Ocean Beach is the metropolis of Fire Island. Incorporated in 1921, the village has nearly 600 homes and a bustling town center. The island is at its widest here and lushly foliated.
Bayfront restaurants, shops, boutiques, art galleries, food markets, pizzarias, cafes, bakeries, and a movie theater line the main street, Bay Walk.
There are several guesthouses, many realtors, and more services than anywhere else on the island.
The nightlife here is legendary, with bars and dancing plentiful and lively. Many day-trippers come to play on the beach by day and party into the night.
Ocean Beach is a village in the southern part of the town of Islip, on Fire Island, within Suffolk County, New York, United States.
The village is a popular tourist destination, due to its beachfront location accompanied by a commercial district featuring nightlife, hotels, bayfront restaurants and a variety of stores. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 79.
Fire Island runs from Democrat Point / Fire Island Inlet in the west to Moriches Inlet / Cupsoque Beach in the east.

1863 Fire Island separates from Jones Beach
There was a time when Fire Island was connected to Jones Beach Island, a single island stretching 60 miles from Jones Beach to South Hampton. The Fire Island Inlet naturally formed in 1863, and was later expanded through manpower, once over 9 miles wide before shrinking to its current width.

1931 Fire Island separates from Southampton
A 1931 Nor’easter caused the formation of the Moriches inlet and resulting in the separation of Southampton and Fire Island. Local efforts have protected eastern Fire Island with a series of jetties that have interrupted the longshore drift of sand from east to west which is blamed for the beach erosion.

Hurricane Sandy
Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter, with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km).
Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore" Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.
