I live in Eastern Iowa, I started meat rabbits 18 months. My rabbits cost 11 cents a day per rabbit to feed. I process at 5 -5 1/2 pounds. That happens within 3 months. I feed grain only, they dont start eating grain until grain until about week 3.If I feed 75 days, I get 3 1/2 I pounds of meat for $8.25. My rabbits are on my back patio between the house and garage. its a 10 x 20 space and the rabbits don't take half of the space I have 6 does and 2 bucks and 2 grow out cages. Easy Peasy

I have a really hard time butchering my own animals. I've done some but spared others and kept them as pets, but didn't feel great about either decision :)
Perhaps you could do a video about how to mentally prepare for butchering day?
You seem to really care for your animals, but still butcher them without hesitation when the time comes.
Ideally I would like to be able to love/cuddle them while alive (and not view them only as food from the beginning) and still be able to send them to the freezer.

Great question! I will definitely put that on the list. It will never be easy, but I always come back to my why. I remember that I’m doing it because I will always eat meat and I believe that we shouldn’t suppress our natural instinct to do so. I feel like more people should learn to do these things on their own instead of all of us relying on someone else, which is why so many animals suffer. There are too many people to feed for just a few large companies to feed everyone. I think, if I look at the big picture, if we all went vegan... we would be much worse off. More plants need to grow, more animals will be eating them from lack of hunting/butchering, which means we have to grow more food for not only us, but more animals, which means larger plots of industrial agriculture, more pesticides, more poison in our food, and less food for everyone in general. Eating meat helps keep the balance. And that is my why. It needs to be done and I am more than capable of doing it. So, when it’s hard, always go back to your why. I hope this helps!

@@thehomesteadadventure9389 Looking forward to that video.
Do you have any pets on your homestead, any special birds or rabbits you intend to keep or is everything there to serve its purpose? (beside the cats of course)

@@ct852 well my turkey, Billy is a pet. And my step-son’s each have their own rabbit. I have a few cats and my 2 goats are more like pets than anything else.

It’s never easy to take a life, but I always come back to my why and remember why I’m doing it. I know I’ll always eat meat, I was designed to by nature. I think that by buying meat in the store, it’s just out of sight, out of mind. It was a living animal just like the ones I raise. By doing it myself, I add more food to the world and I hope they have a better life than the ones in the factory. So, while it isn’t easy and yes, I do get sad sometimes, I just remember why I do it and that’s what gets me through it.

When we butcher rabbits for the table, they are raised for one thing only-for the table. They are not pets, with the exception of the few that are actually pets and will not be butchered, so we do not become attached to them.
We know right off the bat that those chosen to become butchering prospects are to feed us only.
If you have any questions on this subject then you need to ask yourselves why are you raising rabbits at all if butchering the excess is a problem?
