Heavens Halfpipe: Staying Motivated During the Dark Days of Winter

  • We always have a list of adventures and objectives that are both unmanageably huge and bite sized. A lot of my time is spent looking at maps, texting people, and watching the weather and when things line up heading out to check one of these goals of the list. This pocket sized adventure has been on that list for a loooooong time. Heavens halfpipe is a gentle slope that is visible from the valley and begs to be skied. Unfortunately, it takes the perfect combination of weather and snow coverage to make that possible. In this ep it all comes together.

    The cool factor is off the chart for this channel. It’s so hip it’s even got a relatively small amount of subscribers. One day, a news channel, other influencer, or the algorithm, will stoke this and they’ll go from 69K to 5 million subscribers overnight.

    Was up there the same day, but hit south summit and came down the gully to west and it probably took me 3hrs longer than you guys. Amazing day, amazing snow, amazing views, thanks for capturing it! (And for not risking triggering that last 300ft!)

    awesome vids guys, you should definitely invest in a trip out to New Hampshire and Vermont, especially the Presidential Range in NH. It's harder to find prime trail running conditions but it's well worth it when you do!

    • @MediocreAmateur
      @MediocreAmateur  5 лет назад +1

      I Just looked into the Presidential Range and found a traverse called the presidential traverse that sounded cool. When you say prime trail running conditions do you mean weather or the actually condition of the trails?

      @@MediocreAmateurNot sure if you have seen Andrew Drummond's channel but he also makes incredible content especially on the Whites. He is a backcountry skier and also does trail running. I think he owns a ski shop at a small ski area called Black Mt. which is located in the Whites. The section of the Presidential south of The Lakes of the Clouds hut is very well maintained. Also if you really want to beat yourself to the ground the AMC caretakers do this crazy challenge were they hike-run between every hut in the Whites in one shot. I think its over 50 miles and I truly can't imagen doing that, but I have met people who have and I have seen them doing it on my ridge crossings. Though the Whites are not as high as out west the trails can be brutal and I mean brutal as they have no switch backs and the weather can also be brutal. Mt Washington has the highest wind speed ever recorded and 90 plus is not uncommon, it rarely gets warm on the ridge. If you go enjoy its a great location. While your at it maybe take a trip over to Mt Katahdin which also is an awesome place. Take care and I love your channel.

    • @jerrymcsendy
      @jerrymcsendy 5 лет назад

      @@MediocreAmateur It can be either factor in the Whites, especially the Presidential Range because of its particularly high elevation for the area. Higher altitudes are very steep and rocky, and dramatic weather is not uncommon either. From an East Coast hiker, I say they're worth the time. Someday I'll make it back to the Wasatch for some summer excursions.
      Keep up the killer content!!

    I love your channel, running-climbing-skiing are all my favorite things and it is cool to see your videos on objectives that are quite challenging yet still possible for mere mortals. I’m heading out from CO to UT for an extended business trip and hoping to find some nice lines in the skill range you guys have posted. Any tips on where to find a fit mediocre ski partner out in UT that has respect for avalanche conditions but isn’t afraid of big vert?

    I live at the base, in Alpine near the entrance gate. I did this tour 3 times alone this year. Myself an ex-New Yorker, I can “talk” to everyone. If you see people up there, say hello...don’t be antisocial...the mountains belong to everyone...not just yourself.
