  • 1988. For special guest Miles Davis, talk show host Bill Boggs brings in young musicians to play for Miles. Joey DeFrancesco was the organist and Miles wanted to know his name once he heard him play. A few months later, Miles hired Joey. From their 1988 appearance in Warsawkl Poland, Joey solos on Miles' immortal Tutu.

    I’ve always thought that Oleo quote was so imaginative. What an incredible musician, his legacy will not be forgotten. RIP ❤️❤️

    Miles was so great about sharing the limelight with those truly talented; Joey was born great and I'm grateful a giant like Miles embraced him.

    I saw Joey D maybe 10 years ago at the Oakville jazz festival in Ontario, Canada. not many people there we had front row seats and his amazing playing just blew my mind
    RIP legend.

    Right after I started working at Ensoniq in '86, Joey came by the factory with his mom (they were friends with one of the owners). I stood outside the demo room listening to him play. I was speechless.

    Seeing Joey play key a keytar is a fever dream but so surreal at the same time. Nobody does it on the organ like Mr. DeFrancesco and his energy and self-accompaniment is still unparalleled.

    Amazing how Miles knew absolutely nothing about Joey, but he could recognize his extraordinary talent in just a couple of minutes of listening to him.

      Miles probably could tell BEFORE he started playing. He said many times how he could tell just by the way someone walked, talked, dressed, and how he'd pick up or sit at the instrument. His ability as a talent detector was uncanny and proven for 40 years.

    Wow! loved him as an organist but never knew the back story of how he emerged on the jazz scene. Gone but not forgotten. I was always concerned about his weight;n ot always a big guy.

    I had the pleasure of meeting Joey D. In Detroit Michigan, actually in Ferndale Michigan, at a record store called Sam's Jams. He gave a great small and short performance. And signed CDs

    This is great. I was a fan of Mr. DeFrancesco. I wish he could’ve stayed at this weight. He’d probably be alive today. Health comes first ladies and gentleman. Eat right, go for walks, do things in moderation.

      nah Marcus hadn't played live on tour with miles since the early 80s ...i think post 81-83 .. the Night Muisc tv show was the only other live performance together with Marcus and Miles...Marcus continued producing and writing for Miles mid 80s until he passed in 91'

    So sad that his weight increased dramatically from this early clip, the heart just can’t take carrying around so much weight, this taught me a wake up call ! try to keep my weight down and live as long as possible.

      Agreed. He is no doubt a great player and would run circles around most players in this genre but the keytar sounds like a cheap Casio budget piano. I know the DX-family of sounds are not everyone's cup of tea but the tone makes this performance sound like amateur hour or a demo track on a 90s keyboard.

    This is so cool, jeez joey must have still been in his teens. Wasn't Bill Boggs recorded in NYC? It's just curious because I thought Joey was from the Philly area

      I know Mr. Boggs did Midday Live at WNEW in NYC. Not sure about the station that broadcast this clip, originally, though.

      Hey Jazz video Guy, I went and watched a complete tape of that show. That particular show was taped in Philly. That's right about the Mid day live. I remember it well it was on WNEW channel 5 in NY.

      It’s Ricky Wellman. Maybe a little stiffer version of drummer than Dennis. I think Dennis never played with Miles although rumors say Miles wanted him in his Band

    I love Joey DeFranceso. However, I'm not a fan of all the electronic toys and gadgetry. Joey really shines behind the Hammond B3 and that is a sound that will always turn heads in the room. RIP Joey, you will be sadly missed Sir. His solo on Sunny speaks for itself (with Martino, Scofield and Landham) in the following video - ruclips.net/video/syercy760YQ/видео.html

      Oh yeah, Sunny is one of my favorite jazz standards. I love that performance but I hadn't heard it in some time. Thanks for posting. Man... we lost Martino last year, and now DeFrancesco. At least Scofield is still with us. He's only 70, so hopefully he will continue to be for a good long while.

    In the 70s we got into Kung Fu, weights, running, meditation, spirituality. Off drugs. In the eighties we got into food and drink. Most of us became obese and diabetic with hypertension and respiratory problems from tobbacco and herb. Let's be honest about what is killing off our great artists. Put on 200 lbs. and you will not make it to old age.
