  • Fire Island National Seashore in New York is about 26 miles long and is one of four barrier islands protecting Long Island. On the western end is the Fire Island Lighthouse, near Robert Moses State Park, the tallest lighthouse on Long Island and the first thing a ship would see when coming across the Atlantic Ocean from Europe into the area. Take that Montauk Point! We're not only going to take you right up to the top of the lighthouse and give you a brief history, but we will also tour the area as well with a brief hike along the beautiful Fire Island National Seashore. We'll also show you the original lighthouse lens and the boathouse where you can see a lifesaving exhibit and a large whale skull. If you ever decide to go to this wonderful National Park Service unit, hopefully you will have enough clear skies and low haze to see the Manhattan skyline to the west. This is definitely one of the cooler lighthouses we have been to and we hope you enjoy this video. We have camped out on the seashore before and hope to make a video this summer of more of our excursions there.

    Happy Memorial Day everyone (for those who celebrate). In a weird stroke of timing, we visited Fire Island National Seashore on Memorial Day weekend in 2019. Hope you and enjoy and have a great long weekend.

    July 5, 2021 we visited Robert Moses Beach, Field 5. The boardwalk leading to the lighthouse was a nice trek. My fam and I bypassed the lighthouse and decided to climb it after sunbathing in this beautiful beach. After a few hours and a pretty nice sunburn we felt it was impossible to climb the lighthouse! This area is truly beautiful and as native New Yorkers, we will return next month, but only to the Fire Island Lighthouse, motivated by your video.👍

      Thank you so much. We have always said that if we get just one view on a video that inspires someone to check something out, it was worth the effort. It really is a beautiful area. We are trying to find the time to do a midweek camping overnight there, since the weekends are all booked! Definitely let us know what you think of the lighthouse!

    Can't go wrong with a lighthouse...we have quite a few of them here in the Maritimes...although most, if not all, of them are unmanned now. Many too are kept in good shape by the communities where they are located. Such great beacons of safety and security and good just to have a place to visit by the ocean!

      It’s amazing how lighthouses even now are still important, no matter how much technology we develop.

      There are 25 here I think. Some you can only go past in a boat, or see from afar, but done you can visit. This one and Montauk are the two most famous ones. And yes this beach is pristine!

    Happy Memorial Day! Its very interesting! The drive to the park seems like driving in key west Florida.. thanks for letting us know the history of the lighthouse.. the view from the top is amazing! Manhattan skyline from here on a clear day..? That would be great! The boathouse seems interesting too! Thanks fir the great video! 😊👍

      It’s definitely like Key West. The beaches on the south shore are mostly beautiful and yes, I’ve never seen the full skyline because even when it seems clear, there’s still haze in the distance.

    This is so lovely you guys!! We actually love lighthouses because they are so beautiful and help steer ships to let them know where the coast is! So cool the view from above and didn't know that there was an original one and then a second one is rebuilt! Thanks for showing us around! We really enjoyed the tour! Wedee's auntie actually lives in long island so maybe we can check this out one day! The steps look pretty steep so be careful! The beach is just so stunning!

    • @MagellanandGreyhound
      @MagellanandGreyhound  Год назад +2

      Yes, the lighthouse and beach wont take you all day, but you can camp overnight in certain sections (which is fun) and there are little towns you can take the ferry over to visit too (although they don't allow bikes I think). As far as other stuff nearby, if you go west from the lighthouse and across bridge etc, you can take the Ocean Parkway/Jones Beach bike path. Its like 20 miles, really beautiful. May go and do a video on it one day. After that, continuing west, there's Long Beach, which is a really cool beach town, with a boardwalk, eateries, etc. Crazy in summer.
