Primary changes in this version: Peter Sorin changed to Petra Sorin for gender balance, longer speeches condensed, workmen and minor servant characters eliminated, and dialogue generally lightened and made more colloquial. The goal was to make Chekhov accessible to a wider audience, but still retain the plot, characters, relationships, scene structure, themes, and re-invest in Chekhov's impulse for the show to be a comedy (well, tragicomedy?). The production's goal was to be 'faithful and fresh,' and the central theme: "the love of art and the art of love" (Medvedenko, scene 1).
