotions or be mindful of someone else's experience (whether it's a victim, an investigator, Simon, or the editor).
I know that people can develop new traumas from reading, listening, or observing traumatic events experienced by other people. But it never occurred to me that a person could experience a sort of observer-mediated therapy with repeated exposure to a nonthreatening modeler of appropriate emotional responses to traumatic events. Makes me wonder if this is a reproduceable effect?

      @frankiemillcarek6976 11 месяцев назад +9

Really appreciate your thoughts here. I go through bouts of true crime/spooky fixation (usually when left home alone of course) and only stop when I inevitably get nightmares. It is not the healthiest way to operate so I have always appreciated Simon's team refocusing on victims for me *and* pointing out that despite my interest I don't NEED to know the gory details.

    • @rachelwebber3605

@@frankiemillcarek6976 Yeah, my fixations would get worse when my partner and I were physically separated for work or school, and also during periods of deep, unmedicated depression. While I still get fixated (my ADHD is intentionally unmedicated, but I manage it with behavioral strategies), I happily have not sought out the lists of serial killers on Wikipedia in a long time.

EMDR is an actual therapeutic tool for helping with trauma, so it makes sense that something like this could also work for it, too.
Using an outside source to help you re-regulate your emotional response to a more normative level, by watching someone else model a more usual pattern of reactions.
(no formal psych training or knowledge, but my autistic ass did have to aftermarket kludge together a social module, and then I got into a pilot program for getting us shrinks to help with the transition into high school, and adult society, which is how I escaped getting any noticable amounts of late chidhood to adulthood trauma)l

Simon, wealth makes a massive difference to happiness. It relieves the constant stress of trying to pay your bills, it means you can make healthy decisions, heat your house, take your dog to the vet, buy things you need without worrying about how pay for them like a mattress that doesn't hurt your back, or a phone that doesn't have a broken screen, drive a car that doesn't give you carbon monoxide poisoning. It buffers you from world events to an extent, means you can live somewhere warm and dry where you don't have to worry about noise and crime and feeling afraid for your life at night. Yes. Wealthy people ARE happier. Maybe if you're depressed for reasons that aren't circumstantial, although quite a lot of depression IS, it might not make you happy, but it would relieve 80% of your problems, so you can focus on your mental health and wellbeing, and having healthy relationships. But I believe after a certain point it has diminishing returns. If you have enough, and you're not living hand to mouth, it might not make that big a difference. The difference in happiness between $100K a year and $1M is probably not that great, but having money in the bank and knowing you can afford health care definitely help your mental health.

1000% agreed that money isn't everything, but having spent time with my three kids in a homeless shelter, I can testify that having enough to take care of the bills without starving for a few days every month sure alleviates the anxiety and makes the depression easier to handle (cos I can afford the meds and therapy). It's hand to mouth for me every month, but I'm no longer digging myself deeper into debt monthly by borrowing from check cashing joints to get the rent in on time. Would I like it if my pay kept up with the cost of living? You bet. (I have significantly less buying power now than I did when I first started my current job six years ago.) But do I think being a millionaire would solve all my problems? No, cos not all my problems are external. ❤

To be fair, I got the impression Simon was talking about the difference between having enough and being rich. I’m constantly balancing on the poverty line but I have enough to get by and I don’t get the sense I’d be much happier if I was rich. But maybe I feel that way because I know some rich families and they’re the most unhappy, emotionally constipated people I’ve ever met. Every single person in every single family struggles with severe mental turmoil. In one of the families the dad died three years ago and it’s still a huge drama on his birthday and death day where they all have their individual freak-outs and I end up having to house the oldest daughter for a couple of days because they can’t be around each other and it’s too stressful for her. I understand why they’re still mourning him but I don’t understand why they still freak out to this level every year. And then there was all the fighting over inheritance when he died. I’m just guessing but I think it all stems from the fact that you have to be an a**hole to get that rich and the parents pass that on to their children. So I agree, enough money to be comfortable is good but I’d never ever want to be rich.

As somebody who was "forced" to repeat a school year (partially because my teacher hated me as i know now) i can clearly say it creates more problems than it solves. Specially in lower education years the difference is so big that i only got top results in my second year while actually being incredibly more lazy than before. In some way this was the year i learned how to beat school with very little efford and i never had problems again. Nowadays i understand that i learned the worst things back then and that all i really would have needed is adults to invest some actual time into me.

Okay, first off, fantastic video. The three hours whizzed by, it was so good.
Next i wanted to say that i am fairly certain Arno is autistic. I wanted to talk about this, cuz i am also autistic, and really related to him in a lot of ways.
Here are some conditions of autism that Arno showcased in childhood and adulthood:
    - lack of social skills
    - struggling with verbal communication (more so in childhood for Arno)
    - sensory overload
    - a tendency toward hyperfixation
    - a strong sense of justice (in this case Arno's code about not killing people)
Even the part about "copying people to appear normal," that is an autistic coping mechanism called mirroring, and is a part of autistic masking.
Autistic people are also more prone to depression (a result of constantly having to mask and being led to believe there is some "wrong with us.") Sadly, we are also more susceptible to alcoholism as a coping mechanism to deal with the stress of overstimulation and as a crutch during social situations.
There was a part in here that nearly made me cry. When Dennis was talking about how his depression was directed inwards, because Arno felt as though there was something innately wrong with him.
That really truly resonates with me. I also dealt with severe depression back when i was undiagnosed. When you are autistic and dont know it, you are just made to feel like there is just something wrong with you.
Anyway, i just wanted to share that, because it is supremely sad that his parents - and society - led Arno to feel that way about himself. It is unbeleivably sad, and i am glad he found happiness in the end.
(Also, when Dennis is speculating about the answer to the question in regards to copycats, and Arno just gives practical advice without suggesting remorse, this is likely due to the fact that he missed the implied question about remorse. This is an aspect of autism, taking things literally or at face-value.)
EDIT: I dont think this justifies what he did, btw. The fact he didnt kill anyone is a blessing, but he is lucky people didnt die. He played fast and loose with peoples lives in my opinion. Plus it was pointless destruction for his own financial gain. However, i am also glad he was not sentenced to life or something like that, as he didnt kill anyone.

As someone with diagnosed severe ADHD and depression and very much likely but so far undiagnosed Autism, I fully agree. All of those signs and especially the coping mechanisms and copying other people to seem normal resonated with me on a very personal level.

I loved this episode, thank you so much to the whole team.
And especially thank you for the lack of gore. I’m sick of not being able to find true crime with out being bombarded by the really nasty crimes. What I’m interested in is the investigation. So not having to wade through the dregs of humanity first is very nice. There are plenty of crime shows that just go for shock factor and have very little about investigating or what anything happens in the first place. I really appreciate your respect as a team for victims, willingness to admire or poke fun at police and criminals as required, and your questioning of the narrative rather than just listing who did which nasty thing to who. Thank you.

I think Scrooge accidentally stumbled on a way of releasing endorphins in his system maybe for the first time in his life. He then carried on with his crimes essentially for fun and pleasure [and greed] rather than malice or evil....However like adrenaline junkies he would have had to take greater risks and escalated his crimes, maybe ending in carnage....

This has to be one of my favorite videos on this channel! A breath of fresh air where nobody gets killed, and the criminal in question gets the treatment he needed, and it is very surprising that Scrooge was able to uphold a moral compass that really ended up as a great benefit, and the fact he was able to somewhat combat his depression through criminal activity is so weird yet wholesome?

I work night shifts in social care and they get really boring most of the time. Thank you Simon, Deniz and Jen for amusing me for a good quarter of my shift tonight, this was a brilliant episode and I was eagerly anticipating what would happen next the whole way through.
On a more serious note, I’ve battled severe depression for my entire adult life and most of my childhood. I really felt for Arno when I heard what kind of a mental prison he suffered in for so many years and it can genuinely cause the most irrational behaviour, especially when untreated. I’m glad to hear that he has found peace and joy in his life and that gives me hope for the future too.

As a disabled and insomnia ridden house wife, I only go out on a Friday for 3 to 4 hours (emotional support doggit needs grooming!!!) I LOVE the long ones!!! My disability worsens with silence and darkness, so I download what I want on a Friday at the pub, and just loop them on repeat for 24 hours till the next week! I have got ALL of CasCrim, and most of the other Simon channels! My phone is on 24/7, either in my hand while I'm watching, in a pocket while I'm cleaning or on the counter when I'm in the kitchen. Even when I'm facebooking on the laptop...yip, Simon in the background!!! The long ones are AWESOME for midnight viewings!
Thank you, Simon, for your time and effort that goes into recording and for gathering such a PHENOMENAL team of writers and Jen, your editing is top notch!
