- In this episode the Nerd takes a look at Desert Bus and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Redaction! Desert Bus was a mini game that was included on Penn & Teller's Smoke and Mirrors (and unreleased game planned for the Sega CD). It was developed by Imagineering and published by Absolute Entertainment. Absolute went out of business so the game was never released but the Nerd was able to obtain a copy to torture himself with! In Desert Bus, you drive a bus from Arizona to Las Vegas in real time. It's considered one of the worst games ever made, making it ripe for a review by the Nerd!
Then the Nerd takes a look at Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Redacted - a hack that improves upon the flaws in the original NES game.

In real life, there are other cars, the decor may change a bit from time to time, you can listen to the radio or an iPod, you can talk to passengers if there are any, etc.

Desert Bus for Hope still continues. In the 2019 run they raised $865,015.00. They marathon this game for roughly a week each year. Props to AVGN for calling them out in here.

Speed strats:
- Pressing left in the correct 2 frame window increases the bus's speed to 46 mph for 0.3 seconds.
- Double tapping the accelerator while pressing right in the correct 1 frame window will despawn the next rock on the side of the road which prevents lag. This is called "rock skipping"
- Watch out for the invisible kaizo block at mile #267

I wouldn't call this worse than Big Rigs personally. The difference is that Desert Bus was intended to be bad, an excuse we can't give to Big Rigs.

What makes Big Rigs superior to Desert Bus is the fact that it's just so enjoyably ridiculous. There are so many glitches that you can take advantage of to give you an hour or less of enjoyment.
Desert Bus is an existential nightmare that punishes you for trying to crack the system. Penn and Teller didn't create a game. They created a form of torture.
Think of it this way. Would you rather want to watch a long, dull movie that was intentionally dull to simulate real life in an office, or would you rather watch Tommy Wiseau's The Room, a movie that ended up being so shit that it turned out to be enjoyable to watch.

Considering that everything in this game happens in real time, that tow truck got out to the bus pretty quickly. When you're stuck in the desert you usually have to wait another few hours for help to arrive. Or maybe Nerd just cut that part out...

Yes, it's called stopping and take a break, which you could very much do since you're the _only one_ on the bus! And on a road this long, I guarantee there would be places to stop for exactly that purpose. In real life, the bus would not go that slow, you would have music to listen to. They did not simulate real life, they simulated pain nobody would actually go through irl.
Yep. They should've had one radio station that kicks in when u get reception, cuts out for about a half hour then completely changes to another station with reception as you move along. Honestly if gta did that it would be rewarding

To me one of the coolest things about the nerd is that I literally aged with him. I've been following him since 2004, and through a lot of rough moments in my life I knew I could just watch a nerd episode and that would just make me forget about everything. Idk why, but seeing the nerd being frustrated and giving games the finger is almost what you wish you could do to life itself. Watching his game collection and video quality grow, as well as his ambitions towards the whole thing (movie) is so great.
You're awesome James. Hopefully with the nerd movie you'll get the full attention you deserve and maybe have your own retro-gaming tv show!

Oh man, once me and a couple of friends took hour long shifts and beat this game. It took all night. Just so you know, the bus stop sign is only at the very beginning. Never appears again. Not once. And the bug that hits the window? Also happens once, about five hours in. It nearly caused us to crash it was so exciting/scary. What a game.

Oh, and Penn and Teller designed the game this way because they wanted it to be realistic? Well they made one mistake - surely a route from Arizona to Vegas would have at least _one_ petrol station, diner, public bathroom, side road and hitch-hiker along the way? It wouldn't just be 714km of nothing. Speaking of which, is it even possible to drive a bus for eight hours straight without needing to stop for petrol?

Links Fraulein you can't see it but there's a guy tied to the side of the bus that pours gas in when needed and the bus driver has a piss bag and a feeding tube
Diesel is a much more efficient fuel than gasoline.
Buses of that era generally did about 6 mpg and had a fuel tank of 120 gallons, the round trip in the game was 720 miles,,, everything works out.
I guess the only way to beat this game would be to pay several people to drive the bus for you at certain shifts. A day shift and a night shift. LOL

If the purpose of this game is to be an example why we need fantasy, imaginary magical things in games that are not just real life, it works!
I've enjoyed all the AVGN episodes so much over the years, that a selfish part of me wishes the Nerd were still in his angry 20s, shooting one passionate episode after another. I just haven't gotten that same vibe from 30+ year old James and recent episodes felt a bit staged & scripted to me. Perhaps it is indeed time to move on to something different. There's an amazing legacy of awesome content to enjoy, so THANK YOU James! I hope your movie does well.

I think it's more an issue with running out of games to review. There are a lot of bad games out there but most games are just mediocre and don't really warrant a 20 minute episode and all that entails

Personally I believe the AVGN movie should be the last episode. I mean as sad as it may be I think he deserves it. Like most people know he LOVES to make movies and after the AVGN movie he will have enough money to make another and I'm sure he has plans for horror movies or whatever, this is his passion and I think 120 episodes (including movie) is enough to satisfy anybody. This should be our gift to him for what he's done. I don't mind if he never makes another AVGN episode or at least like 5 after every movie would be nice but I think it's time to let him do what he wants to do. He can't take care of a child, make movies, and do a web series forever. Life is short and he should do what makes him happy and that's making movies. This is all my opinion but I hope after the movie people will be satisfied enough with AVGN to let it go and let him live his dream, it's not like he's going anywhere because I'll watch every movie he makes after this one.

I dunno. I don't see the AVGN job being that much more prohibiting towards his family life as any other job. These videos are crazy popular & that brings in good income as a partner. Besides, the AVGN stuff is also a house-bound job & with him playing alot of video games for footage, he could potentially use that as an excuse to spend time with his kid.
It is curious where James' career is heading towards, but no matter what he decides to do, I'll be there to support it as long as he has the passion for what he does.
idk, I think he should keep making more avgn.. i really enjoy avgn, I'll understand if he doesn't want to, of course.. but idk, that's just sad to think about, I hope this show goes on forever
