- Could not have enjoyed this performance more. I went back and listened a few more times and did hear some hoarseness on "finally" when shes belting? She physically pulls back from mic and there's just a twinge of hoarse throat. Sounds to me like dehydration/oversinging (life of a broadway star lol), but not necessarily hoarseness caused by repetitive vocal dysfunction.
aNywAY- I loved it. Thank you so much to everyone who recommended Shoshana to me (Stewie gets a special callout for their eternal patience regarding this reaction/analysis).
PS- I had some absolutely wild editing issues with this- I HAD TO CODE. CODE! And do so many weird background spec stuff I have never had to do! So please love it and watch all the ads lmao (shameless begging). If anyone follows me on twitter, you saw my Final Cut Pro X meltdown through a frantic twitter thread. You live and you learn.

Quick question, I've noticed here and in her other videos as well that this is a thing she does, she sometimes articulates rounded vowels and diphthongs out of the side of her mouth - in this performance I see it even when she says 'makes you believe it's *all* true' (2:13 in the original vid, 9:05 in your reaction), which is a fairly open vowel; and then a few seconds later on the 'and now I got *you*' ---- Can this be an intentional trick for articulation or is it just a quirk of hers? I know that in a cover of Stone Cold that she did with Postmodern Jukebox people in the comments were all laughing about this because at one point she says 'stone' in such a way that it really looks like the diphtong dislocated her jaw or something lol
Also the rasp or hoarseness you hear is not just in this song, I think I've heard it in pretty much every performance. Such a shame if that's vocal damage. She's owning it, though!

If you do any more reactions please make one of them the sopranist Radu Marian. His vocal chord development was disrupted by severe laryngitis in puberty and his unique timbre sounds to me just the way people of the 18th century described the operatic castrati timbre: they said it was uniquely smooth, light yet firm, pure as a bell, sweet as a flute, supernatural-sounding etc, and he has the supreme agility and dynamic range/control at high soprano notes that was described too. His bones and rib cage (and therefore lung capacity) are normal or small for a man, unlike their huge non-fusing bones, so he probably doesn't sound EXACTLY like they did and he doesn't have their extreme stamina (no minute-long extreme coloratura phrases without pausing for a breath, as Farinelli did) but it must be quite close. Absolutely gorgeous, I have found it psychologically healing as I try to hold on through these multiple autoimmune diseases (psoriatic uveitis, psoriatic arthritis among others) that covid-19 triggered and will probably be recurrent lifelong now. Very few things can make me feel tranquil these days but this man's transcendentally beautiful repertoire lets me forget everything.

Great voice. A hint of vocal fry? Definitely. There are two young artists that you have to hear. First watch Amira Willighagen's cover of "O Mio Babbino Caro" on Holland's Got Talent, which she won in 2014 at the age of 9, be sure it's the for English speakers version, unless you speak Hollandic. And make sure you include what the judges say before and after she sings it's important for context. Then compare her singing it again two years later. Also check out Darci Lynne on America's Got Talent Champions finals, she also sings "O Mio Babbino Caro". It will change your mind about how to sing opera.
