I began enjoying sixto 42 years ago. Have a few original vinyls. Could listen and watch him all day. Such a talent in every way and a beautiful soul. Intelligent and humble. I would have loved to have a chat with him. RIP Sir. Love you forever. 💜💜💜
So the rest of the world finally caught up. I have a few of his albums. I bought the first one in 1977. I saw him in concert in the Hunter Valley (Australia) a few years ago with two of my sons. They love him too.
Never heard of him until I saw the Documentary last week. What an eye opener. Incredible story and man. So humble. What a version this is. Unbeatable. Heartwarming.
mind blowing. CRAZY. MESMERIZING. LIFE Changing. made me question my reality Just tricking. wild. I love how they did it. how they told u he was dead from the start. it just……i’m wordless it’s magical and fulfilling and beautiful and lovely. and sad and happy and just plain crazy. I loved it.
He’s like an Angel. He was a star and no one knew it except for him and a small few acquaintances (maybe). and a million or two people from South Africa. mind blowing. IMPOSSIBLE STORY. but crazy and true. all at the same time. wow wow wow. wild!!!
Sometimes reality surpasses fantasy! The incredible story of Sixto Rodriguez proves that for one more time! Not only a great artist, but also a wonderful person! RIP Sixto Rodriguez!
What a man. No anger at the lost years. My favorite quote "There is no shame in hard work, or in poverty". Going to his concert in SF this Thursday. I can't wait.
I am sitting here in utter disbelief. I simply can't comprehend how this can happen. Rodriguez has always been a staple in music collections with the likes of Rolling Stones, Dylan, Van Morrison, Doors, Eagles. Name a classic and Rodriguez has always nestled within such greats if not eclipse many same such greats. I am both exhilarated that he finally can understand the power and strength he has given to the world and in our individual lives, and sad that he was unaware for so long. Such words!
This guy Rodriguez was absolutely massive in Pentridge prison in Melbourne in the early 70's. Still love him now... This is a great version of probably my absolute favourite song of all time
Proudly South African ...we grew up with this amazing man and his music! He just had a ton of sold out concerts down here in South Africa! The man ROCKS!!!!!
The documentary was great but his albums are even better ! When I decided to watch the film I didn't expect to discover an artist whose records I would go buy - but I sure did. He's damn good
I'd like to second that. Thanks South Africa for keeping this guy alive so that I could hear his story, and even more importantly, that I could get to know his music. I've been more exited about his two albums, Cold Fact and Coming From Reality, than any other albums I have heard, ever. Amazing and legendary music.
I still remember the day I first saw the LP cover of COLD FACT in 1973 - then I heard it - I've heard it 100,000 times and it will never grow old - love you brother ...
You can't help but have the utmost respect for this man. He has known about his fame for a number of years now, He is selling out large venues every where he goes and he is still as humble as they come, he give's away most of his earnings and he's happy. God Bless You Rodriguez
I too have just finished watching "Searching for Sugar Man". The premise of the movie is mind boggling. Rodriguez is the most humble of men. I've never heard of him, yet he took the people of South Africa through tumultuous times of apartheid, censorship, and military state actions. We have a great man, living in our own city of Detroit, yet he is not acknowledged here. I love his voice, and admire his humbleness.
John Donohoe Another artist lesser known in the USA, but who made it big in SA is Shawn Phillips. I believe he is from Texas. Look for his album Second Contribution. If you don't know him, do yourself a favour and give it a listen.
Listening to his music as a 14 year old in 1977 and lucky to see him in Brisbane Festival Hall a few years later and still have those original records and never stopped listening to his music I just thought he didn't tour anymore but he has more brilliant music today than the two albums from yesteryear his music never died.
First class. Plus. Love, like, all of Rodriguez songs. Plus. Reality. Plus. Sometimes depressing. Sometimes exhilertaing. Demanding of the senses to the music and lyrics and the essence between all that good stuff.
It is far too often in this world that art is rewarded before the artist himself has lived long enough to respect the gift of acclimation... Sixto Rodriguez is the greatest example of an artist who sees not what he has given, but what it has returned... So few ever get to see the world as they have changed it through the eyes of age, and Rodriguez has earned every cheer, every smile and every tear shed of his contribution to this world... For that, we can all be grateful...
The very name 'Sixto' puts me in mind of the fact that the sixties & early seventies (not unlike this era in some respects) was a very tumultuous time (I know, I was there, although a lot of it, in retrospect, seems kinda blurry ;)...Think of all the so-called stars, talented artists, from that period, who died at age 27...The Chinese have a saying, 'may you be cursed to live in interesting times'... which puts me in mind of Dylan's 'The Times They Are A Chang'in'...You ride that dragon , that was the Woodstock & Vietnam era, add youth & celebrity status, & it's a killer... Or as Robbie Robertson put it, 'a goddam impossible way of life'... when life becomes impossible, you die, simple as that... Rodriguez didn't die, but he sure paid his dues, & you're right, he earned his celebrity status... He worked in the mean streets of Detroit, a living breathing metaphor for the rampant decay that is urban America, renovating old buildings, breathing in Asbestos dust...year after year, decade after decade... How did he survive that with vocal chords still intact?... 'I WONDER...' P.S.: His daughter is beautiful & very insightful, like her dad...PEACE OUT
If it wasn't for the South Africans & the Aussie's support of Rodrigez music in the 70s & onwards, America would never have known about this "Treasure" of a muso ! Durban South Africa Loves you Man ! As you know. I met & spoke at length to Sexto when he played in Durban in the early 90's & he couldn't hear enough about "our stories" of the love of his music in he early 70s & what anthems they were for us ! "Long Live" man !
I agree but in saying more, it is refreshing to encounter a musician with such humility and joyous presence. In a business which is forever driven by ego, narcissism and selfish ambitions to listen, to experience Rodriguez is like encountering an enlightened being. Beautiful.. thank you for such wonderful musicianship and for a wonder life to share with us all who listen and watch.
Wooooowwww!. This might be the best version of Like a Rolling Stone ever recorded. The keyboardist and the backing guitar deserve double deserts tonight. I saw the documentary last night; was waiting to see it years ago. Absolutely incredible story, that a guy that sold a couple dozen albums in the US sold half a million or more album in RSA. Then believed to be dead for well over 25 years. Then found when his daughter saw something on the Internet. Then gets hooked up with his most loyal fans. Then performs for a week in RSA. Goes back to his shack in Detroit. And then gets revived 15 years later. Yeah, right. And he can still perform. Nice story.
I saw him in Adelaide Australia in 1980. He did a small sell-out tour because he had a big following here too. I was lucky enough to have a front row centre seat to see him again in Brisbane in 2016
Yeah me too, about two weeks ago - the song’s been ringing in me ever since. I saw the vid on.. like Daily Comet, I think it was called. -Awful hosts badgered him into playing a live ‘Sugarman’ and…. He. Just. Makes. A. Diamond.
I love music and this is to all music people ! don't stop sharing your talent. My best friend ,The human beinz made the song Nobody but me. Like Rodriguez good music must go on and to be remembered. Musician Rock.
I first saw the doco about 12 months ago and was absolutely gobsmacked,To think this guy's talents were hidden from us ,and i am the first of the" baby boomers: (Australia), .yes ,that makes me 70,and have heard them all. What strikes us is the absolute humility and " earthiness" ot his man. What a story ,and what a LEGEND.
Hey, I feel the same way here in America - I think maybe were both born needing to hear this song.. but until we did, we didn’t even know.. But now we do - and how does it feel? -Like a breath of better air, that’s how it feels
i've been listening to this man ever since i was knee high to a grasshopper, im still loving his music & chillin' to it now, im 55.. & ima gonna die old disgracefully..the mans a bloody legend & his music soothes my soul.
I saw Bob Dylan with Joan Baez in concert in 1965 at the Seattle Center Arena. Went to see Joan Baez. Never heard Bob Dylan. After hearing Dylan went out and bought all his records and shortly thereafter Dylan released "Bringing It All Back Home" which included many of the songs he sang. Never been the same since. But, Rodriquez is a better poet, truly sincere and humble. Dylan became a money-seeking hypocrite. What a difference! Rodriquez is the real thing and still can sing, even after 70.
I am a great, great fan of Dylan. No confusion about it. I do admit being a fan of Dylan takes a little bit of toll on my conscience. On the other hand though, Sixto Rodriguez can be loved for who he is. I have immense respect for Dylan's work but I would rate Rodriguez higher than Dylan because of the person Rodriguez is. You know what, work of Rodriguez is by no measure littler than Dylan's in terms of depth. It is sheer volume and longevity of Dylan's career that gives him a prominent place in the league of songwriters and influential personalities. But I am always shy of professing openly as a Dylan crazy because he is cynical to a sickening degree, unreal, insincere, and quite arrogant too. No offense meant here.
Hi Douglas, Great that you saw Dylan in 1965 must have been great. I got to see him in 1984 in Slane Castle. I was disappointed but that was because I didn’t understand why he was acting the way he was.. Recently I saw the film “Rolling Thunder” and it shed a lot of light on his behavior and the hard road he traveled to move on his career from he wanted him to do and to what we were expecting from him. He’s not as you described him in my opinion. You are a bit harsh maybe... “No direction home” is another film that may help you understand my view. Another film that gives perspective and understanding is “I’m not there”. Enjoy if you can find the time. Regarding Sexto, what a sad but heart warming story of an artist who should have been allowed us to share so much more....
Love this guy ! He's an example of what music appreciators (no, not bootleggers) can do to bring a talented musician to the public & ultimately afford him the gratitude & accolades he & his music & their journey deserves. We passed around cassettes taken from an album & shared his music with our friends until many knew him. He became a light to us lities (South African slang for younger people), during our own battle against the repulsive regime we were shackled to & suppost to serve by giving our life & souls to it's military & it's policies. Amongst other artists Rodriguez' music became one of our torches against the regime. The album Cold Fact our voice in the pending darkness & now our anthem at having been delivered to the light within us & what unity can do. Unfortunately our present government seems heel bent on ling their pockets at the expense of the people. Another battle to overcome the New Oppressors will have to begin. What's that about, "Better the devil you know".....
I used to listen to Rodriguez back in the 70s. My cousin had the albums and I thought he was pretty cool then. In a way the time capsule he hid away in all those years protected him and his art, bringing him into a new age with his values and integrity intact. Now we can all see that he is a truly remarkable artist and human being. His modesty, sincerity and profundity are in such stark contrast to today's bombastic overblown egomaniacs with their vile turgid muzak.
+geoff2204 Beautifully said. I listened to him in the 70's, as well. Saw him a couple times. Glad the movie has helped to expose he and his music to a new audience.
Bless you Mr. Rodriguez! Love your music, love your lyrics, love your voice! You're an incredible human being =) Awesome cover! I love Bob Dylan! Another amazing lyricist! Crucify Your Mind is my FAVORITE! Thank you for sharing your gift!!! You have helped a great deal of people through very difficult times! Bless your heart sir! ♥♥♥
It's a great documentary . Shows you how cut throat and corrupt the music industry can be. Sixto's music is great but if you take the time to watch "Searching For Sugar Man" it becomes even greater. Blues On....
Let me mention my own sequence of doing things. I read somewhere that a documentary about a potential hidden gem signer is made. Instead of finding out the documentary and using it as a step to discover the man and his music, I listened to Sixto Rodriguez Cold Fact album on RUclips. This is about 5 years ago. It was so easy to fall in love with Rodriguez's music permanently. I have watched the documentary in May 2019 (yesterday actually). I am happy about not wasting a minute in starting listening to his music.
Rodriguez is an artist......he cares little for the money and fame, still lives in the same house in Detroit that he has lived in for 40 years. And raised beautiful daughters who are devoted to him. A hard working man who did what he had to do for his family, which included giving up music for a long time and doing manual labor.
Para quem amou o Sugar Man, temos certeza de que será uma curiosa descoberta. but if you had known about him 20-30 years ago there had been no history to be told about him. but i don´t understan why he didn´t became famous 20-30 years ago because he is a one of the best musician I´ve ever heard I love his music! greetings from Sweden Gothenburg
i still remember the night when i watched the documentry. I watched it 3times on the same night and i couldn't stop thinking about him for weeks. I'll always be his loyal fan. He was a precious gem. RIP
I fell in love with 'establishment blues' in 1979. I wanna see the man now. By the way, I have seen Dylan twice (Dylan, obviously a God) Well Rodriguez owns this song now. SpringBoks- loathe you on the field, but thank you my brothers for rebirthing Rodriguez. Aussie
Great! Natural born rockstar. I'm so happy, that he could enjoy his music, his fame and stardom in the end. Thank you, Malik Bendjelloul, for your film, thank you, Sixto, for your music! And both are gone now... 😢
Sixto never sold his soul the industry. God bless him, and the kids in SouthAfrica that had the heart to see who he was.
I began enjoying sixto 42 years ago. Have a few original vinyls. Could listen and watch him all day. Such a talent in every way and a beautiful soul. Intelligent and humble. I would have loved to have a chat with him. RIP Sir. Love you forever. 💜💜💜
i was lucky enough to see him play in 2021 live.
thanks to his music, he will live forever! Sending ❤️ from Detroit
RIP Sexto. One of THE Most underrated musicians EVER . You never got the recognition you deserved .
❤❤❤❤
Thank You South Africa for keeping The Sugar Man Alive
Iam so proud and honored of to know of SIXTO!! THE GREAT CHICANO version of like Bob Dylan !!!!
Rest in peace Sixto..You were great 👍
So the rest of the world finally caught up.
I'd heard of him a little before that - mojo magazine had reviewed his two albums - I was shocked when I first heard about the movie

Every talented forever unknown recording artist singer/songwriter of the 60's can only dream the Sixto Rodriguez story. It brought a tear to my eye.
He is the real fucking deal... I love him, his outlook on life and his music... that face does not lie.
Aside from his music, he's got to be one of the coolest dudes around!
The chemistry among these dudes is freaking impressive. Makes for great sound, I could listen to this for hours....thanks for posting.

What do you mean never heard Bob Dylan , then went and out and bought all his albums , what am I missing?.
Hi Douglas,

Saw him live in Festival Hall Brisbane Queensland Australia '77 I think it was a night 🌙 to remember, he was definitely special 😄
Can't stop smiling. Sixtos story is one with a happy ending.
How often do we get one....
+geoff2204 So perfectly and beautifully stated! Thank you!
+geoff2204 He stayed a pure spirit.
+geoff2204 Beautifully said. I listened to him in the 70's, as well. Saw him a couple times. Glad the movie has helped to expose he and his music to a new audience.
+geoff2204 wow... well said
+geoff2204 BULL SHIT
Farewell Sixto - what a journey you walked - from being a complete unknown to as big as the Rolling Stones. Thank you for the music!
Bless you Mr. Rodriguez! Love your music, love your lyrics, love your voice! You're an incredible human being =) Awesome cover! I love Bob Dylan! Another amazing lyricist! Love this man❤️❤️❤️❤️
This guy just got a new huge fan ! Just can't stop smiling, this is so fuckin' good !!
this humble man is an awesome giant
It's a great documentary . Shows you how cut throat and corrupt the music industry can be. Sixto's music is great but if you take the time to watch "Searching For Sugar Man" it becomes even greater. Blues On....
,,, yep, you're right ,,,,, and I have seen this documentary ,,,,, what a story !
ok sounds good man I was going out +Woody Jagla
Let me mention my own sequence of doing things. I read somewhere that a documentary about a potential hidden gem signer is made. Instead of finding out the documentary and using it as a step to discover the man and his music, I listened to Sixto Rodriguez Cold Fact album on RUclips. This is about 5 years ago. It was so easy to fall in love with Rodriguez's music permanently. I have watched the documentary in May 2019 (yesterday actually). I am happy about not wasting a minute in starting listening to his music.
I got chills...he’s just awesome.
I love his shit. Even his covers.
yeah.
Rodriguez is an artist......he cares little for the money and fame, still lives in the same house in Detroit that he has lived in for 40 years. And raised beautiful daughters who are devoted to him. A hard working man who did what he had to do for his family, which included giving up music for a long time and doing manual labor.
one of the greatest poets ever , of the social realism sphere!!
Fly free beautiful soul. With love forever from South Africa. ❤
SUGARMAN TUPINIQUIM

I fell in love with 'establishment blues' in 1979. I wanna see the man now.
By the way, I have seen Dylan twice (Dylan, obviously a God) Well Rodriguez owns this song now. SpringBoks- loathe you on the field, but thank you my brothers for rebirthing Rodriguez. Aussie
God I LOVE this man!!!
Great! Natural born rockstar. I'm so happy, that he could enjoy his music, his fame and stardom in the end. Thank you, Malik Bendjelloul, for your film, thank you, Sixto, for your music! And both are gone now... 😢
What a humble and unassuming soul ♥️🌸♥️
Hope all the young music fans can appreciate the 60's and 70's thanks to this genius of a musician!
salute...the van gogh of music........
couldn't have said it better!
A very humble man !
Best version of this great anthem I've ever heard.
Chris rodriguez. . .él ya murió
Thanks South Africa!! From Mexico
FANTASTIC!!!! What a legend!
