In this tutorial, I demonstrate a trick I learned from the photographer Calvin Hollywood. This is a technique that he uses to extract as much detail as possible from an image. He calls it, "Freaky Amazing Detail".

I tried this on Affinity Photo and it works great. There's only one difference - AP has no Surface Blur filter, but I found that it works with Gaussian Blur. I used a radius of 1px., and fine tuned with layer opacity on the Group layer.

@@bhovis I tried with Bilateral Blur and it also works like a charm. Affinity may be even slightly easier as all you have to do is apply a live filter to that inverted background copy layer, thus enabling tweaking later on.

Summary: enhances detail in areas of like color, but not edges, so no excessive halos. Does this by blurring the negative mask in areas but not edges. Success depends on the Surface Blur filter successfully recognizing the difference between an area and its edges.

Looks like a great trick! But I only have Photoshop CS 5.1. When I tried to reproduce these steps, after the "Vivid Light" blending change on the Layer 1 Copy, I got the heavily-saturated image--but then when I hit Ctrl-I (Invert), instead of that heavily-saturated image reverting back to looking much like the original (as was shown in the video), I got something that looks like a mask (a mostly gray field, with some greenish-yellow areas and a few streaks of other colors). Next (whether I do the "Convert to Smart Object" step or not), when I go to Filter/Blur/Surface Blur (using the same Radius and Threshold numbers as in the video) and hit OK, I see definite sharpening and detail increase of the "mask-like" image--but I don't see the finished, full-color, sharpened image like the video shows. Is there an additional step that I need to do (perhaps because I'm using this older CS 5.1 version of Photoshop)? (Trying "Flatten Image" didn't help...)
    Please help!
    Thanks!

This technique has a different effect than regular sharpening, and I think it’s very good. It will probably depend on the individual photo, and the result you’re after, but I would try both approaches and compare. Maybe you’ll end up with a blend of both. Like so much in photo editing, it’s a matter of experimentation.

@@malcolmsutton6740 ON1 is considered a Lightroom replacement but also has a lot of Photoshop’s features and is all most people need. Affinity Photo is a very good Photoshop-type program and a bargain (I think it’s still on sale), and has some features ON1 doesn’t, mainly for graphics arts applications.
